Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” (Nelson Mandela). Education is a very important tool for children to achieve their goals. The motive of education should be to help students gain the knowledge and skills so that they will be able to succeed in life. Every student deserves to be educated in a positive environment where they feel motivated and engaged in their learning. The education system needs to offer equal education opportunities regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds.
In the reading “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work”, author Joan Anyon implies that schools are separated into different socioeconomic backgrounds and the curriculum taught in the schools reflect on the expected careers

The schools try to accommodate the needs that the students will possess in the future, but how will they know what the future holds for them. People assume that these students will end up in the same position as their parents and teach according to those specifications. In the working class schools teachers simply teach students what they assume they are able to learn and what they are need to learn in order to follow in the footsteps of their parents. The students are not being taught to become great things in life or be in positions of authority. They are being trained to follow orders without questioning. On the other hand, middle and higher classified schools are teaching on a different level and offer more opportunities. There are many students in low-income communities that do not receive the same type of knowledge as those who come from high income environments. Students who attend the higher classified schools have greater advantages of succeeding than the other students. Every student should be giving the same opportunities in schools regardless of their social class. Schools …show more content…
Education requires a large amount of funds so that schools are allowed to purchase the resource needed for students. Many schools are underfunded and do not have the opportunity to provide even the most basic essential for the students. Poorly funded schools are unable to provide such things as programs that encourage students to undertake further education. Where as, those who attend good well-funded schools have the best chance of academic success regardless of their families socioeconomic status. Some schools have plenty of resources while other schools are struggling to get basic supplies for the students. It is very important that students receiving a good education no matter what school they attend or Community they live
Many great minds believe that education is a powerful tool. Investing in your education is the most valuable and most rewarding thing a person can do to secure their future. Influential people who have brought positive changes to the world have said: “The investment in knowledge pays the best interest”. (Franklin). “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. (Nelson Mandela). “A brighter future starts with an education”. (Montgomery).
Some people may believe that education all over the United States is equal. These people also believe that all students no matter their location, socioeconomic status, and race have the same access and quality of education, but ultimately they are wrong. Throughout history, there has been a huge educational disparity between the wealthy and marginalized communities. The academic essay “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work” by Jean Anyon, an American critical thinker and researcher in education, conveys that depending on the different economic backgrounds students have, they will be taught in a specific way. He reveals that the lower economic background a child has then the lower quality their education will be and the higher their economic background is the higher quality their education is. Anyon’s theory of a social ladder is extremely useful because it sheds light on the

My educational development has primarily been in the private school system. My younger sister attended public schools as well as my son so I have some experience with them as well. I am going to summarize three scholarly essays I have read and compare them to my own academic history.
Society sets up this imaginary brick wall in life in the mainstream population. On one side of the wall are the formally educated people that have attended everything from prestigious universities to liberal arts colleges. On the other side of the wall are the uneducated people who do not have a fancy name or degree to boldly say that they are educated in respects to society. Many times, the people on the uneducated side of the wall come from lower economic income and class status than the educated side. In the essay, "Learning In The Key Of Life"Jon Spayde links society, class, and education. Spayde notes that education takes place in the classroom and university setting as well as the hands on experience that takes place in the world at large. One of the main points in his essay is that in society, education is a great value that separates classes by economics. The general understanding in society is that there is no divide in American life that hurts more than the one between those we consider well educated and those who are poorly or inadequately schooled (Spayde, 60). This understanding is defined by popular society stating that education is a big influence on how one lives their life and to what degree this is done. Society determines the difference between the educated and uneducated in many ways.
Social class should not be used to define a person. Every person has the ability to overcome the roadblocks that society has placed in their path, so long as they have the determination and motivation. In Gerald Graff’s article, “Hidden Intellectualism” , he explains how social class is irrelevant when it comes to education, despite what society will lead you to believe. He displays how everyone is intelligent in his or her own way.Lynda Barry during her article, “ The Sanctuary of School” spoke about the importance of education to her and many other students like her.Another writer, Mike Rose shows how despite the thoughts that society puts in our heads we can still be successful in his article “Blue Collar Brilliance”.Regardless of social
Students who live below the poverty line have less motivation to succeed, and their parents are less inclined to participate in their child’s education, often because the parents cannot provide support for their children. Although it’s logical that school districts from poorer communities cannot collect as much funding as the richer communities, people stuck in these low-income communities often pay higher taxes, and still their school districts cannot accumulate as much money.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Educational systems can help or hinder the prospect of social mobility. Although many teachers work hard to ensure against favoritism, this is not always the case, partly because of the stigma attached to social class. Educators may give special opportunities to certain groups of children. Particularly children from high-class families are sometimes viewed as being more intelligent than those from lower social classes but if you have a good teacher that see’s the potential in you they will help you excel in school. Class influenced my choices of school, place of residence and most importantly the friends I make.
There are many different factors that affect education. One such factor is, socioeconomic status. Children who attend school in a wealthier community receive a better education than those students in poor communities. In poor communities, student’s education is not only affected by a lack of resources, but also from teaching methods and philosophies. Urban and poor schools’ students do not receive as equal of an education as their more affluent and suburban counterparts do.
Students that live lower socioeconomic areas do not have the same quality public education as students that live in a higher socioeconomic area. The students in lower socioeconomic areas receive a poor public education. These schools lack highly qualified teacher, and resources to be successful. The test scores are lower not because these students are not able to be educated but because the state is lacking in funding for these schools. 2.
How social class impacts education In all the different social groups, class plays a key role in the attainment or success of children in education. In the educational system it is apparent that lower class children achieve lower attainment than those that come from a middle class background (Tzanakis, 2011: 79-86). It is believed or suggested that the educational system is biased and intended for the middle class children with no regard to the needs of the working class. Nonetheless, most researchers believe or think that the ‘range of ability’ in every social class is similar (Tzanakis, 2011: 79-86).
Education is needed for not only students but also for the general
Education provides the opportunity for individuals to think freely, so that they can see the problems in society. Through education,
It is suggested that teachers and educational institutions judge pupils by characteristics that relate to their social class rather than their intelligence or ability to do the work. One study has shown that teachers report that after only eight (8) days they have a student in their class, they can predict the level of schooling and will “label” each student. It is the lower class students who feel demoralized and give up without even trying to succeed. With no support from family, most of these students start school unable to read, test poorly, and are absent a lot. You will find that there are programs in place to help the lower class achieve higher education, such as federal grants and loans, and are more advertised in poor populations.
The great philosopher Plato said, “The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future in life.” This quote emphasizes the importance of education and the effect it can have on one’s future. Education prepares the next generation not only to be successful, but also to become a force of change in the world. Being successful and being a change in the world is only possible when one is fully equipped with the knowledge to dispense success. However, education faces one detrimental variable that limits the success of students- inequity.
