Recommended: History of american football

American football became a mix of soccer and rugby. Rugby and soccer both came across the Atlantic and both sports were played at colleges and universities. The earliest history of football told us there was no single variety of the game was played; some schools basically played soccer and others played soccer, while others played many combinations of the two sports. The first commonly billed game of college football was on November 6, 1869 when Princeton and Rutgers college played at Rutgers in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Rutgers beat Princeton 6-4. The owner of the Eagle Bert Bell thought of the idea at the end of the 1934 and other owners agreed, putting the idea into effect in 1936. The order of the draft was determined by the worst teams of the previous season in opposite orders in the standings picking college players. The first ever NFL draft pick was Jay Berwanger who was drafted by the Eagles. During the 1940s few innovations were made to the game, with one known exception: the platoon. Before the 1940s, players would play both offense and defense, instead of just one. (The People History)
CBS broadcasted the 1958 NFL championship. Referred to in the NFL as “The greatest game ever played.” It was played between the Baltimore Colts and New York Giants; the game went to overtime also was the first NFL game to go into overtime. Three different leagues all calling themselves the American Football League (AFL) tried to challenge the NFL as a rival league. They lasted one season each in 1926, 1937, and 1941. There was another competitor, the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). They would become a threat to the NFL. However, the AAFC would eventually merge with the NFL. Receivers are similar except that they also need hand-eye coordination to catch passes and height to outreach the defense. Linebackers must be the most versatile, with strength to take down ball carriers and a combination of speed and coordination to keep up with receivers.
