The Hidden Story of Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent
A love story is a genre of popular fiction in which characters fall in love. Although, the basis of Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent are love stories, there are more important themes to these stories than the romance portrayed in these fairytales, which Disney touches on, but Robert Stromberg brings more emphasis to; evil from different perspectives, the act of rape, and the theory that love conquers all.
In Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent is the typical evil character like in all the other Disney films, but in Stromberg’s version, it shows how evil arises in different characters throughout the film including Maleficent. In the original movie, Maleficent calls herself “Mistress of all Evil”, which

Stefan is technically the evil one since he betrays Maleficent’s trust and cuts her wings off of her for the current king, so when he passes, he can become king. It could be argued that Stefan is toying with Maleficent ever since he met her. Even though his intention when he is young might not have been to deceive her, he always wanted to live in the castle; in other words, he always wanted power. This angers Maleficent. She wants revenge. In this situation that reaction is normal, but she takes it a little too far and takes her anger out on a baby. She curses his daughter into a deep sleep where only true love 's kiss can awaken her. Even though this is an evil deed, in Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent curse is much harsher. As years pass, Stefan darkens by the paranoia and vengeance while Maleficent watches over the child as she grows up living with three fairies in the forest. Overtime, she finds herself to care for Aurora and tries to …show more content…
However, in the Disney film it targets the audience of children; therefore, the directors hide the true meaning even deeper so it won’t scare them and isn’t so obvious. In Sleeping Beauty, Aurora is kissed while unconscious by prince Philip, who is basically still a stranger to her, but this is seen as a romantic gesture to the audience. As for in Maleficent, the moral of rape stands out more when Stepfan cuts off her wings after first putting her in a drug-like state. In this movie, Maleficent’s wings symbolize her power and strength. So when Stefan takes them, he also takes her power and her trust. From this movie, it is arguable that since in Sleeping Beauty Maleficent doesn’t have wings at all and she is completely evil, that the wings are a sense of good self power rather than an empowerment over anyone around her. So when her wings get cut off, it cuts off the good in her and turns into vengefulness. After years, she gets over what Stefan has done and reclaims her power internally. In a way, Aurora helps Maleficent overcome what has happened to her by having a loving bond between them so it healed her heart. Although Aurora and Maleficent are not literally raped, that is the backstory of these two
Because the pointed cape implies motion, Maleficent looks as if she is ready to pounce on Sleeping Beauty or grab her immediately after she touches the spindle. It shows that Maleficent is in suspense and on the edge of her feet waiting for Sleeping Beauty to touch the spindle.
True love is the love that everyone fantasizes about. It is the love that is unconditional and everlasting. Love is very hard to define since everybody's concept of love is different. However, in order to achieve a good relationship, people must have a well balanced power structure in their relationship, and good understanding and communication between them. In the stories, "The Yellow Wallpaper,'; "Hills Like White Elephants,'; and "A Doll's House,'; one could see the lopsided relationship between the males and females. In these stories the males predominates the females, and the characters seem to lack understanding, and communication toward another, which causes problems in their relationships.
Fable —A deliberately false or improbable account, well, so says Merriam-Webster. Can a love story be a fable? Sure thing —not only did Roberto Benigni’s Life is Beautiful does not just fall into one genre, but into many. The remarkable film can be considered as a romantic comedy, a drama, but most of all, a fable—The story of a man, winning the heart of his “princess” and his own son.
While Catherine Breillat’s “Sleeping Beauty” does stay true to the original Brother’s Grimm tale in its archetype, she does stray from the original version in many ways in order to convey a message. In comparison to her film “Bluebeard”, “Sleeping Beauty” was much more explicit, with graphic sexual scenes. Additionally, this tale is different in that the main character is not the dainty frail princess we usually see in classic fairytales, but a tomboy who wants to referred to as “Vladmir” and has sexual encounters with another woman. Breillat contrasts the lesbian sex scene where Anastasia is laughing and enjoying herself with her having sex with Peter where she cries throughout it and puts her face down in a pillow after it is done.
Fairytales, the short stories that most children heard as they went to bed, are actually folktales from previous decades. The fairytales today are primarily adaptations of older versions recreated by Disney— the pioneers of this generation. With that said, the modern versions consistently display good triumphing over evil, a prince charming that constantly came to the rescue, and a happily ever after ending. However, the original folktale version didn’t always come with fortunate events, but often were more violent and gruesome. With the fairytale Cinderella, Disney maintains a similar theme as its Grimm version; however, the conflicts, events, and characters that support this idea are rather different.
What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. It is a story that explores all
In Disney’s 2014 production Maleficent, a beautiful fairy falls in what she thinks is love with a human boy. On her sixteenth birthday he gave what he called “true love’s first kiss”, and Stefan's ambition got in the way of him and her having a relationship together. Stefan being a human fell in the ways of the normal, and carried on with not visiting Maleficent in the moors, Maleficent grew angry and confused more and more each day. Some people can argue that Maleficent is an evil person, or even a good character. In this particular film Maleficent is both. All though she did many villainous things, her heroic things outweigh her villainous things.
William Shakespeare, a creative literary artist, impacted his audience with the essence of love. Based on his play, A Midsummer Nights Dream, Lysander a main character explicitly states, "The course of love never runs smooth," expressing an opinion easily relatable to the modern generation. The story of an hour, written by Kate Chopin, is another literary work that easily expresses the same theme. With this in mind, both works revolve around the aspect of love and it's challenges that some May or may not overcome. Love is much more than an emotion, it's another world, another life that overcomes oneself into something unknown.
The Chronicles of Narnia are veritably the most popular writings of C.S. Lewis. They are known as children’s fantasy literature, and have found favor in older students and adults alike, even many Christian theologians enjoy these stories from Lewis; for there are many spiritual truths that one can gleam from them, if familiar with the Bible. However, having said this, it is noteworthy to say that Lewis did not scribe these Chronicles for allegorical didactics of the Christian faith, but wrote them in such a well-knit fashion that young readers might understand Christian doctrine through captivating fantasy and thus gain an appreciation for it. With this in mind, and in the interest of this assignment, the purpose of this paper is an attempt to analyze one of the many doctrines of the Christian faith from The Lion, The Witch, And, The Wardrobe (LWW), namely, temptation and how Lewis illustrates it through an individual character, Edmund.
There were both male and female fairies, some good and others evil. Evil female fairies were usually associated with female sexuality and abused their magical powers by doing harm (Rose 107-9).
Over centuries, fairy tales were passed down by word of mouth to portray a story with a hidden meaning. As these fairy tales were passed on they traveled to different destinations and were modified to conform to other cultures. One example of this is the story of Grapnel. Most people are familiar with the Brothers Grimm version of Rapunzel; however, an earlier variant that comes from Italy was the forerunner to the Grimm version. The Italian version, Petrosinella, written by Giambattista Basile, is an example of how culture has an influence on literature. Although this is the case, both fairy tale versions portray jungian archetypes that are often misinterpreted by mainstream portrayals of these fairy tales.
boggling, are now much more tame than her acts of power in Sleeping Beauty, which revolve around death and destruction. In Maleficent, her acts of power seem to revolve around protection rather than on offensive attacks.
"It was not once upon a time, but in a certain time in history, before anyone knew what was happening, Walt Disney cast a spell on the fairy tale. He did not use a magic wand or demonic powers. On the contrary, Disney employed the most up-to-date technological means and used his own American "grit" and ingenuity to appropriate European fairy tales. His technical skills and ideological proclivities were so consummate that his signature obfuscated the names of Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Collodi. If children or adults think of the great classical fairy tales today, be it Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Cinderella, they will think Walt Disney. "
...need to be saved because they can save themselves. The film also shows that true love comes in many different forms and is not only referred to in romantic situations. Walt Disney must be rolling in his grave. It is surprising how shocking this new storyline is to people who are familiar with Disney and its characters. The stories are originated from Germany and the Brothers Grimm and they have also tried making stronger female characters. Children are impressionable and it is important to make sure that what they are viewing has a positive impact on them in the future. Germany and the U.S. are not the only countries guilty of stereotyping women in fairy tales but they have such vast brand names that it is hard to ignore. Disney and The Brothers Grimm fairy tales are different in content, but share the same uncharitable views of women and societies image of a hero.
In today 's society, it is normal for young children to believe in fairytales. These fairytales are normally seen throughout books and movies but also through parents reading them as bedtime stories. These tales in our society have unrecognized hidden guidelines for ethics and behaviors that we provide for children. One such children 's story is Disney’s Cinderella, this film seems to be a simple tale of a young woman whose wishes work out as to be expected. This tale reflects the expectations of women 's actions and beliefs of a proper women.
