Many people would say that skateboarding is a crime or skateboarding is annoying. This leads to one question; is skateboarding a nuisance? While many people would say it is a nuisance, skateboarding is actually positive in many ways. Despite many people saying that skateboarding is destructive or bad, skateboarding is a unique sub-culture that promotes positivity in society. Skating in public spots can be loud and annoying to some people, but is it actually bad? Skateboarding is loud, but the city is a loud place. The screeching of wheels just adds to the noise. Basketball is loud, too. Apart from the noise, people say that skaters damage ledges because of grinds, but damage from grinds and slides is incremental and apart from a skater getting mad and breaking something, arrests for skateboarding is rare. Some security guards take it too far though. There are many videos of skateboarders being harassed by security guards. For example, in 2008, a video was uploaded to YouTube about a Baltimore police officer pushing and berating a skater. …show more content…
Many people would argue that skateboarding is a destructive and vandalistic way of life, though many people don’t realize that it is one of the only lifestyles that does not discriminate against race, age, political views, the amount of money somebody makes, or the clothes somebody wears. Skateboarding is also positive, because ultimately it makes you more creative. Some places have metal clamps attached to ledges or rails, also known as “skate-stoppers” to stop skateboarders from grinding or sliding on the area. Though it is intended to stop skaters, it just makes them approach the ledge or rail in a different way so that they can use the skate-stoppers for
When the age arrived when fans became increasingly enthralled with hockey, these boards were no longer practical. This was where the conundrum started. Something was necessary to keep a hockey puck, hurdling at speeds
Another reason that scooters shouldn't be allowed at the skatepark is that the skatepark are getting overpopulated. A lot of things get more dangerous when they are busy. For example highways, streets and especially skateparks. You always hold your kids hand when they cross the street so why would you just let them free? Skateboards are like cars flying out and could hit you.
Many know Tony Hawk as one of the best skateboarders in the world. He has made many accomplishments in his life. He h...
During the 1950’s when skateboarding first got it’s legs it was a very popular activity to take part in during vacations to ocean side tourist attractions, or as an activity after surfing. Yet, by 1965, skateboarding had diminished in popularity completely, therefore almost every skateboard manufacturer went out of business. . During this time the only people who even wanted to skateboard were surfers who needed something to ride to practice their surfing while the waves were flat. Due to the fact that there were no skateboards being made or sold, those who wanted to skate had to take it upon them-selves to manufacture their own boards. Using any kind of scrap they could find to build a usable board out of, such as metal scrap pieces or old planks. These determined surfers had to unscrew the trucks and wheels off of roller skates and attach them to the bottom of their boards. And because these kids were from very poor families for the most part, and next to non had jobs of their own, they had to resort to taking the trucks and wheels off the roller skates secretly in the stores. Although.., the clay wheels th...
As skateboarding evolved, it was once something kids do in their free time, later became a prospering sport. This started many new changes to our local cities. “No skateboarding” signs are being posted places that skateboarders would go to practice. Architects are finding new ways to redesign structures like benches and handrails in the city, in order to lower the abundance of skateboarder in an area. All these changes have resulted in a good amount of money spent redoing everything to prevent skateboarding, but nothing is being done to give skateboarders a safe place to skate.
Since the early to mid 90’s, hip-hop has undergone changes that purists would consider degenerating to its culture. At the root of these changes is what has been called “commercial hip-hop". Commercial hip-hop has deteriorated what so many emcees in the 80’s tried to build- a culture of music, dance, creativity, and artistry that would give people not only something to bob their head to, but also an avenue to express themselves and deliver a positive message to their surroundings.
Is Dance Music a Subculture or Has it Now Become a Culture in its Own
I am part of a subculture, as are many people, even if they aren’t aware of it. A subculture is a group of people who operate based on shared values, norms and practices within a larger culture (Brym and Lie 2012). I work for Sport Chek as a sales associate and we have our own subculture, not only as a corporation but as a staff. As a staff, we are expected to have a certain set of values based on sports, but mainly on the lifestyle of an athlete. We are expected to be active and have an athletic background, whether it is an individual or a team sport. Since we are a sporting good retailer we are all expected to have some background knowledge when it comes to athletics. As a corporation, we are expected to work towards a common goal based on
In today’s world, music is played just about everywhere around the world. There is not many days that go by that you don’t hear some type of music. Those music’s can be broken down into their own sub categories and with that they can become into a subculture that people belong to or just claim to be a part of. To explain it more a subculture is defined as a cultural group within a culture, that often has beliefs or interest that is apart from those of the main culture itself. Subcultures are often made so that those who are actively participating within them can be set apart from those of other groups. They feel the need to establish their own ideas, traditions, languages, and criteria to form something that is their own and that makes them different from anything else. That can also cause for conclusions to be made up in the form of stereotypes that can sometimes be
Originating in the urban Bronx area of New York hip-hop culture emerged in the 1970’s as a way for minorities to form identifies and social status. Contemporarily, hip-hop has evolved to contain numerous activities such as, “spoken word poetry, theater, clothing styles, language, and some forms of activism,” (Petchauer). Also, in his Journal of Black Studies, author Tobey S. Jenkins states that the core framework of hip-hop culture consists of five elements, and those elements are, “the B-boy/B-girl (dance or break dance), the emcee (voice), the DJ (music), graffiti (art), and knowledge (the consciousness),”(Jenkins,2011). Jenkins also states that it is common for society to replace these elements when a person is to affiliate themselves with a product of hip-hop by five core stereotypes of the Black male hip-hop artist: “the nihilistic, self-centered, caked-out mogul with a god complex; the uneducated, lazy, absentee father; the imprisoned and angry criminal;
You’re standing in a crowd amongst thousands of fans at an Eminem concert, people from all over, shoulder to shoulder in a massive stadium, singing along every word of their favorite song for hours. People from all over are connected to each other through the power of music. When it comes to music, the life experiences, inspiration, and current events play a tremendously significant role. Hip hop is a form of art which can be expressed through rap songs, break-dancing, and graffiti art. The culture has become so popular that it has entered today’s fashion and modern language. Hip hop music is an extremely large part of today’s generation and a global genre, which influences the generation all over the world.
If a town has a skatepark that is built in the right spot and is also built correctly it could improve the looks of the town. Improving the looks of the town will attract people and skaters from everywhere. In order for this to happen the park has to be designed and built professionally. A few rails and ramps that are placed on the outskirts of the town are not going to improve the looks of anything. But, if a nice park is built in a busy, populated area where there are lots of people it will looks great.Not only do skateparks look good, but if it designed and constructed correctly, they are fiscally conservative and require little maintenance(Whitly). After they are built they practically last forever.
Freestyle is full of wild tricks, jumping and speed. The rider can be seen high in the air doing aerials, grinding berms, grabbing the board, jumping lumps, or riding backwards. Freestyle mimics skateboarding. Freestylers use natural obstacles to do their tricks. Riders find fallen trees, old buildings, bumps, dips and jumps where they can catch air and get their adrenaline going. They will also go to areas that have man made obstacle courses that resemble a skate park. In essence, it is a skatepark on the snow. These obstacles include ramps, jumps, and grinding bars. Freestylers also play in the halfpipe. It is a tightly packed area where dangerous tricks are performed. The rider must have great skill as they are moving extremely fast and catching major
Culture constitutes common characteristics of a particular group of people or a society such as behaviors, beliefs, objects, and any other characteristics of such a people. It is thus through culture, that groups of people define their unique characteristics that conform to their shared values and contribute towards building the society as sociologist suggests. Therefore, culture includes different societal aspects such as the customs, language, norms, values, tools, rules, products, technologies, morals, institutions, and organizations. The terms organizations and institutions will thus refer to the set of rules associated with specific activities within the society. For instance, healthcare, education, security, family, religion, and work
The parental guide sub culture may not seem like a culture but to the contrary these parents make up the biggest sub culture in the United States, these parents rely on parental books, television programs,blogs, and the latest of trends for teaching their children. Depending on which book, television program or blog they watch or read it may determine how a parent teaches their child about sex. Some of these blogs and books explains to parents how they first need to be comfortable with the topic of sex, they cannot become shy and start avoiding questions. They also need to know how much they want to talk about and how to explain it. Most of these blogs bring in the topic of religion to help parents with talking about sex. They usually
