In my mind, I have always associated freedom with adventures: mostly with outdoor adventures. I feel the most free by doing the thing I love the most: skiing. I live for those perfect powder days, filled with sunshine and joy. The days when you’re the first one at the top of the chairlift, and what you see in front of you is breathtaking: everything is covered in snow, sparkling from the sunlight. Then your skis dive into deep, fresh snow and you get to make the first turns down the mountain, leaving fresh tracks behind you. You feel like you have everything under control, but you’re pushing yourself to the limits at the same time, trying to go as fast as you can. All your problems disappear, and at that moment, the whole world just makes sense. You feel free. …show more content…
I realized that I can feel just as free, if not even more, by just lying in my bed. I never thought about it that way, but reading can offer you all magnitudes of freedom. You can be whoever you want to be and wherever you want to be. There are no limits when it comes to reading. All you need is a little bit of imagination, and you can be walking down the streets in Paris, or flying over London on your flying broom. Growing up, we had one television in our house, and most of the time my older brother would take control of the remote. After I would argue with him and lose, I would have no choice but to go in my room and read. I preferred reading over watching movies anyway, I just wanted to give my brother a good fight. I liked reading better because I had the power to choose what the scenery and characters looked like. If they turn one of my favorite books into a movie, I am usually disappointed because it is never the way I imagined
The sport of mountain biking is one of the best active sports you can do for a number of fitness reasons and depending on what style of mountain biking you partake in, it can be also a great deal of fun as well as keeping you fit at the same time. People are usually unaware of how may muscles you use when riding a mountain bike, and how quickly you can burn calories off riding a bike as it can be an extremely good work out for the body. If you plan on riding cross-country along different styles of trails, riding a bike can be quite a task. So if you riding over a vast distance up and down hills, along slippery single trail it can be very exhausting on the legs and the lower back.
Imagine being on the top of the world, on a bitter cold mountain, over top of an enormous crowd. Below where you stand, the lustrous lights are shining on a massive jump, that seems larger than the mountain itself, created for the professional snowboard competition. This gargantuan jump will decide whether you win or lose the competition. Becoming a professional snowboarder has been a dream to me ever since I first was beginning to snowboard. Being on top of the enormous slope and strapping into my bindings instantly made me relaxed and put a grin larger than the slope itself on my face. Everytime I glide down the face of the mountain I become focused and dialed in on my riding. When becoming a professional snowboarder as an occupation, I would
Christopher McCandless’ long, fascinating, but an ultimately fatal journey into the wilderness of Alaska is depicted in the biography, Into the Wild, written by Jon Krakauer. Late in the of summer of 1990, a very young Christopher McCandless left his ordinary world in Annandale, Virginia to pursue a solitary life in the untamed wilds of Alaska. Many will insinuate that Christopher McCandless’ actions were childish and idiotic, but a stronger argument would be that his unconventional thinking and desire to live life on his own terms allowed him to reach self-actualization.
A few winters ago, some friends invited my family and me to go snow skiing at Paoli Peaks, Indiana. I did not know how to snow ski, and I leaped at the thought of trying this new sport. On the first morning we entered the pro shop to rent all the gear and make decisions about whether or not to take lessons or go it alone. We decided to be adventurous and go it alone—no lessons. Kent and Celeste, the friends who invited us, knew how to ski and snowboard. He assured us that he could show us the basics, and we would be on our way down the slopes. All of us, after a few minutes learning how to wedge our skis started down the family trail. Although the family trail had smaller hills and appeared safe, to me it seemed way
An advantage of using text is that it tends to be more detailed than in movies. Additionally, books have more scenes and movies may cut things out that the creators find unimportant. Even though books have their pros, they have their disadvantages as well. For one thing, the text occasionally fails to capture the expressions of it’s characters, whereas a movie involves acting to portray their emotion. Another disadvantage of using this medium is in the movie you can hear the tone of how each character is speaking, while in the text the tone can’t be as easily deciphered. There are many advantages to watching a film rather than reading the story. One of these is that a movie tends to be easier to relate to, probably because of the better portrayed emotion. A con to viewing films rather than reading stories is that characters are often not how the reader imagined them to be look-wise. While both mediums offer an enjoyable story, they clearly have their own pros and
There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that over the last couple of decades movies have become more and more intricate and immersive. These effects can be directly linked to the advances in technology, which have allowed filmmakers to create very elaborate special effects and camera movements. As an aspiring filmmaker myself, it seems that the filmmaking and film going communities have grown exponentially over the last couple of years leaving behind other forms of entertainment such as books. With that being said it is sometimes a bit of a shocker to find out that some of my favorite movies were actually based on books that I had never even heard of before. Even though I am not a huge fan of reading myself, I do agree that reading the book will
I am adventurous. No I don't sky dive, wrestle crocodiles, or swim with sharks, but when asked by a group of friends to go cliff diving last summer, my best response was, “Sounds like fun!” I had never been afraid of heights yet have never experienced the thrill of cliff diving. All I could ask myself was, “What could go wrong?”
I am sure you are like everyone else out there and you want to achieve meaning in your life. There are unfortunately no short cuts to success or to invite meaning and fulfillment, into your experience. They are all the result of self-discipline and consistent commitment. Of course the moment you start down your journey towards the success you have visualized, you will start to enjoy the fruits of your endeavors. The challenge is to remain focused, patient and driven enough to stay on the path you have chosen. This is where discipline comes into it.
Many people know that juvenile delinquency is a problem, but they may not know that those problems could carry on through adulthood. Sports can keep children out of trouble, entertained, motivated, and healthy. Sports alone will not solve the entire problem, but it can help to reduce it. If parents start children in sports at a young age, their children may find that they enjoy them and will carry on throughout their middle and high school careers. Teenagers that are involved in extracurricular activities such as sports will be less likely to cause problems, get better grades, and live healthier lives compared to those who don’t participate.
Overcoming adversity is imperative. In fact, you can 't have the happiness and success you want unless you have adversity in your life and overcome it. It is essential for progressing into who you want to be. It shows you what you are made of. It teaches you more about yourself, how to approach what you want, and how to maintain the success that you have. Without it, you wouldn 't know how far you could go or how capable you are because you wouldn 't have anything to push you or compare to.
A lot of people don’t know that they have to do more with their education and get a good paying job. If you are declined a job that you know you will enjoy, but don 't have the college papers for a job can get disappointing. Some people are not inspired to go to college, and others can’t afford it. Other issues involved with the skills gap for jobs is the high requirements for that area of work, and peoples soft skills. High school is supposed to help you plan you for the real world, but not many classes help teach you the real world. This forms the skills gap in America, this stops people from being able to progress in today’s community.

Reading was never something I fussed about growing up. As a child, I loved genres of realistic fiction. I was hooked on The New Adventures of Mary Kate and Ashley, Goosebumps, The Amazing Days of Abby Hayes, Judy Moody, and especially, Zoobooks and Highlights magazines. My mother was always ready to help build my reading and writing skills. She took me to the library constantly to feed my passion for books and knowledge. I loved exploring the shelfs, organizing the books, and filling up my library cart. I tried keeping a diary in elementary school to keep track of my outings with my parents and grandparents to museums, zoos, movies, and libraries. This flash of writing enthusiasm was spun from books I read in the 4th and 5th grade that were
Also, books usually have more characters and give continued suspense so that the reader will be hooked or addicted to finish the book to find out the story. On the other hand, movie producers need to eliminate so many details about the story in order to squeeze everything into one to two hours. Due to this, those people who love detail information about stories usually prefer books than movies as movies does not have a detailed information about the story. Furthermore, reading books can not only enhance the reader’s vocabulary and creativity, but also increase their reading and writing skills, while watching movies only provides entertainment (Lee, wordpress.com).
