The movie 'Mean Girls' is about a girl Cady who was homeschooled until the age of 16. Then she entered high school and met plastics (a group of mean teenage girls). She started becoming like them to fit in and gain acceptance by others. Then she realized her mistake and that people don’t like her so she apologized to people she has hurt. Situated identity; Situated identity is our conception of who we are in relation to the other people around us. Sometimes people support situated identities in public to facilitate smooth interaction even though they may not accept them privately. (DeLamater et al., 2015). This concept is pretty much seen in the whole movie. Since Janice convinced Cady to be friends with plastics and tell her everything that they talk about Cady was in a situated identity. When Cady met Janice and Damien in the mall after going to Regina’s house she told them about the burn book. In Regina’s house when they were discussing Damien she said, “He is almost too gay to function” but in the mall when Janice asked her whether she was in that burn book Cady refused and did not tell them that they both were in that burn book. After Regina kissed Aron and they got back together, Cady used to act like everything is normal in front of the plastics but when she used to be with Janice and Damien she used to backbite about the plastics. On the second day when Jason tried to make fun of her, she did not know how to respond until Regina saved her. She did not know how to react in a situation like this. In the lecture, we discussed that peers allow us to make relations on our own. Peer interactions are spontaneous and non-structured. Peers can have an effect on our socialization and develop our sense of identity. When she entered high school, she was a nerd with good grades and did not know how to socialize. When Janice and Damien forced her to interact with the plastics and tell them what they talk about she agreed. At that time, she was not able to figure out that this is not good for her. Slowly her personality started changing and she became just like plastics. She started misbehaving with her parents, ditching Janice and Damien. She was getting used by people. She did not interact with peers before so she did not have the experience of it. But slowly she began to figure out that it is affecting who she is. In this paper I argue that self-objectification is created and perpetuated by the mass media through the critiquing of mainstream films and television shows: Clueless and Gossip Girl. These forms of media glorify the dominant culture’s forms of capital that produce the thin, white, rich, feminine female protagonist. I will analyze how mainstream white male producers prioritize the white narrative and exclude girls of color from mainstream media through the internalization of the thin white image.
For early adolescence, it is group identity versus alienation. Adolescents either learn skills that allow them to be a part of and connected to the social world or they don’t, which causes them to withdraw from society and the support that comes with it. In the film, Cady experiences both group identity and alienation. The time spent as a member of the “Plastics” gave her a sense of group identity and provided her with the confidence she needed to be a part of a larger social world. One important aspect she experienced was group operations. Cady was able to distinguish herself and her group from others and form both ingroup and outgroup attitudes. She knew both her and everyone else’s role in the group and how to effectively coordinate within the group. Cady also becomes emotionally invested in the “Plastics”. She puts aside some of her own thoughts and feelings to benefit the group as a whole. There were many times when Regina placed peer pressure, the central process, upon her. Cady acted like a bully, went to parties, and pursued Aaron because she was pressured to. Although this was negative peer pressure, it still gave Cady the skills to resolve the psychosocial crisis. Although Cady did end up acquiring some of the necessary skills to resolve the crisis ( partially through peer pressure), there were still instances when she was all by herself with no real friends. Cady has always been homeschooled, so she did not really know what it was like to communicate with others and make friends. She thought that her actions are what she should be doing in order to make friends. As Cady gets closer to The Plastics, she starts to develop feelings for Regina’s ex-boyfriend, Aaron Samuels. Later on in the movie Cady has to make a choice whether she wants to be officially part of the group or to continue sabotaging it. Eventually she decides to be part of the group, which disappoints Janis; since Cady basically betrayed her. Cady starts developing into a whole new person; she became a Plastic. These social standings are determined by the popular group whether they will accept certain people based on shared interests and values but mainly on appearance. For example, some groups may isolate a student who does not have clothing considered to be attractive enough. An example of this bond is prominent in the CW’s hit show, Gossip Girl, which focuses on the world of high society elite at a private high school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York. Mean Girls is sending a message that women should not criticize one another to feel empowerment, it is unattractive to men to be mindless, and that White Americans have domains over other races.
