Sleep Paralysis Is Often Perceived As Demonic Attacks Sleep paralysis is characterized by the body and musculature being rendered completely immobile as a result of REM (rapid-eye movement) atonia. During this REM stage, people may experience dream-like images and perceptions. A common entity that people perceive is something similar to a demonic entity. People who suffer from sleep paralysis feel trapped, they are unable to scream or move their body while seeing a demonic entity as they are unconscious or semiconscious (Mental Health Daily). The main subtypes of demonic hallucinations are demonic intruders, the incubus, and odd demonic sensations.

The discovery of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep suggested that sleep was not, as it was thought to be, a dormant state but rather a mentally dynamic one. Your brain is, in fact, very active in this state, almost to the level at which it is when a person is awake. Yet during this active stage in which most dreams occur, the movements of the rest of the body are completely stilled. To imagine this paralysis during dreams not occurring is a frightful image, since in many cases dreams are violent and active. When the neurotransmitters that control the movement of the body do not work properly the person develops REM sleep behavioral disorder (RBD).
There are three forms of sleep paralysis. Ramsawh (2005) found that when it occurs in non-narcoleptic individuals it is known to as isolated sleep paralysis (ISP). Another form is referred to as familial sleep paralysis, in which it is similar to ISP, but genetically transmitted (Levitt, 2009). The final form of sleep paralysis is narcoleptic sleep paralysis, which occurs as a symptom of Narcolepsy (Levitt, 2009). Isolated sleep paralysis episodes are characteristic with “infrequent attacks and a negative family history”, and familial sleep paralysis with “more frequent attacks and a positive family history” (Powell, 1998, p. 239). Each form of sleep paralysis is unique and different in the causes and symptoms they possess.
Arousal disorders are the most common type of parasomnia. These disorders include: confusional arousals, sleepwalking, sleep terrors and nightmares. Experts believe that each is related and share some symptoms. Essentially, they occur because a person is in a mixed state of being both asleep and awake, generally coming from the deepest stage of non-dreaming sleep. The individual is awake enough to act out complex behaviors, but asleep enough not to be aware of or remember them.
On a regular basis I don’t typically remember my dreams or even try to remember them. Keeping a sleep journal was a very hard thing for me to do. It was also difficult to know in what specific stage I was in during different times throughout the night. I can’t say for sure the amount of time I spent in each stage either. I can say that I could barely hear my alarm about two hours into the night, so I consider that to be REM because normally I hear my alarm just fine in the morning.

Sleep paralysis is a condition that occurs at either the onset or upon awakening of sleep. The medical terms for the two forms of sleep paralysis are hypnogogic and hypnopompic (1). When a person falls asleep, the body secretes hormones that relax certain muscles within the body, causing it to go into paralysis. Doing this prevents the body from acting out a person's dream, which could result in an injury. Sleep paralysis generally runs within one's family or in those who suffer from narcolepsy (2), but there is currently no explanation for why some people get it while others do not.

What is Epilepsy? Epilepsy is a CNS issue where the brain waves become abnormal and can cause seizures or unusual behavior and sometimes even loss of awareness. Anyone can develop Epilepsy and it can affect females and males of any race and age. They symptoms of a seizure are different for everyone. Some people repeatedly unvoluntarily move their arms and legs while some simply just stare ahead for a few seconds. Having just one seizure doesn’t always mean you have Epilepsy. You must have at least two seizures to be diagnosed with Epilepsy.
Although it does not affect everyone, it does occur. Those of us who suffer from it are living proof of that. Some try to pass it off as mere hallucination and do not believe in it because it is not commonly discussed or well-known. In researching sleep paralysis, I feel that even those who do know about it and have written about it do not validate the emotional injury that suffering from this condition brings upon a person. Many web pages would state that sleep paralysis was not harmful to a person physically -which is true, but they rarely made any mention of the anxiety and fear and loss of control that is experienced when a person goes through it. There was only one page that actually offered suggestions as to what a person can do to calm down when waking up in paralysis. It is easy enough to say, "Take deep breaths and concentrate on trying to move one small body part" when a person is awake, but it is totally different to try to do that when you are in the middle of a full-blown
