There is no true universal definition or correct perception of reality. Reality can be defined as the state of things as it actually exists, rather than as they may appear or may be thought to be. Many sociologists have determined that reality is different for every individual and two concepts that support this conclusion are the Thomas theorem and Ethnomethodology, which will be briefly discuss in this paper. Social Construction of reality basically states that individual perception of reality is based upon individual belief, background, and experiences. Many sociologists believe that what an individual perceive to be reality is based upon the culture norms that individual was raised with and what is considered acceptable by society. For instance, in the more developed/central parts of our country it is considered socially acceptable for women to be out in the work force. However, in certain cultures it is not considered acceptable for a woman to work outside of the home. One woman’s reality might that it is important to get an education and have a good job, while from the other woman’s point of view that is a man’s responsibility. From walkmans to CD players to iPods, technology has evolved over the succession of the years; humans have taken extensive steps towards a technological transformation that has revolutionized the manner in which several individuals communicate with one another. Likewise, various humans have opted for more modern methods to connect and contact their loved ones such as speaking on a cell phone, video chatting, e-mailing, instant messaging, and conversing through social media. With these contemporary methods of communication, global interaction has now been facilitated and easily accessible; conversing with individuals from across the world is as transparent and prompt as speaking with individuals within the same city. Nonetheless, these technological
Throughout history people have used marijuana for its dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds to relieve pain, stress, and other medical issues from one’s life. Within the recent years it has become one of the most debated issues in the United States. In the 1930s, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Narcotics (now the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs) claimed that marijuana was a “gateway” drug and was a powerful, addicting substance. During the sixties marijuana became a symbol for rebellion against authority so it became very popular by college students and “hippies”. So in 1982, Drug Enforcement Administration increased pressure on drug farms and houses which decreased the use of marijuana. In the past twenty years marijuana has become a
Social construction of reality is the act of a person shapes his reality following the ideas of a group or culture. In social construction of reality, we shape our beliefs and ideas because our social group beliefs on those ideas. The society creates its own definition of reality, and imposes rules for all individuals of the group. Communication is the essential tools for maintenance of the social structure. Our society for example, has the same jointly build ideas of the world, but other society in china for example has another group of ideas of the world. This is social construction of reality. Imagine
From the start of the human history, information traveled as fast as a ship could sail, or a horse could run, or a person could walk. It gradually began to change. At the invention of telegraph, information could be sent quicker. So communication was anticipated, it was more of a waiting period to reach to the second person. Then the second person received the letter or telegraph, sent the answer back, which was very time-consuming. Nevertheless, communication between people face-to-face was fundamental. It was as necessary as breathing, therefore back in the days, there were a lot of gatherings, and it was characterized by simplicity, friendliness, and socialness. But the technology completely changed the daily lives of ordinary people. Now days, people are more immediate.
The way in which the body is viewed is a complete social construction, dependent on the society, history and wider cultural attitude of a given group. Social constructionism can be defined as the ways in which society, culture and history builds up and dictates social norms. It shapes the way we think, behave and interact with our environment. The social construction of bodies is, therefore, the way in which society ascribes significance to different parts of the body and influences our understanding of it as a whole. The social construction of the body feeds into and reinforces inequalities to a great extent, on a number of levels. Gender inequalities and the issues of racism and colourism are good examples of inequalities that are fuelled
A sociological imagination is when one can consider everyday life from the perspective of a sociologist. For example, when someone goes to a sporting event, their purpose is to cheer on their favorite team and to have fun. In reality, though, they are participating in collective effervescence. This is when a large group of people, with different backgrounds, come together to all support the same event. A person with a sociological imagination would understand and think about what sporting events are actually representing. This imagination is primarily a way for people to think about the world in a different and exciting way.
Social interaction is the very basis of social life and the foundation of society. Further growth and progress in society would not be possible without interactions between individuals. However, the presence of an individual as a function of society does not bind them into a social unit. It is when a group of people cooperate that allows society to develop. Therefore, interaction is the very essence of social process. Furthermore, communication is the medium of interaction. The ability to communicate with other individuals is an important element of human life in terms of interacting and developing our society. Individuals thrive from success through the approval of others. In communication, an individual develops from the views and opinions of another person. It is important to consider that as a result of society's development, our system of communication also changed. While maintaining the traditional way of communicating such as physical interactions, individuals turn to other forms of socializing through the use of video games and the internet.
Numerous sociologists have contributed to research society and social interactions. In other words, society has been studied through how humans interact and shape their environment. There are many developed theories and different approaches for these findings, and sociologists have helped us understand the ways society functions. Amongst their many findings is that we construct reality through our interactions with others. This is also known as the social construction of reality, which is defined as different social behaviors, patterns and rules, influencing the human perception of reality. Social behaviors, like ethnocentrism and cultural relativism, plays a role in human behavior. Understanding, significance, and meaning are developed not
“We barely have time to pause and reflect these days on how far communicating through technology has progressed. Without even taking a deep breath, we’ve transitioned from email to chat to blogs to social networks and more recently to twitter” (Alan 2007). Communicating with technology has changed in many different ways. We usually “get in touch” with people through technology rather than speaking with them face to face. The most popular way people discuss things, with another individual, is through our phones. Phones have been around way before I was born in 1996, but throughout the years, they have developed a phone called a “smart phone”. The smart phone has all kinds of new things that we can use to socialize with our peers. On these new phones, we can connect with our friends or family on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Technology has also developed Skype, a place you can talk with people on the computer with instant voice and video for hours. The new communication changes have changed drastically from the new advances made in technology through our smart phones, social networking sites, and Skype.
In conclusion conceptual relativism sets out to explain the world in term of the human mind to construct realities, and is concerned with truth and knowledge and radical Social constructionism is concerned with the idea that a variety of phenomena’s are socially constructed. This is then linked with the idea of radical anti-realism in relation to reality and the validity of science. Both are definitely problematic for any claim that the social sciences produce reliable knowledge for if knowledge is only meaningful to one group how can that have the same meanings to another group each individual sees the world through their own glasses so each and every individual holds a different opinion and no one opinion can be correct. How can any methods of research be correct if there is no real truth?

Technology has brought us closer and squeezed the distances, but in reality, it has taken us away from each other. The rapid growth of technology has brought about significant changes in human lives, especially in their relationships. The latest technologies have turned this world into a “global village” but the way humans interact with each other, the types of relationships and their importance has changed a lot. The advancement in technology has brought us closer, but has also taken us apart. In the past, the means of communication were limited.
The first area where technology and society relates most is communication. People in a society must pass information from one person to another to maintain order. Traditionally, information dissemination was done using inefficient methods such as the messengers and would take long time before it reached to the intended recipient depending on the distance. Technological advancement that resulted in introduction of more efficient means of communication such as mobile phones and computers led to contextualization of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT). This had a direct impact on the society as now information could be disseminated amongst a larger group and in the contemporary wo...
