All throughout history slavery has been an inevitable fatality, in worsting the society as a whole. Slavery is not only harsh for the slave, but as well as the slave owner. The culture is affected in many ways, morally, socially, and economically. Frederick Douglass's novel, The narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass an American slave, is a prime example of slavery and all its effects on not only slaves but slave owners. First and foremost, slavery was assumed to be moral by some of society, however, this was not true, its was far from moral for anyone. Children were raised to see slavery as good, and moral, nevertheless, this was just in the hands of the man to do so, if they were born to see slavery, then it was thought to be correct. “Nothing has been left undone to cripple their intellects, darken their minds, debase their moral nature, obliterate all traces of their relationship to mankind” (Douglass preface). This statement is one of the best to describe the views certain parts of society had towards slavery. Even though its thought slave owners had the world in their hands, not everyone of them liked what they had to do, they felt it was immoral but did nothing as to not be shunned. There is not much that can't be said about how many people who thought of slavery as bad and did nothing about it, because society believe it to be good. There are has one could say, two sides to every argument and sometimes both wanting the same thing in different ways. “...my master found religious sanction for his cruelty” (Douglass 33). A few of slave owners found anything they could to justify their actions such as the bible, or just the fact others parts of society did it as well.
