Slide 3: I liked slide 3 a lot because I really liked the graphic organizer you used and how you clarified each reason for assessment. I think it is important to know exactly why you are assessing a child because you don't want to waste time assessing if it isn't necessary. I think it's important for the teacher to start the assessment on the child as early as possible, if needed, because it is important to get children the help they need as soon as possible, if it is needed.
Slide 4: I found this slide to be very important because I think it is so important to screen infants and children. I was born with abnormal mitral valve in my heart, and the doctors did not find out about it until I was 16 years old. My heart had grown abnormally

It is important to know how the child is doing, so that effective plans can be made for the future. If a child isn't learning very much, then the professional that the child is working with wouldn't want to go at a fast pace. The plan should be balanced to fit the child's needs.
Slide 9: I really liked reading slide 9 because I think it is important to have teams of professionals and family members working together to help the child. I found the information about the girl in your practicum classroom interesting. I've never known a child with this kind of delay, and I bet it's very difficult to work with her, but I think that's great that she has her own special team to work with her through her delay.
Slide 11: I think slide 11 is important because it is important to know the advantages and disadvantages of a test before administering it. I like the fact that this test can be taken in a short time and that it has reliable and valid information, but I don't like that it has to be taken in an unfamiliar place and that it is often bias against children with disabilities and delays. I think the disadvantages may outweigh the advantages when it comes to this
Nyla was a student that took a lot of work and effort that would make her successful. Although she did have some limitations such as her communication and transportation, Kissinger made it possible for her to be a special part in the classroom. The students in this school room then grew respect for Nyla and had an open mind of always looking out for others. This story of Holding Nyla was a story that had touched my heart. This is an exact model of what I want to strive for in my future classroom. The main lesson I got from this text was not to focus on the child’s disability and limitations as a student, but utilize the student and as one could see, that had a great impact among her peers and overall environment of the classroom. By the end of this transforming story, Nyla was not the only one feeling praise and importance in this classroom, or not feeling underestimated by her disability, but every child that was in that room felt that as
I read the Syllabus very carefully, as requested, and I do not have any questions. The topic I choose to do a web field trip on to search and return with one fact is “Specific Populations to assess: developmentally challenged”. I am using information from APA.org, which is where I found the one fact that was requested for this assignment. What I found was a set of guidelines for the treatment and assessment of people with disabilities that were developed by a task force of APA specialists. I am using the section “Testing and Assessment” which includes Guidelines 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 (APA Task Force, 2017) I found the fact that I am going to share under Guideline 15 which is “Psychologists strive to determine whether accommodations are appropriate for clients to yield a valid test score” (APA Task Force, 2017, Guideline 15).

Some of the most important, but not necessarily most discussed, things parents should look into can turn out to be how successful their child was in preschool. The location of a preschool can affect whether or not a student or the students parents feel safe about them being there. The curriculum can be the deciding factor when it comes to what the student is going to leave preschool knowing new things or having the same mentality as before. The teachers that are watching over and teaching young children are also very important. Some teachers are much more qualified to work with preschoolers than others. These factors should most likely be looked at thoroughly before parents decide their children’s future.

The third child looked at was Sarah who has a learning disability that wasn 't diagnosed until she was in fifth grade due to her ability to compensate for her disability in the previous grades. The goal of education is to provide children with the opportunity to amass a wealth of knowledge, love for learning, and academic strength. Children go to school to read, write, and learn a variety of subjects. While education is meant to be exciting for children, there have to be standards in order to make sure that progress is being and those children are where they need to be in order to move onto the next phase of their education. Education builds as it grows, and students need a strong foundation in order to succeed and continue. Without those strong building blocks, students will continue to fall back and repeat the same material again and again. And so, testing and assessment come into play to make sure children are where they need to be. However, in early childhood settings testing is almost non-existent because of the stigma around testing. The current debate in our education system argues that testing is not a good measure of a child’s actual knowledge. Rather, assessment gives teachers a better picture of a student’s abilities and capabilities in the classroom. Thus, currently the debate continues over assessment versus testing in the classroom due to the demand for knowledge on whether or not testing is a good way of measuring a student’s progress in school.
Observation is important as the practitioner can find out what the child is interested in and what motivates them to learn alongside their progress and how they behave in certain situations, additionally at the same time it identifies if children need assistance within certain areas of learning or socially (DCSF, 2008). Furthermore the observations check that the child is safe, contented, healthy and developing normally within the classroom or early years setting, over time the observations can be given to parents as they show a record of progress which helps to settle the parent and feel more comfortable about their child’s education. Observations are not only constructive within learning about an individual child, they can be used to see how different groups of children behave in the same situation and how adults communicate and deal with children’s behaviour (Meggitt and Walker, 2004). Overall observations should always look at the positives of what children can complete within education and not look at the negatives and all observations should become a fundamental part of all practitioners work alongside reflection (Smidt, 2009).
It is important that teachers give children a fair chance to show their knowledge when assessing. “The purpose of assessment is to provide feedback that can be used to improve student performance” ( Orange 2000). Teachers assess children to ensure that they are understanding the material, and to make sure they are learning. For young children especially tests should never be the only criteria of assessment. Instructors should always make sure that their assessment is fair. When testing a child, make sure that the testing method used is appropriate for that child. For example, if giving a test that relies on visual aids to administer the test it is important that the teacher is certain that all the children have good enough vision to clearly see the aids.
It’s very important for parents to plan early to ensure their children turn out well. In the beginning, parents should have experience in raising children because they are the future of our world. I completely agree that taking care of children is one of the greatest and hardest jobs in society. Children need a lot of attention to help them learn how to deal with life. Also, parents have to show their children how to be behaving and what is the best to do in certain situations. Due to this, when teachers are not provided with suitable assessments from their textbooks or instructional resources, teachers construct their own in an unsystematic manner. As I reflect on my past assessment process, I realized how much my assessments have changed over the years. In my early years, I used tests for informational recall as my assessments. I felt these were appropriate guidelines in which I needed to follow in order to substantiate a student’s grade. Every assignment or tests was given a point value and then based on the amount of points, a grade was given. Every student’s assessment was exactly the same, and the assessments did not contain any subjectivity. I felt confident in giving the grade based on a valid point system. However reflecting back, I see that I did not include any performance-based assessments or individual learning styles in my early assessment. I also did not take into consideration the individual needs of my students. My assessment approach was awful. I am embarrassed that I use to assess students in this manner.
