Snap Inc. is a self-described camera company that is most widely known for the popular phone application Snapchat and its first venture into hardware with the Spectacles. Its mission is to enhance the way that people live and communicate with one another. To be able to accomplish this mission, Snap Inc. provides products that enable people to connect, learn and share in each other’s experiences. Their products also allow a diverse group of people from all around the world to freely express themselves. Snap Inc. seeks to redefine the role of the camera in society by embedding human and social value into a current technology that is widely available around the world. (Snap Inc., 2016). Discussion Snap is the newest example of a tech startup company that’s strategy seems to be one of long-term wealth creation. While revenue for the company has risen at a dramatic rate, so has its investment and spending leading to a non-profitable independent company securing a place among the most well-financed companies in the technology industry, like Google or Facebook. Snap uses almost all of its profit to finance research into future product innovation. Snap makes it clear, in its financial disclosures that they have “incurred operating losses in the past, expect to incur operating losses in the future, and may never achieve or maintain profitability” (NASDAQ.com, 2017). I believe this is the first sign that profits and short-term shareholder wealth creation is not at the forefront of its strategy.
