My face planted firmly in the dirt, eyes watering and face in pain from the dusty impact of the arena. A foot at my back and a voice whispering insults in my exposed ear. “This is what my life has come to”, at least that’s what I thought until I realized that this wasn’t the type of story I was in. There were no epic battles or damsels in distress, no villains to beat, and no tyrants to be had. At least not in the way I just described it. My battle wasn’t in an arena, it was in a high school. And this story most definitely not about a bold girl fighting her way out of a situation. Let’s start with the social bigotry. Social bigotry is a term that us plebeians use to describe the shiny dolls of the popular and social elite. They are the people that would be your opponents in the metaphoric arena. They are the ones that fight you with sharpened swords and other fancy gadgets while the rest of us are stuck using poor quality spears made of flimsy wood and dull stone. They are the characters that present the rest of us with our underlying problems like how we could possibly survive the constant whispers of how the socially inept (weirdos, crazy kids, lame kids, etc.) are just that, socially inept. These are also the characters that will eventually provide you a challenge of whose smarter or who can get the coveted position of valedictorian. But, they aren’t the ones you truly need to fear, that title is reserved for those labeled as teachers. In high school, your teacher could be the kryptonite to your future. You might end up with the nice teachers who are truly focused on your education or you could end up with those teachers that remind you of monsters that you needed to fear in children’s stories. Those are the ones the final bosses of each level of your high school game. They are the difference between us walking across that stage for a diploma and us being stuck in school for a repeat of rounds. I read the book Killing Mr. Griffin, by Lois Duncan. There was an English teacher, Mr. Griffin, which nobody liked. He was a tough teacher, and didn’t give anyone an A. Not even the smartest student, Susan McConnell. They disliked him so much that they wanted to try and scare him by kidnapping him.
Any purported ideology pointing to the political emancipation of the people and attempting to make them rebel is criminalized. Authoritarian rule forms the underlying theme in the novel. It should also be noted that human conflict as a major theme that helps to upstage the former (Authoritarian rule) theme. One experiences the satirical self-glorified human thirst for control often driven by greed and corrupt ideologies to build and gain total control over the populace under them. This thought is held to the effect that the Big Brother party is an epitome of authoritarian and dictatorial governance in the modern world founded on deception and lies.

Stereotypes still happen in today’s time but thankfully not nearly as bad is back then. This novel showed so many ways of it, and sadly people still get treated like that and are judged for how they act, their race, what they believe in ect.. It will never be tolerated and people do react and stick up when they see it

Although bigotry and segregation were pointed in majority towards blacks, other accounts towards whites were also heard of, though not as commonly. There are acts that are so discreet that you almost don't catch them, but along with those, there are blatant acts of bigotry that would never occur in our time. Lee addresses many of these feelings in her novel. One subtle example of discrimination the reader sees is the treatment of Calpurnia, a black woman, the housekeeper/nanny for the Finch family. Although she is treated fairly, it is obvious that she is considered to be on a lower social level than the Finches.
Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World introduces us to a futuristic technological world where monogamy is shunned, science is used in order to maintain stability, and society is divided into 5 castes consisting of alphas(highest), betas, gammas, deltas, and epsilons(lowest). In the Brave New World, the author demonstrates how society mandates people’s beliefs, using many characters throughout the novel. John, a savage, has never been able to fit into society. Moving through two contradicting societies, John is unable to adapt to the major differences of the civilized society due to the different ways upon which it is conducted.
Social issues such as prejudice of African Americans, sexism towards women, the discrimination of Chinese Americans, immigrants, the justice system, religion, poverty, and child abuse, arise. Holden in “The Catcher in the Rye” is an example of how a person often finds it hard to fit in with society. Holden is often afraid of society and social engagements overwhelm him. To avoid his problem he continually isolates himself by insulting others deficiencies and convincing himself he is superior. In “The Joy Luck Club,” the characters are mostly immigrants or children raised by immigrants so fitting in with American society is a common theme.
When we first arrived I’d thought we’d taken a wrong turn and went to a traveling gypsy convention by mistake. The whole field outside the school was filled with tents of various sizes and colors. 200 wrestlers, about thirty of which were girls, filtered about the area. As my soon-to-be teammates and I headed to the first practice, anxiety gnawed at my stomach like a dog with a bone (FL). I wanted to impress everybody, and prove that I could make it in this sport. Before we started, the coach patted me on the shoulder. “I’ve got your back all right.” he told me. I smiled and nodded. At least one person was looking out for me.
This shows that scout has heard the word used at school and assumed that because other people use it, it is not wrong. This demonstrates how racism can be spread across generations. People with racist ideas might not realise that their beliefs are offensive because it is what they have been brought up with. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird expresses the ideology that the social standard of a particular individual, classifies their status in the world. Individuals placed in social classes are labeled to create a sense of social identity. The socio-economic class an individual is born into should not be the determining factor of how the individual is regarded and treated, however, their character and personality should be a primary factor in determining how they are thought of in society.
CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, echoes through my head as I walk to the middle of the mat. "At 160lbs Aidan Conner of La Junta vs. Rodney Jones of Hotchkiss." All I can think of is every bead of sweat, every drip of blood, every mile, every push up, every tear. Why? All of this: just to be victorious. All in preparation for one match, six minutes. For some these six minutes may only be a glimpse, and then again for some it may be the biggest six minutes of their life. Many get the chance to experience it more than once. Some may work harder and want it more than others, but they may never get the chance. All they get is a moral victory. Every kid, every man comes into the tournament with a goal. For some is to win, for some is to place, others are just happy to qualify. These six minutes come on a cold frigid night in February at a place called the Pepsi Center. Once a year this gathering takes place when the small and the large, the best of the best, come to compete in front thousands of people. I am at the Colorado State Wrestling Championships.
As I sit here with my eyes closed, I imagine a tropical breeze. The warm wet air slides over my face. The humidity seems almost heavy enough to crush me. As I take a deep breath, the realization that this is no tropical air comes crashing in. Instead of the refreshing scent of the ocean, or tropical plants, the taste of salt from sweat and a smell of the human body fill my lungs. The daydream is over. A shrill whistle sounds and the voice of coach Chuck booms through out the room, breaking the peace that was comforting the pain in my shoulder and bringing me back to reality. I was not on some humid island paradise, but rather in the explosive atmosphere of the Hotchkiss High School wrestling room.
A high school teacher provides a foundation of knowledge in preparation for the higher expectations of college. The college professor works to encourage independent learning, critical thinking, and self reliance. High school teachers and college professors may have differing points of view, but both affect the world as a whole. Henry Adams once said “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.’
Teachers serve as the guiding force in a student’s life. They are responsible for molding a student’s personality and shaping his/her mental orientation. Teachers deeply impact our lives and direct the course of our future. One cannot deny the influence of teachers in one’s life. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to say that, till a certain age, out life revolves around our teachers. They are our constant companions, until we grow old enough to come out of their shadow and move ahead on our own.
