In, “Skinny Love,” Bon Iver employs powerful imagery and disappointed allusions to convey the idea that impure love becomes a vicious cycle of misery. Vernon’s use of allusions clearly show how impure love is destructive. The repetition of the word “my” in the song (Vernon, lines 3, 7, and 19) exemplifies the disappointment and hurt of the speaker. It is as if the speaker doesn’t know what to say to demonstrate how wounded he is from the relationship he was involved in. The speaker also writes about why his relationship failed. The speaker references the biblical verse “love is patient, love is kind” (1 Corinthians 13:4) when the speaker wrote “I told you to be patient....” (Vernon, lines 9-12). The speaker reveals everything his relationship …show more content…
“Suckle on the hope in light brassieres,” (Vernon, line ) was written to show what was wrong with the relationship. It refers to sex and how the relationship was mainly built off sex. “Light brassieres” refers to the idea of sex, as brassiere is another word for bra. The speaker writes that hope is in the light brassieres, or in other words, physically connection was the only hope left in the relationship. “I’m breaking at the britches and at the end of all your lines,” (Vernon, line ) show that while the speaker is broken up about the termination of the relationship that caused him so much anguish, the speaker is happy to be liberated from the endless cycle of pain the relationship supplied him with. The end of the lines is referring to the binding that held the speaker in the relationship and “I’m breaking at the britches” is referring to the emotion damage the break up and the relationship in itself caused the speaker. The imagery of,“staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer,” (Vernon, line 4) holds a dark connotation. The word blood sparks makes reader think of hurt and pain, while crushed veneer makes the reader think of anger. Blood is associated with injury. In this song, blood is referencing wounds from an impure relationship. The verb “crushed” is associated with anger and/or violence. This shows that the thought of the speaker’s wicked relationship brings about a feeling
Geek Love, by Katherine Dunn, is a fictional work of art that trails the life of Olympia Binewski, a hunchbacked albino dwarf, from her creation to her death. Her parents Aloysius "Al" Binewski and his wife, the geek "Crystal" Lil, decide to ‘breed’ their own freak show, questioning: “What Greater gift could you offer your children than an inherent ability to earn a living just by being themselves?”(Dunn, 18). Most of the action takes place at the Binewski’s Fabulon, a traveling circus, where Oly along with her siblings Arturo, a flipper, aqua boy, Electra “Elly” and Iphigenia “Iphy”, the Siamese twins, and Fortunato, Chick the norm looking child with telekinetic powers get to evolve. The role each freak kid takes in the Fabulon changes, grows, some having their own ‘shows’ or cults, Arty becoming the new leader of the Fabulon. Soon what used to be the love,
“Terminal Avenue” versus “We So Seldom Look on Love” Eden Robinson’s “Terminal Avenue” was published in the anthology or collection of fictional short stories called “So Long Been Dreaming” in 2004. Bose “Terminal Avenue” is a futuristic dystopian short story about a young aboriginal man named Wil, who is torn between his aboriginal community whose traditions are being punished for by the police and or being punished by his family if he becomes a peace officer to survive the adjustment. Barbara Gowdy’s “We So Seldom Look at Love” is a collection of fictional short stories and was published in 1992. (Broadview Press) “We So Seldom Look on Love” collections include a short story about a young woman that lives the life of necrophilia who grew up in a moderately normal childhood until the age of thirteen. Where one day she finds a forceful energy she gets from when life turns into death, and continues to experiment with dead animals and cadavers.
MacClancy states, “Wrenched out of normal routines by the continuing assault on their mouths, they concentrate on the sensation and ignore almost everything else” (287-288). On the topic of body art, Ruggia states, “The skinny obsession is spiraling out of control as more people risk death to be thin through diet pills and gastric bypass surgery” (318). These statements support that the essays both unveil an underlying message of the endless human search for self-gratification. Using diferent writing styles, the authors similarly impress their person opinion on the
Prompt #3: “Most often, literary works have both internal conflict (individual v. self) and external conflict (individual v. individual, society, nature, or technology)”.
This contrast becomes clear when the speaker compares his addiction to alcohol he once had, to the addiction of this person’s love. Stapleton says, “liquor was the only love I’d known but you rescued me from reachin’ for the bottom” to illuminate this concept. Love is strong enough to replace the addiction of alcohol for the speaker. Another comparative parallel that comes to light is “but when you poured out your heart I didn’t waste it ‘cause there’s nothing like your love to get me high”. The effect of the juxtaposition shows how love is powerful and irresistible enough for sacrifice of another

The meaning of life and the true meaning of happiness can be pin-pointed simply by: Grow up. Get married. Have children. These three ending sentences form the basis of the main argument in “About Love”, an excerpt from “What Our Mothers Didn’t Tell Us: Why Happiness Eludes the Modern Woman” by Danielle Crittenden. Crittenden does not limit the use of her emotional appeal to repeated use of terms like “love”, “friendship” and “independence”. One of the strongest qualities supporting the thesis of “About Love” is Crittenden’s ability to use both connotative and denotative language. Crittenden goes on to say “Too often, autonomy is merely the excuse of someone who is so fearful, so weak, that he or she can’t bear to take
...ck” proves this, since it is short yet compelling (193). The choice of the phrase ‘too thick” suggests that Paul D opposes Sethe’s excessive love, which is supported in Morrison’s uses of the theme love. This universal theme allows readers to connect with the characters and comprehend Morrison’s message that love is destructive. Paul D knows this, and attempts to suppress his feelings in a metaphorical tobacco tin heart. This metaphor uses imagery to help the reader understand Paul D’s beliefs and emotional state. Yet Paul D is unable to suppress his feelings entirely, and eventually opens his heart to love. Morrison crafts her argument through the use of a short statement with powerful structure and word choice, the theme of love, and a metaphor for Paul D’s heart, working together to prove that love is dangerous, consuming, and necessary to the human condition.

Still even more evidence of these mixed feelings is illustrated in the third stanza. "This love dance, a kind of blood rite between father and son, shows suppressed terror combined with awe-inspired dependency" (Balakian 62). "The hand that held my wrist/was battered on one knuckle;/ At every step you missed/ My right ear scraped a buckle"(Roethke 668). The speaker's father's hand being "battered on one knuckle" is indicative of a man who...
To begin, the episodic shifts in scenes in this ballad enhance the speaker’s emotional confusion. Almost every stanza has its own time and place in the speaker’s memory, which sparks different emotions with each. For example, the first stanza is her memory of herself at her house and it has a mocking, carefree mood. She says, “I cut my lungs with laughter,” meaning that...

It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres….

“Love Is Not All: It Is Not Meat Nor Drink” largely avoids passion in the speaker’s relationship; nevertheless, passion and logic struggle in coming in terms with love here. In the logic driven octave, passion can been noticed in physical metaphors and repetition in the section; accordingly, they allude to sexual love and passion. For instance, the speakers metaphorical situation utilizes phrases that favor sexual situations, like “pinned down” and “moaning for release” (10). Adding to a sexual situation, repetition of the “rise and sink” may mean to reference intercourse (4). The speaker’s relationship can be reasonably be assumed to involve sexual activities, thusly the speaker’s passion for their partner may be only be sexual.
Eavan Boland’s poem “Love” comes from her collection entitled In a Time of Violence. In the piece Boland both reflects on the history of her and her husband’s love and ties it in with the story of a hero who travels to hell. The poem’s form is stanzaic, broken into 7 stanzas with 38 lines. “Love” is rich with metaphor, simile, personification and imagery. The poem makes constant allusion to Greek Mythology, and the author’s story runs parallel to that of Odysseus from Homer’s “The Odyssey” . Boland is able to convey the journey loves take throughout the course of a relationship and how it is affected during difficult times.
