Current advancements in technology have brought about innovations that have made communication with people oversees to be just by a click of a button. This is done through various social media such as Facebook, MySpace, Instagram, Twitter, Yahoo and Google+ that allow interaction. People can take photos and videos of their day to day life experiences and share them with the rest of the world by uploading them onto these social websites. As such, the world has been converted into a global village where most information is just a click of a button away (Sturm, 2012). Social networking is an issue that has sparked debates all over the world. The introduction of social media has indeed changed the world in many aspects. Today, a significant portion of literate people in the society has at least engaged in social networking (Sturm, 2012). This engagement and interaction on social media has affected people in one way or the other. It is this effect of social networking on people who indulge in it that has since been a bone of contention dating back to the 1980s when internet first came into being. The impacts of social media on individual people have been substantial. In some instances, these impacts have been so significant that they change the lifestyles of some users (Lenhart, Purcell, Smith & Zickur, 2010). People are seen to change their perception of some aspects of life after indulging so much in social networking. Since these changes can be either positive or negative, the good and bad of social networking remains an issue that will forever stir debates across the world. One of the main reasons why social media has positively affected our society is because of how it has made communicating with people much easier. “Today, four out of five active internet users maintain at least one social media profile” (Moe, 3). Using these websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and etc., people talk about everything with anyone from what they are planning to do, to what they are eating and much more (Moe, 24). We can also send private messages to other users of these websites about personal matters that you just want to discuss with them.
In conclusion, although social media sites may be able to have a positive outlook globally by allowing friends and family to stay connect while countries apart, we also have to consider the negative effects that social media has on us locally. We have all lost a sense of communication of face-to-face talking since social media has been introduced into our society. We no longer communicate and are losing our social skills the more we partake in the social media sites. It is time for us to think about the global and local effects of social media and where they are taking our society in today’s world. For all we know, social media could be leading us down a path of serious destruction. We live in a world with technological advances that are rapidly changing right in front of our very eyes.
