Due to the evolution of social media and technology, friendship has changed. The way people interact, hang out, and make plans has shifted from my mother to mine. Now 48 years of age, Sauertig has always lived in Montville, New Jersey, attending its public high school and graduating in 1984. Since technology, like the invention of a cell phone or the Internet, has changed dramatically since her teenage years, Sauertig was a good candidate to interview and compare to my teenage lifestyle. Technology and social media are always developing, allowing for connections to be made easier, changing friendships completely.
A major shift, due to social media and technology, is interactions among friends. Social media and technology have allowed people to constantly be able to interact. Previously, friends could only interact in person or through house phones (a last case resort for Sauertig). Sauertig was forced to make plans for the upcoming weekend in school or at sporting events after school (she played field hockey and lacrosse). Whereas before Sauertig was only friendly with the group of people she was most often around, I am able to keep a larger friend circle with the accessibility of social media. Today, I am able to make last second plans through texting or calling on a cellular phone or chatting a friend online. Calling a house phone for me is unheard of, not even as a last resort anymore. This shift allows for easy contact to anyone anywhere.
Although technology has had an immense effect on friendships, it has not had as much an effect on hanging out. Sauertig would hang out at one of her friend’s house and mostly just talk or play with makeup. They would also hang out with other guys or go to parties. Although teenagers in hig...

...e to share memories and plan for the future. People can plan events or discover similar interests. Social media also forces people to become better at multi-tasking, a shift that my generation is better at than the ones previously. My generation, having grown up with social media, is more open to it and ready to embrace it.
Social media has revolutionized friendships. It has changed the way people communicate and live. It has developed a desire in the world to constantly want to process new information and communicate. With newer technology, creating plans to hang out has become extremely easy. However, even with these developments, hanging out has not changed very much. As generations become further from this new era, they are more reluctant to oppose social media, unlike the younger generations that are now growing up with it and do not even know the old ways.
Technology today is more relied upon than ever before. If one needs to call someone half way around the world, simply take out a cell phone and dial their number. Within thirty seconds, one can be speaking to that person just as if two people were conversing face-to-face. In the same manner, one has access to endless knowledge and resources by the push of a few buttons or the click of a mouse. The use of social media today is becoming more prevalent than ever before because of the convenience it offers.
Various electronics are frequently used to go on pointless websites, such as Twitter and Facebook, which ruin society’s social abilities. More and more people use social media on the internet as a communication source. This does not apply merely to kids and teens, but adults as well. Using these sorts of websites as a way of communicating causes many individuals’ social skills to decrease. A plethora of children and teens would rather stay inside and interact with their friends through the internet than go hang out with them. Before technology people were not afraid to go up to a random person and talk to them. Now many friendships form through the internet and these friendships are not genuine. When these “friends” meet in person, they find nothing to talk about. For example, I remember after watching Perks of being a Wallflower, a movie taking place in the early nineties, my friends and I discussed how all the characters communicated in person and during hanging out they played games and talked. Now...
Everyone 's social lives have been changed throughout the years because of portable devices. Phones are one of the main reasons why people have less social lives now then back before phones were out. Before, cells phones were a big deal people would have to go out to talk to find out what is going on around them. Now everyone can just get on their phone and on social media and find out what is going on around them without leaving their house or talking to anyone. Another thing is that back before phones and apps people and to go out to meet people face to face, now people can meet someone on dating apps like Hinge and they don 't have to talk to them face to face until they are ready. Another portable device that people use are laptops, which is a portable computer. Back before technology the mall was the only place someone could go and sop at, now people have choice between going to the mall and shopping online. Most people use their
Social media is used by many people, young and old around the world as a way to communicate. Our lives have become so busy that it is difficult to maintain family and social relationships. “They use social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. On these sites users create profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research and share thoughts, photos, music, links and more” (Social Networking). With the use of social media you can be friends with all sorts of people without actually seeing or knowing them. “In many ways, social communities are the virtual equivalent of meeting at the general store or at church socials to exchange news and get updated on friends and families” (Cosmato).
As you can see, in a society where interacting and over-sharing online is a trend, you probably speak to friends and family through electronic devices and social media than face-to-face. Many surveys have been addressed that one in four college students and adults would spend more time socializing online than they do in person. Whenever you attend a classroom, party or club, you can see that there is someone with their head down looking at the phone, ignore the group and reject to speak in a conversation. Moreover, if they have free time in the weekend to hang out, they tend to want to stay at home and chat or text through social media. As a result, the relationships is deteriorating,
In the past decade, technology brings huge impacts on social interaction. From phone call to facetime, from blog to Facebook. Advance technology enables us to reach and communicate with people in a more convenient and broad way, no matter how far these people are away from us. Medium of communication are growing. However, some old ways of communications never fade out. And I am going to talk about
When was the last time you talked to your friends in person, not over text messages, Facebook or Twitter? In order to answer the question you would have to think about it first. It is not secret that social media is something that is controlling our lives everyday. In fact, it is something that comes natural to society to communicate with others through a screen. Whether it is a computer screen or phone screen, this screen is taking over our lives. In fact, according to www.pewinternet.org , “81% of online teens use some kind of social media. As a teenager, I go on Social media everyday, it is something that comes natural to my everyday life. Also, it is an easy way for me to communicate with family and friends. Bizjournals.com states that, “Smartphone users check Facebook 's website 13.8 times a day, on average, and spend a total of half an hour each day on the social network on their phones”. Social media is taking over our everyday lives, without us realizing it. What if social media did not exist, how would people
Communication plays an important role and becomes an essential part in our daily lives. Today we have taken communication to new level as social media and social networking. They have had a tremendous impacts on the word, on our culture and in business as well. Social media websites are some of the most popular on the internet, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. They are the places where people can interact with others easily and expose themselves to strangers. Our generation and the younger ones have more opportunities to grow up with the new development of technology that will shape the way they live of communicating and sharing ideas. The social media causes some problems that lead to less social interaction and negatively affect students academic, but it also brings benefit to people that creates new social connections to bring people from all over the world to be closer.
Social media sites such as Facebook are one of the most popular social media sites that has 700,000-750,000 members joining each day. Connecting with peers shouldn’t be a problem. It’s as easy typing the peers name push search, and some suggestions come up and find your peer you’re looking for and shoot them a message instantly with social media manly targeting young people such as teenagers. In the twenty -first century, teenagers live in a life of social networking and life’s online. It’s hard to believe how much the world has changed over the decades, especially in technology. Technology helps people to contact relatives and friends from long distance more easily and conveniently. People can now talk to each other from everywhere in the world simply through chat and video calls. By time, internet connections have spread throughout households and social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram has increased gradually. However, the internet and several modern technologies have wasted many times and has hurt the society. Social media plays such a big role in people’s lives that some people couldn’t even imagine
Social media has created a social problem in society and it is distorting how people are communicating with each other face to face. Social media in today’s day is seen as a worldwide antisocial epidemic amongst the younger generation and a few older adults born in the millennial. Social media is notably used more by the younger people in our society and around the world, considering that technology is more accessible and easier to use for them. This is because their generation was born into a technological and advancing society that it has adapted into modern society’s culture. Social media has become a part of today’s norm, in which people who own a smart phone have downloaded some sort of social media app in order to stay intact with family
Consider a situation where a family is sitting at the dining table, the son pull out his iPhone, connects to Wi-Fi, and starts chatting with his friends on “Facebook”. The father has a Samsung Galaxy S4 in his hands and he is reading the newspaper online and using “Whatsapp” messenger while having his meal. The mother is busy texting her friends. They are all “socializing” but none of them has spoken as much as a single word to each other. This situation can be commonly seen nowadays. Technology has brought us closer and squeezed the distances but in reality, it has taken us away from each other. The rapid growth of technology has brought about significant changes in human lives, especially in their relationships. The latest technologies have turned this world into a “global village” but the way humans interact with each other, the types of relations and their importance has changed a lot. The advancement in technology has brought us close but has also taken us apart.
“In order to maintain a positive on-going relationship in any difficult face-to-face circumstance, an individual must learn the appropriate socialization rituals. Knowing these rituals and being able to play a proper front stage role is crucial in order for an individual to get along with others (Brignall and Valey, 2005).” With the relatively recent rise of social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, the means for maintaining relationships through these platforms rather than speech communication and face-to-face communication are becoming much more apparent and widespread throughout society. However, it is difficult to maintain these relationships without knowing proper social skills especially if these skills are not practiced or introduced to an individual. Although, “Communication frequency and self-disclosure play a role in computer-mediated communication and the formation of online friendships just as they do in face-to-face interactions and offline friendships (Subrahmanyam and Greenfield, 2008).” Yet, in our vast digital world that we reside in today, the ways in which we choose to communicate are becoming hindered by our participation in online communication. “We must have a philosophical understanding of the purpose and importance of communication to individuals and based upon this understanding, shape our attitude and value toward the communication process (McFarlane, 2010).” It is extremely crucial to understand communication’s importance and to not tuck the original beliefs and values regarding the tool underneath the rug, resorting and succumbing to communicating poorly in a fashion that mimics what we have now experienced via our devices. “As with any social change, we also believe there is a need to study and understand the impacts that change might have, regardless of whether such changes are viewed as positive or
The social media is one of the most common means of communication and pretty much of knowing anything and everything around the world these days, and it is growing very rapidly. It changes and affects each person in a different way, or ways. Some may argue that social media has a bad influence on children and young adults, while most people see that the social media has a more positive effect on them than a negative one. Social media is basically the new way of keeping in touch with everything and everyone, and of even strengthening bonds between each other. This essay will argue that social media has improved communication between people, and has also improved the means of communication between them.
