Social classes are divisions of individuals based on the amount of money one has. These classes are defined by one’s wealth and economic success. Social classes can determine what kind of life one may have and some of the obstacles they may have to deal with. The social classes are like ideas of levels, the higher the level one may be on, the more opportunities they come upon. Within the United States, there are three social classes; these are lower class, middle class, and upper class. The first social class this is more associated with most people in the United States is the “lower class.” The lower class could also be considered as the “working class.” People in the lower class usually are homeless, unemployed, or living in poverty. This group is typically small. These people are more known individuals such as actors and artist. Even though the group is fairly small compared to others, it is also divided into two subsections. The subsections are “lower-upper” and “upper-upper.” The lower- upper class are people who have money because they worked for it. They invest in things that will produce more money for them in the future. An example of someone who might fall into the “lower -upper” class is Will Smith. Will Smith fits under this category because he invested in a clothing company, because of that he will make money which will keep in the upper class. Because of the company, Will Smith will most likely always have some sort of money coming to him. People who fall under the “upper-upper” class are considered rich because the money has been passed on and on between generation of family members. An example of someone who might fall under the “upper-upper” class is someone who has parents as celebrities, like Blue Ivy, because both of her parents are famous she will grow up and be considered rich because of what her family will be able to pass to her. These people typically never work for money. The people who fall under the upper class social class are people are on top. Social Classes are groups of people with common economic statuses. What is social class you ask? Social class is a system created to categorize people by education, wealth and heredity. What are the different class systems you ask? There are several class classifications and they’re Upper Class–Elite, Upper Middle Class, Lower Middle Class, Working Class and poor. In the united states and being a victim of “ social class categorizing” is an issue that must be addressed and people must be made aware, because it seems as if it’s not going anywhere anytime soon so the least we can do is try and make it fair as possible. Being defined unknowingly by a class system is one thing, but having no say so or fair opportunity at being placed in the best “class system” as those more fortunate than others needs to change because it’s not like we all came out of our mothers womb starting the race of life at the same starting and advantage point, and since we as Americans pride our-self on being the land of the free and equal opportunities I feel compelled to inform you of the unfairness of the issue and state ways to make it fair. In an article read while doing research this is how the author defined Social class “Classism is similar in many ways to racism, sexism, heterosexism and other forms of oppression. Classism appears individually through attitudes and behaviors, institutionally through policies and practices, and culturally through norms and values. Like other forms of oppression and prejudice, it is the tendency to make sweeping generalizations or stereotypes about people, such as “Poor people are lazy.”(Class Action) This essay will assess the determination of social classes in the United States and will seek to provide examples to demonstrate the inequalities and provide ways to improve them.

Social class is a group of people who rank closely in property, prestige, and power. Within these social classes exist some properties of class level that are characteristic of their ranking. The first of these is property. Property consists of furniture, jewelry, bank accounts, and other materials that can be quantified into monetary value. (Henslin, 2014) Basically, they are things that can be quantified to add up in quantified value end up un a sum of monetary value. This value is termed wealth. This is different from income. Income is known as the flow of money. Prestige is the next characteristic looked at when determining social class. Prestige is the value which different groups of people are judged with. (Henslin, 2014) Different occupations within society offer varying levels of prestige. The final aspect looked at when determining class is power. Power is defined as the ability to exert your will within society. (Henslin, 2014) The reason to review this is because different classes of society all maintain these aspects at higher or lower degrees, with the upper tier having the
According to David Croteau, the social class is “a group of people who share a roughly similar economic position and lifestyle,” a large group of people who rank closely to one another in property (wealth), power, and prestige, according to Weber. Stratification systems “are made up of social structures and cultural norms that create and maintain inequality by ranking people into a hierarchy of groups that receive unequal resources.” We used these terms and Dennis Gilbert and Joseph Kahl’s model of social class ladder to identify our family position by using the Dennis Gilbert and Joseph Kahl’s model. According to Dennis Gilbert and Joseph Kahl’s, they used education, occupation, and income to determine social class. By using their model to determine where my family and I are on the ladder based on education, occupation, and income, I would say my family will be in the working class because my mom and dad never finished high school nor went to college.
Class in the American Culture is based on economic and social differences, and it remains a powerful force in American life and has come to play a greater role in today’s society. American culture classified social classes as three different levels, the higher class which is classified as the wealthier and have the most money and a certain lifestyles and clothes. The middle class more like the businesses, people who have a reasonable income. And the last class is the low class which are the working class people. Those in the upper middle classes enjoy better health and live longer than those in the middle classes, who live longer and better than those at the bottom. That 's because money, good jobs and connections help the better-off get the best medical care. People in the upper class also maintain a certain lifestyle and sometimes different clothing lifestyle than the ones in the lower classes.
As being 18 and still living with my parents, defining my social class would be middle class and I am very lucky to be in the middle class because it's not the best and definitely not the worst. My parents have always provided me with what I need to get by and survive. I have a roof over my head, 3 meals a day, and even my own car. Being middle class ties into the social location because it shows the that society labels us by groups with our family or own income in which that can “label” our place in society.

There are many levels of social classes but the four general social classes are the upper, middle, working, and lower. Each of these classes however can be broken down into smaller social classes. For example my family is in the middle class but the middle class itself can be divided into the upper-middle-class and the lower-middle-class. The upper-middle-class members, although rich, live on earned income rather than accumulated or inherited wealth(Benokraitis, p. 142). While the lower-middle-class, which is more diverse than the upper-middle-class, is composed of people in nonmanual and semiprofessional occupations(Benokraitis, p. 143). Living in a lower-middle-class family I am very fortunate and have lots of privileges because of how hard my parents work each day and
