Paper 3: Social Inequalities A person’s particular social status can affect their whole life, it can hold someone back or help them move forward. Numerous TV shows and movies can represent America’s social status in our society, for instance, the popular six season TV show Gossip Girl. This particular TV show explores several parts of the social inequalities in our society between the upper and middle or lower class. The show Gossip Girl is mainly about a group of friends from the Upper East Side in New York who attend a prestige private high school. This group of friends consist of children from a generation of wealthy families, representing the upper class or top 1% in our society. They are not wealthy like the other families, they lived in an apartment in Brooklyn as opposed to the penthouses and exclusive hotels. Dan and Jenny Humphrey do attend the prominent high school along with the upper east siders and are often overlooked or left out as outsiders. Even though the middle class family lifestyle of the Humphrey’s is not as glamorous as the upper class, with their income coming from the mother’s art paintings and father’s rocker gigs, they do still live fairly comfortable and attend an expensive school. The upper east siders live a privileged life of balls, expensive dinner parties, and luxurious vacations around the world. Although the show can only represent two particular social statuses of our society, it does an excellent job depicting the difference between them. The wealthy families, for the most part, dislike the lower class and do not want any affiliation with them. For example, in episode 10 of season 1, the grandmother of one of the main wealthy girls did not want her granddaughter dating one of the Humphrey’s and was willing to pay them to end the
