Authors, use literary devices, to highlight the certain aspects of living. The novel, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, by Lisa See, utilizes a literary device called foil. In its context, foil is when one character is contrasted with another character. This contrast, is to showcase their difference in traits. It is from these traits that the characters can either help themselves or destroy themselves. The two girls, Lily and Snow Flower, are the foil in the book. Both of these girls are to live together forever in jibe, yet, as time goes on, their relationship becomes strained. Creating this strain, is their difference in personalities. This difference, comes in the form of following orders. Whereas Snow Flower wants to go against orders, Lily …show more content…
It is with these actions that Snow Flower presents her inevitable ability of not following given instructions. Furthermore, from being free of others ruling, Snow Flower is able to keep a level head of the emotions, which dictate her character. These emotions include “trust” and “love”, and, they help her stay “persevering, straightforward [and] outward-looking” (4, 5). The exertion of her traits, are best in the viewing of how she deals with Lily. When Lily questions her of lying throughout their companionship, Snow Flower responds by saying that ‘[she tells her] the truth” (230). Snow Flower manages to show her preserving nature of hoping everything will get better. Although, this is not the case, when Lily humiliates her. Enacting a response to her claim, Snow Flower states that “[she cannot] just [wait for Lily’s choosing of comfort]” and that “[she feels] like a bird flying alone [who cannot find it’s] mate” (231). Thus, destroying the friendship officially, in both of their minds. Adding to this heavy hearted loss of companionship, Snow Flower dies at the end of the novel. In her last days of living, she tells Lily that “[she is] sorry for everything [and hopes that she understands that she still loves her]” (236). Her apology, incases her emotions once again, and, her personality of preserving, even in the face of death. Also in her last moments of life, Snow Flower asks Lily to be “[the] aunt to [her] children” (240) . Praying, that Lily will be able to watch over them, so, they do not ruin any of their relationships like they did. In other words, Snow Flower also exhibits her personality of outward-looking= moving towards the correct direction of life. Even if it takes a new generation to accomplish

Ladies and gentlemen of the Australian Tourist Board, if you are searching for a film to showcase Australia, look no further than George Miller’s The Man from Snowy River. A foil is a character who serves as a contrast to another character. Writers often use foils to emphasize differences and traits of characters. Such an author would be William Shakespeare, author to many plays, including “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet”. William Shakespeare uses foiling to emphasize one of the main character’s traits and differences. This “ foiling” relationship is between the main character Romeo and Paris.
Dangerous Secrets in Tobias Wolff's Hunters in the Snow In Tobias Wolff's 'Hunters in the Snow', the three main characters each have secrets which they are concealing despite their friendships. These obscuring truths later cause trouble for each of the characters and will lead to their destruction. How will their decisions and lies impact their relationships?
Lily suffers from a lot of guilt concerning her role in her mom's death. She still seems to feel guilty. I predict that the image of her mother dying and knowing that she is the cause of death will haunt her. Even though it was an accident and the bullet was supposed to be aimed for her father. Lily will continue to blame herself and wonder how life would have been different if she had taken the right shot; if her mother was still alive.
1. Plays have foils to help the audience understand important characters in the play. Foils are minor characters that have similarities and differences with a more important character in the play. Sometimes the minor character is just there for the character to talk to; this is the basis for being a foil. In the play "Hamlet," [Titles] by William Shakespeare, the character Ophelia is a foil to Hamlet.
Throughout the play Hamlet, Ophelia is associated with floral imagery. Her father, Polonius presents her with a violet, she sings songs about flowers when she turns mad, she drowns amid garlands of flowers, and finally, at her burial, Queen Gertrude tosses flowers into her grave. Flowers symbolize her fragile beauty, blossoming sexuality, and a condemned innocence. Flowers are not deeply rooted. They are beautiful living things at the mercy of their surroundings. With no means of self-preservation, a flower's life relies on the natural forces around it. Ophelia's life mirrors this frail existence. She is entirely dependent upon the men in her life to make her choices. With no control over the storm brewing in her own life and no strength to withstand it, her shallow roots are ripped from under her. She loses her mind and takes her own young life.
Winter Dreams follows the life of Dexter Green as he pursues wealth and societal affluence in the hopes of winning the love and affection of Judy Jones, a spoiled socialite from a wealthy family who he first met when he was an adolescent while caddying at an exclusive golf club. As a result of this meeting and the embarrassment he felt in his role as a mere caddie; Dexter makes the irrational decision to quit his caddying job and begin his quest for upper-class social status. The author recapitulates this decision by the protagonist with the following statement; “It is not so simple as that either. As so frequently would be the case in the future, Dexter was unconsciously dictated to by his winter dreams.”
Random House Webster's dictionary defines a foil as "a person or thing that makes another seem better by contrast." This essay will focus on the use of the foil to contrast another character. The characters of Nora and Mrs. Linde provide an excellent example of this literary device. Mrs. Linde's aged, experienced personality is the perfect foil for Nora's childish nature. Mrs. Linde's hard life is used to contrast the frivolity and sheltered aspects of Nora's life. Nora's optimism and belief in things improbable is an opposite to the rationality and down-to-earth mentality of Mrs. Linde. Finally, the rekindling of the flame between Mrs. Linde and Krogstad is a direct contrast to the burning down of Nora and Torvald's "doll's house."

Perhaps she was standing on the edge of a cliff and either fell off (and was somehow rescued) or almost fell off. Perhaps the penguin attacked her and tried to kill her, although I don’t believe that that is a normal behavior for penguins. Perhaps the time required to take the photo resulted in her getting caught in a snowstorm, which are very bad in Antarctica as I understand it. These are all possible reasons for this statement, although I don’t know which one is accurate. To tell this story I will select my favorite: the attacking penguin.Rosemarie
The theme in both stories, “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “Winter Dreams” are very similar. The theme in both stories shows love and sacrifice. The wife describes how her husband's assumptions leads him to misjudge, patronize and dominate his wife. His wife does love him and sacrifices a lot for him. It seems like the wife has no say in the details of her life. In “Winter Dreams” Dexter falls for Judy. For many years he has dreams of her. We learned in the story about a period of time that Dexter rises to success. In the ending of the story Dexter cries mourning the past ans his lost of youth, which he will never be able to reclaim. Winter Dreams shows love and sacrifice. Both stories use the literary device, parenthesis. The stories show an
Garden, by Allison Pratt is a two-dimensional artwork that was created in 2015 using acrylic and joint compound on canvas. This work can be found in her studio in Jacksonville, Illinois. This work of art appears to be an abstract painting, but after further inspection, the depth of the subject and content gradually become clear. Pratt created Garden after losing her father in 2015, and if you look very closely at the middle of the painting, it spells out the word “love,” it is a beautiful personal expression of love and loss. Pratt used a substantial amount of color, lines, and texture which all tie it together to create a perfervid work of art.
The movie “Charly” by Ralph Nelson made in 1968 is inspired by the novel “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keys. The main characters are Charly , Alice, Dr.Straus, Dr.Nemur, and Miss Apple. In my opinion, I believe that the was a good movie because the way that all of the events followed.
The Color Purple depicts the struggle within the life of the female protagonist, Celie. Celie, a clear victim of abuse, narrates the story through a collection of writings that starts with her confession of “Dear God.” Celie’s story encompasses around her life and the characters that breaks the common gender depiction. The story heavily addresses the subject of social and behavioral standards for either men and women. It raises an issues on traditional marital subjects, family patriarchy, and social topics. In a traditional take of the family structure, the man often exhibits the dominant male figure head with the final say. The father provides the money and security for the wife and children as well as claim authority over the family. He becomes very work oriented and cares for the children only in times of need. On the other hand, the woman acts to be passive and pleases her husband. She plays a major role in raising and educating the children in every way possible. Often times, the woman takes a small part in maintaining a profession; although, she holds responsibility for all house work. The societal perspective of the patriarchal family system relies so heavily on gender roles that it becomes an expectation and the regulated norm. The Color Purple disrupts this gender norm by introducing characters that faces marital issues due to being the opposite of the typical gender role. Because they embody the opposite gender’s likely attributes, it becomes a questioning issue that leads to striving to live up to social norms or dealing with society disapproval. Within the progression of the novel, the women possess a sense of empowerment while as the men accept how things are in the world. The introducti...
For this assignment, I have decided to digitally illustrate the iconic scene from the film “Snow White”. This scene was when the twelve dwarfs had given Snow White her funeral and I decided to emphasise her death as feminine and extravagant with snowing falling down on her. I had decided to go with a Disney princess as it is completely different from the previous assignment in terms of the use of colour. I had use dark colours for the previous assignment, while in this one is a new approach I wanted to take with colours and also experimenting with texture when digitally painting. The creative choices that were to be made in this assignment was mostly with colour. At Snow White’s funeral she was placed in a clear glass casket whist being
While the woman sits weeping in her locked bedroom after hearing the news, Kate Chopin compared falling leaves on an autumn day to the tears and sorrow felt in the woman. As she began to smile and enjoy her freedoms, and think of all the new things she could do, Chopin spoke about the sun and warm air outside the window, to express the joy that was felt in the woman. As the woman went down the stairs after collecting her thoughts and emotions, her man walks through the door, where she then dies in an instant, comparing this to a breeze that sweeps over, such as the sorrow swept over her body causing her to fall
