About 40 percent of teen in the United States have seen drugs and alcohol because of social media. Social media has advertise alcohol and drugs by people posting videos, pictures or restaurants advertising their happy hour or special drinks. Also social media is unique in the way alcohol brands can target consumers and also create relationships with teens. The media is often guilty of portraying substance abuse positively in many cases with a lack of representation of the downside of drugs. Social media is such an integral part of teens lives. Even though social media can be a place inundated with alcohol and drug use. It can also be a lead to recovery for teens. There are many ads whom advertise recovery for example Tarzana Treatment Centers has been successful in promoting recovery on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. “One message can be seen by thousands of individuals when only a few of our Friends and Followers click on a link.” There services are for new clients to have informed to contacted them after seeing their social media post. Another interesting phenomenon is social media and recovery. “When I got sober I was able to find a plethora of information online about getting sober and living in recovery. I frequented sober blogger sites, followed sobriety accounts on Twitter, and “liked” recovery pages on Facebook.” By using these advertisements we should continue to use social media as a powerful tool to combat the stigma of addiction and promote prevention teens using any harmful substance without being educated. As we become more and more reliant on social media, it impacts our views and what the media portrays in the drug world. Social media is seen as a way for people to communicate with friends, overseas or update what is occurring in one’s life. Social media makes social interaction faster, more convenient and easier, with a simple click of a button or a touch on a screen. With such a drastic growth in the social media world, companies have found it easier to advertise to their consumers by using ads on social media websites to promote their products. Likewise, the drug world has not fallen behind, similar to companies they have also used social media to exploit the usage and trafficking of drugs (Cawley). While this is a negative affect within drugs in social media, it has also helped capture drug lords. Social media has impacted the global issue on drugs, and has made the drug world “popular”.
Simon Mainwaring, social media specialist, is quoted to saying, “Social media demands a lot of us on top of our already demanding lives.” In this day in age, media has boomed more rapidly than it ever has. Images are constantly flashing on our screens; we are being fed information concerning media on a regular basis. Due to the media it is effecting teens physically, mentally, and emotionally. Media is damaging the teens in this day of age.
It was found that social media sites such as Facebook may encourage young people to participate in risk taking behaviour as it allows them to discuss risky topics and share experiences with their peers away from judgement (Lenhart, 2009; Winpenny, Marteu and Nolte, 2014). It was found that social media presents risky behaviours of their own. As well as giving young people a platform to discuss risky behaviour, it also presents issues such as young people sending sexual images to each other through social media. This point answers the aim of the chapter, which was asking whether social media and other media influences young people into participating in risk taking behaviour, as it is evident that it does in some cases. As well as this, it was found that media such as television programmes can influence young people. This is because in some cases, they show risky behaviours such as binge drinking to be positive. This also explores the question whether media that is not online can influence young people. Evidence has suggested that it can (Al-Sayed and Gunter, 2012), as young people may think that risky behaviour is ok because they saw it on television. Other factors that have been found to influence young people’s behaviour are environmental factors. It was found that young people who have been abused are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol. This may be because they want to numb their emotions attached to their experiences. This chapter explored the different influences that may impact young people into participating in risk taking behaviour, and the evidence discussed has suggested that there are many different aspects of media that may influence different risk taking behaviour. For example, drugs may be discussed positively on social media, and alcohol is shown as positive on television. Overall, this chapter fulfilled the aim that
How the social networking influents young people’s psychological well-being? Since the World Wide Web appeared in the world in the year of 1991, the internet has significantly changed people’s life on almost every level. Especially when the social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, became popular during the last decade, people’s lifestyles have greatly changed by this form of communication, which consequently brings many psychological effects on the young people. As the result, according to the recent researches, the teenagers and the young adults in this era are bearing many mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, and addiction, due to the social
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives, whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, sleeping, or focusing on their own health and condition. However, these same students who are excessive users are often times the students who are more aware of global issues and updates in pop culture through the use of social media. Students who moderately use social networking applications spend a good amount of time on these applications and are still able to manage time for sleeping, practicing good eating habits, homework, and studying. These students are usually just as aware, or slightly less aware, than students who excessively use social networking.
The decline in casual drugs use may be unrelated to the war on drugs. Furthermore, stressors at a macro level such as economic deprivation, inequality, structural discrimination, and other pervasive stressors in the environment may serve as risk factors for drug use. Also family and peer influence is a strong correlate of drug use. The widespread prevalence of use of marijuana among youth, continues to generate a moral panic, even though evidence states that marijuana usage causes few significant health or behavioral problems to vast majority of the people who consume
According to Columbia University’s National Center on Addiction and Abuse, also known as CASA, recently polled more than 2,000 teens online or by phone. The result also showed that compared to teens who don’t visit social networking sites daily, rather than those who do are: five times more likely to use tobacco, three times more likely to drink alcohol, and twice as likely to use marijuana. Students with depression will try to do anything they can to feel more accepted by others in order to cope with depression and feel better; so, if they see other people happy by using illegal substances, then they may think that this will help them feel better or even not be depressed at all. Students who do this may feel better for a little bit, but as time goes on, it will still have a negative affect due to the fact that it can become addicting and it is also illegal. Not only does social media have an impact on college students mental health, it also has an impact on college students perspective on their lives: whether or not they feel as if they don’t have any purpose of living
There has been controversy as to whether parents should limit the use of social media by teenagers. Teenagers feel that there is no need to limit the use of their social media networking, but on the other hand, parents should feel the need to limit their use and also keep track of their teen’s social networking. Social media allows students to be connected with their peers, teens who post positive status are more likely to be involved in extracurricular activities, and for many teens putting up “selfies” is a self confidence boost; however, too much social media can affect students GPA in school, cyber bullying can affect social health. Social media networks can give out personal information. Social media sites such as Facebook are one of the most popular social media sites that has 700,000-750,000 members joining each day.
The correlation between the development of youth and social media has become blatant. Although few of the consequences are favorable, the majority have displayed a negative impact. The drive social media can implement on youth is exceptional. The pressure and strain social media can place on our youth is an enduring force which leads individuals to question themselves as a person and feel inclined to fit a norm expressed in media and social media of our society. The underlying force social media can play in the lives of the youth is astonishing and is a force that must be dealt with and controlled, for it not only holds the power to give an individual strength, but also to break them down.
In society today, social media has become a normality in many lives. People use social media outlets to keep up with friends, promote their businesses, and meet new people. There are many reasons to avoid the use of social media as a teenager, whether it be social pressures in general, or health risks When used properly the impact of social media can be extremely positive and helpful; however, some users abuse these social networks. Most social media users are teenagers and these networks have shown to have quite the negative impact.

Friends and acquaintance have the greatest influence of using drugs during adolescence.
We live in a world that has become addicted and dedicated toward social media and it is driving America’s youth into the ground. Teenagers and adults are so wrapped up in social media that is runs their lives every day. Constantly people are checking their phones for the latest on social networks.
