College students are notorious for not getting enough sleep. A college education is a great privilege, but it requires a lot of discipline and hard work. Many college students often forgo sleep to stay up late into the night to study or do homework, wanting to use every minute of time that they have to cram information into their minds before their exams. Staying awake into the late hours of the night to study for exams and work on assignments might not be as helpful as many college students think, recent research suggests. New observations and studies on sleep show that it might be more effective to get a good night’s sleep before an exam rather than stay up all night studying for it. Better sleep habits could help college students to do well in school by improving physical health, mental health, and memory retention.

While the conclusions of these tests are not likely definitive and applicable to all people, they do suggest that the sleep and study habits of many college students may be counter-productive to the goal that they are trying to achieve. It is common for college to stay up for most or all of the night to study for a test. While it would seem that as a college student stares at the information he or she is supposed to know for many hours would be much more helpful than going to sleep. A student can’t take any information in while he sleeps, so why waste the time? Research suggests that sleep is by no means wasted time. It may benefit a student to plan for sleep; to get as much work and studying as he or she can during the day to ensure a good bed-time. Granted, this is not always possible, but it is certainly better to avoid chronic sleep-deprivation and get sufficient sleep on the nights when it is
