Social class has always had an intangible presence in society; it often predetermines the lifestyle of an individual. In William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”, it is Emily’s inherited social class and family name that gives her a higher social status. Alternatively, in Katherine Mansfield’s “The Garden Party”, it is both Laura’s family and wealth that allow her to remain in her high-class position. Laura is a young girl, and wealth is all she has ever known. In Laura’s story, her family throws an extravagant garden party. Her environment is so grand that “hundreds [of roses] [coming] out in a single night” (Mansfield, 328) seems almost standard to Laura and shows her familiarity to fine things. The respect of Laura’s community towards her class is portrayed through the grieving widow’s sister. Upon learning of the death that occurred in the lower class cottages, Laura brings a basket of food to the widow. She is politely greeted by the Widow’s sister and is welcomed into their home. The widow is heartbroken and unable to make conversation with Laura. Although this is appropriate behavior due to the widow’s circumstances the sister asks Laura to “excuse her” (Mansfield, 337). While Emily lives comfortably, it is clear that her wealth and ambition is not as abundant as Laura’s. Laura’s house and garden are immaculate while Emily allows her house to decay to the point where it is “an eyesore among eyesores” (Faulkner, 251). Laura and her family pride themselves on appearance and would avoid this fate at all costs. This shows a major difference between the two high-class lifestyles. The most blatant difference between the two women is their desire for interaction. A major theme in “A Rose for Emily” is isolation, Emily chooses to keep to herself and avoid communication with the townspeople up until her death. While she reaps the benefits of her social class, she does nothing to maintain that position unlike Laura and her family. Laura’s household thrives on interaction; they host lavish parties and wear clothes that mirror their social standing. They enjoy projecting their level of class onto their everyday activities. Social class is an undying concept that every individual inadvertently belongs to. Through Emily and Laura’s experiences in Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” and Mansfield’s “The Garden Party”, it is clear that belonging to a high social class exposes you to more luxuries, and a provides you with a higher level of respect from lower
But I think this book is more for those people who aren’t that aware of social class, or for the ones who feel that we live in a society that is classless, rather than the actual people who have realized the consequences that class really has on someone’s life. Many people can relate to what stories are told in the book; if not, they know of a person that can relate to these stories. As a person that grew up in the lower class, I can definitely relate to most of the stories told in this book. From experience, there is a big difference in this country between the rich, middle class, and the poorest that we see daily. Even those in the so-called working class have to make continuous sacrifices and live very differently from those positioned firmly in the middle class.
Ever since she was a young girl. Jeannette had set high goals for herself. Since she was so advanced in school and genuinely enjoyed learning, it made sense that she would want to do big things with her life. Whether it was being a veterinarian or a geologist, her dreams extended far beyond her homes in little desert towns or Welch, West Virginia. However, because of her poverty-stricken home life, many people believed it didn’t seem likely that she would be so successful. One day, while living in Welch, Jeannette goes to the bar to drag her drunk father back home. A neighborhood man offers them a ride back to their house, and on the ride up he and Jeannette start a conversation about school. When Jeannette tells the man that she works so hard in school because of her dream careers, the man laughs saying, “for the daughter of the town drunk, you sure got big plans” (Walls 183). Immediately, Jeannette tells the man to stop the car and gets out, taking her father with her. This seems to be a defining moment in which Jeannette is first exposed to the idea that she is inferior to others. Although this man said what he did not mean to offend her, Jeannette is clearly very hurt by his comment. In "Bums in the Attic," a chapter from her novel The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros discusses the differences between groups in which the upper class ignores anyone not belonging to the same leisure status. Those belonging to the lower classes however, has had to work to gain success and cannot forget the past in which he struggled. Isolation dominated the seventy four-year life of Emily Grierson in 'A Rose for Emily' by William Faulkner. Never in this story did she live in harmony with anyone one short time. Even when she died of age at seventy four, people in Jefferson town rushed into her house not because they wanted to say goodbye forever to her but because they wanted to discover her mystic house. Many people agreed that it was the aristocratic status that made Emily?s life isolated. And if Emily weren?t born in the aristocratic Grierson, her life couldn't be alienated far away from the others around her.

In Grace Stone Coates’ “Wild Plums” the reader is presented with two disparate families: one of class and privilege, an unnamed family of the story’s protagonist, and a family of meager farmers, the Slumps. Social class is an underlying factor to which all characters run their lives. It is always a priority and influenced most, if not every part of their lives. Most of the characters in the novel respect the rules of class and are always trying to climb the social ladder. Or if they are atop this ladder, they make it a mission that they remain there. These words apply to Katherine Mansfield’s short story, “Garden Party” as she touches on some very controversial points about the social inequality of the Sheridan family with its surrounding neighbors. A great internal and external quarrel over social class rises in the Sheridan family as Laura Sheridan, the daughter, sympathises with the less-fortunate neighbors while her mother, Mrs. Sheridan is the opposite.
