The question of if college makes you smart or if smart people go to college has become a debated topic throughout the working class. Some people believe that you are smart before you make your decision to further your education after high school. Others say attending college in general is what makes you smart. Gathering different information brought me to the conclusion that people are indeed smart before attending college but make the decision to further that knowledge in the field they have chosen. Education can be defined as the “investment in skills”(Hoyle 1). Smart people make the decision to go to college to gain knowledge in a certain field through those very skills. People are more educated than ever before which can be related to …show more content…
The reasoning they gave was that many people flunk out of college so how can it make everyone smarter. Also they stated that some smart people choose not to go to college before they have better opportunities they can obtained without paying nearly forty thousand dollars a year. This idea can be supported through looking at many successful people in history who did not even finish high school such as Thomas Edison, Walt Disney and Albert Einstein. With that being said, people can be smart even without a high school education, therefore being smart before going to college. Another person stated how college enhances people’s own natural intelligence. They have this intelligence even without higher education and can become self-motivated to pursue personal growth. To do this people can take charge of their own education through reading, experience and relationships. People who have this knowledge and wisdom may take advantage of going to college and get a degree in the field they already have so much knowledge in.
In conclusion my finding and interviews lead my to the conclusion that smart people go to college but some smart people may choose not to. The evidence given proves how many people can be successful without higher education but go to college to be brought to their full
Does the amount of schooling measure a person’s intelligence level? The essay “Blue Collar Brilliance” written by Mike Rose, argue that the intelligent a person has should not be measure under the amount of schooling, using the example of his uncle, who did not get a formal education, become the head of general motor. As for this, Rose suggest that education should be taken as priority. I agree with Rose point of view because the one who get formal education do not symbolize success. In older generation, many people could not afford the tuition, however they can also succeed. In the other word, having formal education does not grantee us a successful future.
Through the various types of texts I went through, Mike Rose’s article on “Blue-Collar Brilliance” was the one that I felt I could personally relate to. I grew up in a family where manual labor was the key to a good income. Out of my entire family, I was the only one who graduated high school and went to college, therefore I grew up realizing that people didn’t necessarily need a college education to be considered “smart”. My father has been one of the smartest people in my family, I could explain my calculus homework to him and he would be able to quickly grasp all the equations and concepts, even though he dropped out of high school as a freshman in Mexico. In the fall of 2015, I decided to skip a semester of college to find job opportunities outside of the education field.
Charles Murray was able to pose and answer the question about whether or not too many people are going to college. In his essay,"Are Too Many People Going to College," he argues that most students should not be going to college to attain a bachelor 's degree when their skills and interests lie elsewhere (240). Murray 's argument on this topic is felt strongly by him, he believes that going to college is helpful for those who have the academic ability to absorb a college-level education, it is the appropriate thing to push a student in that direction since they are likely to gain wisdom (238). On the other hand, there are students in America that learn their core knowledge from kindergarten through eighth grade and are set for their future.
In the article “Are too many People Going to College” by Charles Murray a W. H. Brady Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, argues that our educational system needs improvement and that too many people are attending college. Some of Charles arguments on why too many people are attending college are obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree gives you a high paying job, college requires classes that are unnecessary, skill/talent may not need a degree and because they do not want to be labeled as dumb or lazy. Charles Murray makes a lot of good arguments on why too many people are going to college and I concur with his arguments.
Hence, a college education is not needed to obtain success. Menand’s ideology on reconstructing education to better fit a variety of people while simultaneously stating that college is not essential to succeed. This essay provides a great amount of information to not only convey his message, but to persuade his reader to follow his ideology on college. While Delbanco only states three reasons as to why a college education is needed. Though many Americans seem to follow a similar trend of attending a higher education after graduating from secondary there are many examples of successful people who never went to college. Both passages displayed that whether one decides to go to college or not, they must first decide what they wish to do in life.
Many people find the higher education a child receives, the higher the amount of money he or she will earn. Others find it is a waste of time and money to go to college after high school because of all the loans they would have to make up for after college. Many people have different point of views regards to the importance of college. In the articles Is College Worth It? and Why College Isn’t for Everyone, Leonhardt and Matthews have different opinions on the importance of college. Leonhardt argues that college is worth it because one who earns a college degree will be financially stable in the end, while Matthews believes that college isn’t for everyone because of the high-cost teenagers and adults will encounter when it comes to tuitions and fees.
While some say that college is a good investment due to its tendency to grow a student's character and intellectual ability, the downsides to college sorely outweigh the potential benefits that it has. While college does grow a student in multiple ways, “57% say that the higher education system in the United States fails to provide students with good value for the money they and their families spend.”(Doc F). This majority opinion demonstrates that the growth you can achieve in college is sorely outweighed by its economic cost, and not worth doing.
They go on to say, "While the average return to obtaining a college degree is clearly positive, we emphasize that it is not universally so. For certain schools, majors, occupations, and individuals, college may not be a smart investment." (page. 209 Para. 1). This applies more to older students rather than students who are fresh out of high school. One of the main reasons the return rate is greater is because most of these students who are already working need more education in order to further themselves in their workplace. The authors also add that "The main problem is one of selection: if the smartest, most motivated people are both more likely to go to college and more likely to be financially successful, then the observed difference in earning 's by years of education doesn 't measure the true effect of college." (Page 209, Para #2). This means students who do not take advantage of all that college has to offer are not really getting the full experience. Why not invest in four years and come out with the opportunity to make more money? Some students want to go ahead and get school out of the way. Furthering education accumulates lots of debt. Some student 's choose not to overwhelm themselves with those costly decisions; they want to get right to work. Owens and Sawhill provided enough information on how logical it is to attend
During high school, whether it is by a teacher, parent or classmate a student will be advised to go to college. “College is where you find yourself,” they will say. College is made to seem as the place where students will attain a brilliant education, thus making them feel as though once they are done with the schooling, a dependable job of high pay will appear for them. In our society, college is not a scarce option, but rather, an expectation. For many graduating high schoolers, college is the next step. Attaining a college degree is not necessary for creating a life for us as our civilization makes it out to be.
College education goes about the way to an effective future for people who are not kidding with it. Currently, a college education has turned in the base necessity in securing a job in different companies and although some people might think college is not worth the debt, in a long run it actually is.
It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated molds a better person, and creates happier people in the future and occasionally they become better in health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is pleasing for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can encourage someone to be more educated and happier. Reaching the point of happier and more educated is worth the cost.
College education essentially is the key to success in the future. It opens many doors of opportunity and allows us to explore every option available. College education can provide a student with new exciting opportunities that they would never had if they drop out of at high school. I would like to share some of the benefits that furthering your education can provide, and as well as the joy it can bring to each and every one of us.
With the global economy relying more than ever on brainpower and innovation rather than raw materials and manual labour as generators of wealth, a good education has become the key factor determining who will succeed and who will be left behind.
Rich people assume that College is important, but it is not a one way ticket to success, and happiness. However, Middle class people believe that education is important to be successful in the future. Education for middle class student is an important tool that is applied in the modern world to succeed, as it reduces the challenges, which are faced in life. “With nearly half of the nation 's undergraduates enrolled in community colleges,…….are playing an increasingly important role in higher education.”(David Hosansky). The information gained through education allows individuals’ future life to be optimally utilized due to training of the human mind. This eventually opens doors of opportunities for individual to achieve better chance in career growth. Education has played a major role in the modern industrial world. “This is attributed to the fact prospective employees must be qualified adequately to perform various tasks effectively.”(David Hosansky) Industries entail resources that are sufficiently equipped with the modern technology to suit the needs and wants of the society. This makes education to become a norm for services in all industrial
With, knowledge acquired from school, anyone’s mind will expand, to hold in all that was learned from the years of teaching. While in school, one can obtain a great personality, by having the need for friendship with people who have a common interest. Thus, a personality is formed and impacted by relationships and events that occur during school. Being taught information for so long, people tend to become more enlightened to multiple subjects. Then knowing multiple subjects, such as but not limited to geography, sociology, psychology, engineering, accounting, and philosophy. Education provides all of this. they would have to be relentless to reach the level of a doctorate, which essentially means a specialist in a specific field. When it comes to being able to execute any task, growing into a productive member of society, and success in one’s life, education will always be no matter what be beneficial and important.
