Skiing
The sport of skiing is dated back nearly 4,500 years. It began as a hunting technique for hunters in the Artic Rim tracking down game. Soon after, the Viking King Harald, in Iceland, used skiing not just for hunting, but for pleasure as well. The sport soon became competitive in racing, and wagers were placed on it. From here the sport spread across forty countries making it one of the fastest growing sports of the time (International Skiing History Association, 2004). It soon caught the attention of the local people of Flagstaff, Arizona. Lying on ancient volcanic ruins, the Flagstaff community began skiing the hills of Snowbowl in 1938 (International Skiing History Association, 2004). The Snowbowl ski area is made of up the extinct volcano, which is more than three million years old. Snowbowl is located in the highest mountains of Arizona, with a summit of 12,633 feet. In 1979, the mountain of Snowbowl was finally approved for additional construction of the ski area, expanding it and adding new features (The Sedona Dream Maker, 2003-2005). The Hopi and Navajo Tribes opposed this decision immensely for the sake of their heritage and beliefs lying on this very mountain. But, the Forest Service decided to go forth with it because they agreed to let the mountain have multiple uses, such as the recreation they were approving. Presently, the ski area has up to 30,000 to 180,000 visitors a year depending on the snowfall, according to Christopher McLeod for High Country News, September 11, 2000. With the technology of snowmaking now, the area is prone to expansion with the vicinity growing with each year.

Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl narrates the journey of adolescent Anne Frank during World War II. The diary allows insight into the changes Anne went through during the war after going into hiding to avoid persecution. Over the course of her time in hiding she matured, and used her diary to voice her innermost thoughts and desires. Anne’s diary shows how she came to terms with change as a result of her circumstances, and how she herself changed as a result.
“When you're young you don't know anything, but you have lot of energy to express yourself. So you make a lot of mistakes and you stumble, but you also get a lot of truth from within.” Said Gilbert Hernandez. This idea shows when one is young it is necessary for that person to express their emotions to deal with any complications they might encounter. In the play, “Diary of Anne Frank" Anne is a teenager dealing with the challenges of the Holocaust. Due to this her family goes into hiding. Throughout their experience conflicts start to come up between Anne and the other residents. When facing these conflicts she turns to her father, a sixteen year old boy named Peter, and her diary. It is in this play that the author uses Anne Frank’s relationship with her father, Peter, and her diary to demonstrate the theme of expressing feelings can help cope one with societal challenges beyond someone’s control.

Service dogs are another form of Animal Assisted Therapy. For example, a person that is deaf can own a hearing dog. “In these circumstances, a hearing dog can offer ameliorative benefits aside from alerting the caregiver to the phone ringing. A dog, being a full-time companion, ends up being a conversational partner that responds behaviorally to the statements and moods of other people nearby” (Fine 67). The dog becomes more than just a pet, but acts as a family member that takes full-time care of you.
If anyone has ever heard about or watched skiing it is probably alpine skiing. Alpine skiing is the most traditional and popular type of skiing. Some of the necessary pieces of equipment needed for skiing are, helmet, gloves, ski pants and jacket, goggles, ski poles, ski boots and bindings, and last but not least skis. There are ten alpine skiing events in the olympics they vary from Downhill and Slalom, to Moguls and Slopestyle. Alpine skiing has been around since about 600 BC in modern day China. Earlier skiers used one big pole or spear not two like modern day skiers. Until the mid 19th century skiing was only used for transportation, but since then it is mainly used as a recreational sport.
It’s hard to believe that back in the early 1980’s people “perceived [snowboarders] as daredevil adolescents who posed a threat to skiers” (Shipley). Though the sport was banned from almost every resort, it grew to be so popular that the resorts could no longer ignore the moneymaking possibilities. Resorts realized that the average young person was abandoning the sport of skiing, and learning the new trend of snowboarding. Not only that, but the younger generation who was taking up a new winter sport would choose snowboarding over skiing. These days, resorts spend thousands of dollars to attract snowboarders to their resorts with claims of the biggest halfpipe or the best board park. But how did this sport explode onto the scene? To answer this question, a brief history is in order.

From the Egyptians unleashing them on enemy forces to the Native Americans using them as watchdogs and draft animals, canines have served a purpose for centuries. Roman historians Plutarch and Pliny, as well as Greek historian Strabo, wrote of dogs “being protected with coats of mail” (Losowsky 2013). Greeks depicted canines in murals celebrating the Battle of Marathon, however these are not the only historical accounts of military dog service. They have been seen with Attila the Hun, William the Conqueror, the Spanish conquistadors, Frederick the Great, and succeeding generations of English rulers and leaders. Napoleon describes war dogs and their loyalty in his memoirs, “I walked over the battlefield and among the slain, a poodle killed bestowing a last lick upon his dead friend’s face. Never had anything on any battlefield caused me a like emotion” (Losowsky 2013). Germany used nearly 30,000 canine medics that were sent out into no-man’s-land, during World War I. While Napoleon troops were surrounded by poodles, evident in his account of a battle, there have been multiple breeds that serviced military personnel throughout time. Originally, the Dogs for Defense (DFD) organization had 32 potential breeds and crosses, but the list was narrowed down to seven breeds by the end of 1944. The seven chosen breeds were the German shepherd, Doberman pinscher, Belgian Sheepdog, Collie, Siberian husky, Malamute and Eskimo dog. Smaller dogs also have a role in service: the United States Air Force uses Cairn Terriers and the United States Navy has enlisted Beagles. While the Army routinely uses larger breeds such as German Shepherds and the Belgian Sheepdog, or a cross of one of these breeds. Military dogs have held many duties throughout his...
The Diary of Anne Frank is wonderfully well presented, not losing the interest of the reader. Each part of the diary helps me understand the terrible hardships that she faced and how she overcame her problems. Even though she was young, she still had a very effective style of writing to inform her readers. This book shows us the ignorance of what Hitler caused thinking that one race is “racially inferior” to another. The Diary of Anne Frank is a superb book to read to find out about the struggle and hardships that that the Jews had to face during World War 11. It showed me that even the Nazis could not diminish the hope and happiness of a fourteen-year-old girl named Anne Frank.
Thin air encompasses me as I commence the final day of skiing at Vail, Colorado. Seven days of skiing elapse rather painlessly; I fall occasionally but an evening in the Jacuzzi soothes my minor aches. Closing time approaches on the final day of our trip as I prepare myself for the final run of the vacation. Fresh off the ski lift, I coast toward the junction of trails on the unoccupied expert face of the mountain. After a moment of thought, I confidently select a narrow trail so steep that only the entrance can be seen from my viewpoint.
