They found a way to create something out of nothing. Obviously, they had to overcome constant obstacles and setbacks on their way to success. A few also faced some morally challenging issues that may have been questionable, which will be addressed later. “In addition to being places of magnificent beauty, the old growth forests of the world represent hundreds of years of life on this planet, and many of the trees are the tallest living things on the planet (Old Growth Forests, 2004).” Because of their size, these trees, and the forests they reside in, are targeted by logging companies such as Weyerhaeuser as highly profitable areas that provide supposed economical benefits to surrounding communities in the way of new jobs.

In this novel, the city Malawi where William lived, they faced the struggle of deforestation. This caused many problems and conflicts for the people who lived there. The government claimed to be cutting down the trees to make desks for local schools, but they never did. During the time when the book was written, investors would cut down trees in Malawi to make fields to plant more tobacco. Even at such a young age, William was able to realize how important of a situation this is and says “Few people realize this, but cutting down trees is one of the things that keeps us Malawians poor.” (Kamkwamba, page 82 ). Malawi used to be covered heavily in forests, but according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, scientists have recently come to the conclusion that forests now only cover 34.4% of Malawi. This just goes to show that deforestation can still have a huge impact, even in smaller countries within

This model was first created to analyze the impact of the firm activities on profit, but recently it is also used by social entrepreneurs to measure the impact of activities on the creation of social value. According to J.Gregory Dees, for business entrepreneurs wealth creation is the way to measure value creation while for social entrepreneurs social value is the way to measure value creation. Sustainability plays a vital role in this relationship in that it provides a solid foundation upon which a business can expand with more temerity and assuredness.
Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. Rather than leaving societal needs to the government or business sectors, social entrepreneurs find what is not working and solve the problem by changing the system, spreading the solution, and persuading entire societies to move in different directions. ust as entrepreneurs change the face of business, social entrepreneurs act as the change agents for society, seizing opportunities others miss to improve systems, invent new approaches, and create solutions to change society for the better. While a business entrepreneur might create entirely new industries, a social entrepreneur develops innovative solutions to social problems and then implements them on a large scale.
