Intramural sports have been around for ages and may not be as well-known as varsity sports. However, the benefits that come along with them are very significant. In the article “The Social Benefits of Intramural Sports”, Wilson says, “Student participation in intramural sports programs serves to enhance the social element of development whether the participation is individual or in groups” (Wilson 72). This phrase is very relevant to my topic, but it only displays some the good that comes from the participation of intramural sports. Playing in these sports gives the participant a pause on their school-work and the stressful activities that occur in their daily schedule. Students will be able to relax while partaking in intramural sports, which can help reduce stress, ultimately leading to students being more content in their busy life. College students are loaded with homework, exams, quizzes, and studying. Students get overwhelmed and need a break to help. I have great first-hand experience with that. I participated in a NWTC intramural basketball tournament, and at the same time, I had essays and an abundance of homework to complete and I needed a portal to escape the stress. Once I got out on the court, I realized that it was basketball time, and my brain was totally flushed from all the negative outside thoughts. As well as a stress reliever, keeping involved in intramural sports really helps students stay healthy and keep active. College students need to be aware of these activities, as it is a free way to stay in shape and get exercise. Typically, what Sheed is saying is that sports have brought peers, schools, students, and even communities together to share and engage in one thing they love, sports. The people that are not even engaged in the physical aspect of sports are still brought together. They are able to cherish their favorite teams and show pride as their team endures the road to glory.
High school sports are approached with clashing opinions. As can be seen by the preceding information, high school athletics can have a positive impact on a student’s life.
Some schools that still have middle school sports have realized that when a kid plays a sport, they learn new skills that they can apply to real life. Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes.
