What many people suffer with deciding which one to choose is obvious – is it truly what it’s worth? Hulu and Netflix are commonly used as a much cheaper alternative to cable. Both services offer a low price of eight dollars a month, but Netflix does not have ads, so you won’t be interrupted during ever climax of your television show or movie. Netflix also has other package deals, for instance, instead of the unlimited streaming movies/episodes, you can have unlimited one-disc rentals at a time or twelve dollars for two discs at a time. If you want both unlimited disc’s and streaming its sixteen dollars, which is not much more money if you want newer movies or seasons.

Two of the top alternatives to satellite tv or basic cable are Netflix and Hulu. I have been a member of both online streaming services for the past four years. I have dedicated much of my free time and studying time to these two services. Both services have gained many subscribers and make the need for satellite tv almost obsolete. It would be hard for me to only have one of the services as they both are strong services in their own way,
To obtain this service, the subscriber has to buy a Tivo set top box and the Tivo service. The box is installed between the broadcast feed and the television set and is able to store up to 30seconds of live programs before sending to the TV. Although this introduces a delay in the signal, it ensures that the viewer is able to rewind and pause live TV, skip commercials, etc.
Imagine living in a world that did not cater to you. A world that did not approve of the types of relationships you had or desired; a world that only used you for the punchline of a joke or for taboo sex appeal; a world that would rather pretend that you do not exist. For members of the LGBT community, this is their reality. Television shows, movies, music, advertisements — all of these mediums are most assuredly intended for a heterosexual audience. True, there are handfuls of television shows that have queer characters, but it is very rare for these television shows to be on primetime television. Primetime television is the hotspot of all media. It is the time when all of America is watching, and the shows featured during these time-slots
The conflicts between State and Federal law are numerous, recently the high debate concerning marijuana has been seeing high interest. This case highlights a division not only in citizen perception, but also the actualized reality in the Criminal Justice system; where morality and discretion as well as State and Federal powers clash. In a recent Colorado case, Coats v. Dish Network, where an employee was terminated and later sued, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled against Coats. This recent ruling shows how far of a reach the Federal government can have when influencing laws onto States
INTRODUCTION Would people be willing to pay $12.50/month for commercial free radio beamed right to their car or home. Well two companies and many big investors are betting about $3 billion dollars that people are willing to do just that. In 1997, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) granted a portion of the S-band spectrum for satellite radio and two companies purchased use of these bands and started the only two companies competing in the satellite radio business today, namely Sirius and XM. Analysts like William Kidd of CE Unterberg Towpin, predict satellite radio will generate about $10 billion a year in revenues by 2007 (McClean, 2001).
§ Emerging competition from digital cable and satellite companies that offer movies on demand. Time Warner digital cable offers video on demand library consisting of a few hundred selections and growing. Users can purchase a movie with the touch of a button for about $4.00. Customers have access to the movie for up to 24hours. Many video on demand services are now offering technologies that allow users to pause, fast forward and rewind the movies they purchase. Though the selection offered by cable companies is extremely small in comparison to Netflix, it will only be a matter of time before the number of selections will increase drastically.
Netflix utilizes a number of different advertising methods. Netflix created a coupon in the form of an enlarged movie ticket offering a free month of service. These “movie tickets” are given out at cash registers at all Best Buy stores and are included in packing boxes of most of the major DVD player manufacturers (Sony, Philips, Toshiba, Panasonic, RCA, etc.). Best Buy’s website also has a link directly to Netflix which is under the “DVD rental service” drop down menu. Each DVD mailer sleeve from Netflix includes a tear off “tell a friend” certificate with a promotion code that provides the bearer with a free month of service. At one time, Netflix sold banner ads on their websites. However, they abandoned this strategy after three months because the revenue stream was not sufficient to cover the cost of maintaining the ads. Netflix also has an aggressive affiliate program. The affiliate program encourages other websites to provide links to Netflix and offers a referral fee for linked new members at a range of $9-$12 per member. This fee is dependent upon the number of referrals provided in a month. If a site is successful at delivering greater than 200 new customers in a month, the referral fee is negotiable, up to $30 per new customer. Netflix is a straightforward company. It rents DVDs via the Internet and sends them to you through the U.S. Postal Service. For a flat fee of $19.95 a month, you can build a list of movies at the Netflix.com Web site that you want sent to your home. The company sends you the first three along with prepaid return envelopes. When you're ready to send them back, you put them in the return envelopes and drop them into any mailbox. The minute the return is processed, the next one, two, or three DVDs are on their way. Depending on where you live, the turnaround time is two to five days.
The interesting thing about these competitors is that they are all licensees of WEB TV. They are also scrambling to find that ultimate next generation item that duplicates WEB TV and more. These companies are trying to gain market share in the alternate and substitute products. For instance Philips is a leading manufacturer of digital TV and if they could align with a cable company around an ISP then they will compete against their own WEB TV.
1) Netflix’s currently does not have a user-friendly method for customers to stream videos onto television sets. Netflix is entering agreements with the manufacturers of game systems, Blu-ray disc players, and televisions to include software capable of streaming Netflix videos. 2) There is strong competition with other companies that offer video streaming at no extra charge. Additionally, Netflix and its competitors are attempting to enter the digital world.
In this ever changing world it only makes since that the television is once again moving into a new and innovative realm of possibilities. With the invention of the Smart TV the art of watching TV has taken on a whole new meaning.
