Research Proposal Kenneth Gutierrez Science Fair Proposal Smarty Gum Eeverman Joe C. Bean High School The main summary of my project Gum is nothing out of the ordinary in someone's daily lives. People chew gum during work,school,gym,church,even though they shouldn't! My project includes using gum as well as a math test to determine if chewing gum can help a person concentrate. I will compare the time it took to complete the math test while chewing gum and not chewing gum. Background People have been chewing gum for over centuries now during the Neolithic period, Ancient Greece where know to be the first in chewing a special type of gum following the Aztecs and Mayans. One of the forms these people would chew gum was from birch bark tar, people though there was a health benefit when chewing this tar. These people did not chew gum because of the amazing flavor but for cleansing their teeth. They thought if they would chew this tar their breath would not stink and their mouth would be cleaner. Nowadays we do chew gum for the amazing and thrilling taste. The first official gum was launched in the year 1848 by a man whose name was John B. The test will have problems of multiplication and division at least twenty problems will be in the sheet. This test will be timed and the two times will be compared and analysed. The person is not allowed to use a calculator but is allowed to use a pencil and paper to work out the problems by hand.
