“Amanda Todd was a 15 year old girl when she committed suicide because she was blackmailed, bullied, and physically assaulted on social media” (NoBullying). Suicide is a very serious issue that happens to appear frequently. Kids figure that they have no one to go to and get help, so they choose this path instead. “Suicide is responsible for nearly 4,500 deaths of kids every year” (CyberBullyHotline). It is also ranked 3rd for what causes the most deaths in the U.S. About 20% of teens will have the thought of suicide but 1 in 10 usually attempt it” (CyberBullyHotline). As mentioned a little before about kids not having anyone to turn to, it is just a product of thinking. The kids get put down so much that they feel like there is just no possible way for them to be helped. But that isn’t necessarily true because they never get around to asking for help because in their mind it isn’t an option. And this all happens because people decide that it is okay to make someone else’s life miserable. Social media has an influence that can cause bad mental health.
The United States has much history of mental health issues. In the earlier years, hospitals dealt with many people that had these issues. It was said to be for “ways in which trends in psychiatry and

Mental illness has been around as long as people have been. However, the movement really started in the 19th century during industrialization. The Western countries saw an immense increase in the number and size of insane asylums, during what was known as “the great confinement” or the “asylum era” (Torrey, Stieber, Ezekiel, Wolfe, Sharfstein, Noble, Flynn Criminalizing the Seriously Mentally Ill). Laws were starting to be made to pressure authorities to face the people who were deemed insane by family members and hospital administrators. Because of the overpopulation in the institutions, treatment became more impersonal and had a complex mix of mental and social-economic problems. During this time the term “psychiatry” was identified as the medical specialty for the people who had the job as asylum superintendents. These superintendents assumed managerial roles in asylums for people who were considered “alienated” from society; people with less serious conditions wer...

Studies also found that 6.4% had intentionally cut bruised or harmed themselves and that 8.1% had though about suicide and 1.3% had actually attempted suicide. This evidence shows that social media is bad for teens and preteens. If social media got banned then there would not be any sort of problem like this.
Many children are ridiculed and bullied via social media pages such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. They are publically shamed for various reasons some being considered not popular, promiscuous, or homosexual. They receive messages and are included in posts or tweets that target them for who they are. Others who see these posts can take part in commenting and ganging up on the individual. On ABC News most recently, teen girls have targeted others by posting “silly photos of themselves then altered to include blunt advice to each other, about things like how to dress more appropriately.” Today the person being targeted eventually commits suicide because the humiliation becomes unbearable. To shame a person to death is unacceptable, it is their right to be who they are without being judged. Society and the people within need to worry about their own
There are so many types of mental illnesses that affect people every day. When some people think of mental illnesses they think of the ones that would cause people to have physical symptoms as well, but that’s untrue, there are many more that you would never know anyone has if you were to see them on the street. As defined by the 2008 encyclopedia “a mental illness is any disease of the mind or brain that seriously affects a person’s ability or behavior. Symptoms of a mental illness may include extreme moods, such as excessive sadness or anxiety, or a decreased ability to think clearly or remember well.” A mentally ill person has severe symptoms that damage the person’s ability to function in everyday activities and situations. Every nation and every economic level can be affected by a mental illness. In the United States alone about 3% of the population has severe mental illness and to add to that number about 40% of people will experience a type of mental illness at least once in their lives. Some cases of mental illnesses can go away on their own, but some cases are so severe that they require professional treatment. There is so much more available to help people recover from their symptoms than in the past.
In the nineteenth century the United States had established hospitals to house and care for the chronically ill and mentally ill. Several individual states assumed responsibility for mental hospitals in the 1980’s. At the beginning of the twentieth-century mental health treatments proved to have limited efficacy. Many of these patients received custodial care in state hospitals. New psychiatric medications were developed and introduced into state mental hospitals in 1955 as a result of the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH).The medicines that were developed brought new hope and addressed some of the symptoms of mental disorder. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy enacted the Community Mental Health Centers Act. This accelerated deinstitutionalization.
In David Gribble's Eastern Reporter opinion article, "For our children's sake we need to act on the curse of social media" (February 6th, 2018), he addresses the complications which are associated with social media for children. Public Health has many different sections of information regarding the community and individuals; the first two sections that I have examined are the Principles of Population Health and the Tools of Population Health. Within the two sections I was able to gather an understanding of both, but after reading I was left with a question. In regards to public health, can excessive use of social media contribute to addictive behaviors or mental health issues? As I look back on my notes I realized that there are many possibilities that can link what I have read and what I have experienced in my life together to this problem.
The purpose of this project is to research how social media impacts our eating habits, health and wellbeing. I will be looking at groups of people from the ages of 16-20. This area of study that I will be researching and can be used with my A level subjects, Sociology, English and Health and Social care studies. The motive behind this research is to look into how media influences our eating habits, health and wellbeing. Due to the rise of 'lifestyle' bloggers, I want to know to what extent we trust them and live our lives by following them, and how this effects us. I have addressed this issue by carrying out quantitative data through questionnaires and, in addition, two semi-structured interviews to gain my findings.
In the article “Could lots of time spent on Social be tied to depression? “, author Alan Mozes have talked about a recent research which was done to find relationship between social media and depression. The study had 1,800 men and women ages range between 19 to 32 years old participated. The main question for this finding was, is greater involvement of social media linked to depression or is it depressed people who are drag to social media? Dr. Brian Patrick have suggested three types of results which are expected from the study one of the strongest possibilities is that people who have depressive symptoms tend to use social media more often because they don’t feel the energy to engage with new people. The second possibility is that increased usage in social media use can lead into depressive thoughts. The last possibility is in which depressed people turned towards social media to make the depression worsen. This is a study based on association between social media and depression not cause and effect. Researcher’s had created a questioner that asked the participants the amount of time spent on popular social media such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest ,Vine and Linkedln. From this research it was found that on average participant checked in social media 20 times each week for over an hour a day, and 1/4th participants were appeared at high risk for depression. Along with this researchers have found that those people who are on social media the most are 2.7 times more likely to be depressed compared to people who are on social media least. In the conclusion of the findings Dr. Patrick have said that these finding do not suggest that every person who engage more time on s...

Mental illness is apart of every person's life whether it is themselves, a family member, or a coworker. Although mental illness has become more talked about in society it still carries a dark stigma that creates fear and breeds aggression in the general population towards the mentally ill. Lack of understanding and the constant focus from mass/ social media continue to hinder society from gaining a true understanding of what mental illness is and how it affects each person differently. The daily portrayal of those with some form of mental illness in the media only fuels the fear of the mentally ill. Insinuating that having a mental health issue makes you likely to hurt others(school/mass shooters) or harm yourself(teen/celebrity suicide) is
In 2010 a freshman named phoebe prince committed suicide. The events leading up to her death included a lot of bullying over the internet- facebook to be specific. She was taunted for months by fellow classmates, encouraging her to kill herself. One day Prince decided that she had reached a low point and hung herself. After her death a classmate commented on the post “accomplished”. The police dug a little deeper and found the bullying campaign against Phoebe Prince. At least 6 parties were involved, before their arrest and after her death, they continued to taunt Prince. Social media is a very dangerous virtual world that aides in crimes such as cyberbullying; identity theft; rapist; molesters; and even murderers. The world is a dangerous

With all the new networking site it makes it easier for bullies to target their victims. Kids don’t understand when they reach a certain limit it can trigger the young kids mind to commit suicide. Bullying and suicide have a huge connection between the two. Getting bullied at school is one thing getting bullied on social media is another, there are more people that can see if they post public. Getting made fun of on social media can make the other kid sensitive and can get to them to the point where they cannot take it anymore. If kids have easy access to get online it is easy for them to find their victim, now a day kids know how to work the new websites. Among average 61% have received mean or embarrassing posts online and 59% have received mean texts, e-mails or instant messages (Anderson, Bresnahan, & Musatics, 2014). It is easier to bully on social media then is at school or anywhere else. Embarrassing pictures or even inappropriate pictures of the victim can be uploaded by the bully leading to embarrassment for everyone to see. It is much easier to be behind a screen not being face to face to attack with harsh word, or whatever it is to embarrass the kid. Being behind a screen doesn’t like kids socialize, which is what is wrong with the society
