Introduction I have focused my language study on soccer commentators, there are three games that I will compare the language used in each game by different commentators. Each game had different commentators these commentators are Andy Gray and Phil Parry. The three games are Aresnal vs Liverpool august 2016, Liverpool vs Ac Milan 2005 and QPR vs Derby (2014 playoff final). Radio commentators use different language to make a visual image of the game for those who aren’t watching it. Commentators use different emotions when describing the game to give the listeners a visual point of view of what’s happening. *Commentator’s visual description of the game Andy Gray and Phil Parry are very good at visualizing the game for their audience they do this by talking and describing the game and what’s happening on …show more content…
There are lots of examples of how they do this out of the three games chosen. For example in the Arsenal vs Liverpool game earlier this year the game ended 4-3 to Liverpool with numerous amounts of exciting opportunities for both teams. Quick counter attacking game kept the commentators on their feet like one example during the game arsenal won a penalty then missed and then straight after arsenal went on to score. “Penalty to Arsenal!!, Theo Walcott fouled in the area!. Yellow card to Alberto Moreno, Theo steps up to take the penalty. Penalty saved Penalty saved!! Theo Walcott for Arsenal has missed a chance to take the lead”- Andy Gray. Two minutes later arsenal went onto score after another opportunity Andy Gray Described the goal so well that I visual saw it in my head and imagined what it looked like. “Theo Walcott on another attack he has a few options this time!, he’s cut
James Kenneth McManus, popularly known as Jim McKay, was born on September 14, 1921 in Philadelphia. When growing up, McKay grew a huge passion for sports, starting with horses. His love for horse racing is what led him to eventually pursue a career in journalism. When he was thirteen McKay moved with his family to Baltimore, where he would grow up and later graduate college at Loyola College, class of 1943. McKay began his career as the editor of the Loyola College school newspaper, The Greyhound. His professionalism and sincerity is what led the School of Journalism College President Brian Linnane to consider McKay “one of the few individuals who represented the values and ideals of this institution.” (Kramer, “McManus, James Kenneth (Jim McKay)”)
As a coach, I used a large amount of inappropriate language during coaching, as I would think of this as passion for the game, not really just frustration. Nearly all communication in football uses loud tones to communicate messages, whether the message is a play call or just a coach yelling at a player. When it comes to the written text relate to football whether it be a play, or a breakdown individual or team play. Such as specialized languages to understand football terms within the community or when talking to a coach about an offensive plan, terms may be used like: huddle, line of scrimmage, cover two, corner route, post, and several other terms used exclusively for football. To become a member of this community the team and its players must understand the terms as when a coach says cover two the players all know that it is a specialized defensive passing coverage. We also have someone who is calling the offensive plays in the huddle; who is the Quarter Back (QB) and is often referred to as the signal-caller. Therefore, this means he calls signals, or should I say the plays. He often gets these plays from the head coach on the sideline. This all happens within seconds from the sideline to the huddle, then all players line up on the line of scrimmage and the QB yells signals again. Although, there are all levels of members starting at the youth, to freshman through seniors in high school and college, which will change their language based on what level you, are at. The community specific genres of communication in this discourse community predominantly involve non-verbal methods of communication, including secret hand signals and other body language. This community contains many examples of highly specialized terminology for practically every football play or technique. There are experts players such as juniors and seniors in this community who will provide
There is no lack of visual aids in this video. The entire video is filled with graphs and animation. The use of graphs alone may not have kept the audience as involved. Each graph is presented and is seemingly linked to next through smooth animations. The graphs are presented in a array of colors. However, the colors aren’t to busy as this may strew viewers away from watching all six minutes. The unique pairing of graphs and animation creates a smooth transition from topic to topic. This allows for the audience to follow the meaning of the video. All graphs are explained through the voice-over and a key is also presented. This allowed for the information to broadcasted to the audience clearly and meaningfully. The simplistic way in which this is done is of great value to understanding of the topic to the audience.
Style has been an integral component in the field of linguistics. Linguistic style refers to a person’s speaking pattern, which can include different features such as pace, pitch, intonation, syntactic patterns, etc. Styles of speech is learned, and is often influenced by location, gender, ethnicity, and age. Love is a train that everyone wants on, but nobody knows the trains schedule. In Jane Austen 's Love and Friendship, the speaker Laura is send letters to her friend 's granddaughter about her experiences in life. In Lord Byron 's Don Juan, a young Don Juan finds himself in various situations that all started because of a single woman. Both stories focus on the interactions between the main character and others, but the stories focus on different relationship types. Love and Friendship has an average number of interactions and focuses on all relationship types while Don Juan has few interactions and focuses on mostly on romantic relationships. Of these stories, the better relationships com from Love and Friendship.
The narration of the story has two distinctly different dialects, English and Gaelic. This distinction provides the reader with an understanding of language being an essential aspect and way of interaction in our daily lives. Language is a way to inform people around us of our feelings, thoughts, desires, questions and understanding of the world around us. Communicating effectively by words, tone of voice and gestures betters ourselves and relationships.
Language also changes easy whenever speakers come into contact with each other. No two individuals speak identically: people from different geographical places clearly speak differently, but even within the same small community there are variations according to a speaker’s age, gender, social and educational background. Through our interactions with these different
Analyzing dialects can be difficult due to the fact that is it hard to transcribe the pronunciation of an individual dialect because English is not spelled the same way it is pronounced. Furthermore, one person’s interpretation of spelling a dialect might not match up with another’s, so the reader might not “hear” the dialect properly. Regardless, written versions of dialects are essential to discussing dialectical differences.

Spanish and English may both be widely spoken languages, however English is becoming more and more prevalent as a second language. For this project I interviewed an acquaintance who speaks Spanish as a first language and English as a second language. Spanish and English are similar in aspects such as grammar (in that they are both SVO—subject, verb, object—languages) and vocabulary (since both were influenced by Latin) (Shoebottom n.d.), however they are also quite different, especially in their phonology. These differences are what made learning it as a second language a little more difficult for this interviewee.
All people speak a language and many can speak multiple. Yet, language is not simply English, Spanish, French, and the many others; it is the art of communication that is comprised of dialects, accents, behaviors, and even unspoken rules. Language is continuously affected by these kinds of influences, as well as others, including sports. Sports have influenced and strongly affected language while also impacting the values and structure of the western culture. The many aspects of sport and its environment are what force change on the language people use. When analyzing language and sport it is important to identify the aspects that play into the two. For example, the primary aspects focus on the rhetoric which can be seen affecting the gender
An individual is constructed through many aspects , whether it be their likes/dislikes, personalities, goals or self assigned origin(s), etc. One of these aspects that help build up and sketch an individual is the language they choose to speak. This does not simply include choosing between English or French but choosing or learning to speak high/low language, or the type of slang one uses, and even the rules that are set up with that language the individual has obtained.
Throughout the course of a ninety-minute game, teams and players tend to face enormous adversity. The best players in the world have tremendous analytical aptitude alongside their skills, in order to overcome this adversity. Speaking from experience, I can tell you that being on the field and figuring out a way to elude the defense and score on a net being safeguarded by a player that can use his hands is no easy task. When you step on the field, you and your team have a game plan, but almost never do you stick to that for the entirety of the game. As a team you adjust to the rhythm and tempo of the other team and this can be quite
