Social class is a defining concept to each typical American family as it characterizes their place in society. It is important to use a structural diversity framework when demonstrating how class variation produces different social opportunities for each family. Structural conditions, such as class, race, and gender, all affect families differently, and create diverse family arrangements depending on their structural location. Many would say Americans spend more on things they do not need than families did on the past. With a steadily increasing housing market and education becoming more and more important to the social class level of a person, however, Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Warren Tyagi argue against this notion by saying families only spend more on providing a home with a safe neighborhood and good school district in order to ensure a better future for their children. As they both say in Why Middle Class Mothers and Fathers are Going Broke, “For most middle-class parents, ensuring that their children get a decent education translates into one thing: snatching up a home in the small subset of school districts that have managed to hold on to a reputation of high quality and parent confidence” (Warren 406). Because of this rising need for a good education, as the economy shifts and causes housing prices to rise, parents must find new ways to create an income in order to provide. Warren and Tyagi would argue this caused a “bidding war,” and parents began the now common concept of a second income; “By the early 1980s, women’s participation in the labor force had become a significant factor in whether a married couple could buy a home” (Warren and Tyagi 409). As stated previously, for middle class families this second family income is the new common dynamic within social class rankings. Not everything is based on consumption, one may argue today parents would do anything to provide for their children, which makes families in lower social classes have a harder time as they cannot afford to live in the scarce housing communities with good schools that may provide a better future for their
Today 's generation have changed many ways since the beginning of the century. In “The American Family”, Stephanie Coontz discusses many situations that has occurred during the beginning of the 21st century and suggested solutions to solve those issues in the future. For instance, she argued that women are being treated unfairly, family are not discussing their problems openly, and institutions need to change to fit the families’ requirement. In “Complexity of Family Life among the Low-Income and Working Poor” Patricia Hyjer Dyk, argued that women still doesn’t have enough choices, low income families doesn’t have enough jobs, and Government are not helping many families. Dyk’s review of the scholarly research on low-income families support Coontz’ evaluations of the problems faced by 21st century families and the solutions Coontz recommends, like improving women 's lifestyle, discussing problems openly, improving institutions and changing institutions so it can to fit to fulfil families need. .
Putnam refers to this segregation as “residential sorting”, and states that, “residential sorting by income [.] has shunted high-income and low-income students into separate schools,” (163). Rich parents want their kids in the best schools, with the best teachers and the best peers, and are able to afford living in the right areas to send their kids to the right schools. Overall, Robert Putnam’s Our Kids presents an interesting argument about the class inequality in America and the resulting opportunity gap between the upper and lower class. He points out the differences between upper class and lower class family life: upper class have more successful marriages and are better prepared for the bear children, and so their children are better off than the lower class children (61-79).
In his essay “Land of Opportunity” James W. Loewen details the ignorance that most American students have towards class structure. He bemoans the fact that most textbooks completely ignore the issue of class, and when it does it is usually only mentions middle class in order to make the point that America is a “middle class country. This is particularly grievous to Loewen because he believes, “Social class is probably the single most important variable in society. From womb to tomb, it correlates with almost all other social characteristics of people that we can measure.” Loewen simply believes that social class usually determine the paths that a person will take in life. If you have ever read the book 1984 by George Orwell, then an interesting topic may have crossed your mind. The way the classes of people break down can be quite similar, and very different at times. In the United States, we have classes like the lower class, the working class, and the middle class. In 1984, there were such classes as the Proles, the Outer Party, and the Inner Party. The way the classes are broken down in 1984 reminds me a little bit of my old history class. When I studied medieval times and the classes back then were broken down into the nobles, the bourgeois, and the serfs.

The Making of the Ghetto: One of the biggest forms of equity is home ownership, and between 1933 and 1978, the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) supported millions of Americans by providing small down payments and reasonable payment plans, if they fell within their requirements.
The highest earning fifth of U.S. families earned 59.1% of all income, while the richest earned 88.9% of all wealth. A big gap between the rich and poor is often associated with low social mobility, which contradicts the American ideal of equal opportunity. Levels of income inequality are higher than they have been in almost a century, the top one percent has a share of the national income of over 20 percent (Wilhelm). There are a variety of factors that influence income inequality, a few of which will be discussed in this paper. Rising income inequality is caused by differences in life expectancy, rapidly increases in the incomes of the top 5 percent, social trends, and shifts in the global economy.

However, it is used to determine what will be offered to the family, for example, the type of school that each child will attend. But what it does not determine is the success of that student’s education attainment. Money can buy a college education yet, it will not buy literacy.
Out of the numerous commodities and resources that are scarce on the planet in which we inhabit a family, or even a family system, can never be parallel to even an iota of them.
