Snow Falling on Cedars is about the murder of the fisherman Carl Heine. He was supposedly drowned, and a Japanese American named Kabuo Miyamoto is accused and put on trial for his murder. In most of the book they are in the court and mostly other characters are giving their point of view on the killing of Carl. Even though there was no evidence that Kabuo killed Carl, he was still framed for killing him. Kabuo was accused because he was Japanese and during this time everyone didn't like/ trust Japanese people due to what they did at Pearl Harbor. Kabuo was a Japanese American and during this time frame Americans didn't like the Japanese people due to the attack on Pearl Harbor and WW2 and most thought that they couldn’t be trusted. “Alibin Hooks reminds them, “... look into his eyes, consider his face, and ask yourselves what your duty is as citizens of this community.” (Gutterson, p. 415). People shouldn't judge someone just because they look different, have a different race, religion, or just because they live somewhere else. Kabuo was Japanese and because of that they were convinced it was him. They blamed everything on the Japanese people because of what happened at Pearl Harbor and what happened during WW2. Kabuo was blamed for the killing of Carl, who was a local American fisherman. Kabuo got blamed because he is Japanese and Americans probably wanted him killed since they thought he didn't belong in America. Similarly, the novel lots of times made similarities with To Kill a Mockingbird since most white people's opinions and thoughts were similar in both books, because blacks were trying to get their rights back since they were getting the blame on every single thing they did/ didn't do. Therefore, the white people were the Americans during the novel and the black were the Japanese
