Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is an eye-opening sermon to many and an even greater eye opener to the unbelieving. Not only is it seen as controversial for the time, but many people disagreed with it. The entire sermon seemed to be based on one or two verses from the Bible, and many thought they were not used in the proper context. Patrick Henry makes a strong argument however in the end, Edwards’ sermon grows to be more effective. Edwards creates the argument by strengthening the writing through tone, structure, fallacies and knowledge of the congregation that became his audience. Henry’s piece uses methods of oratory persuasion but the actual topic of “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” has an advantage from the start by appealing to fear, a fallacy of logic. Even with the strong basis “The Speech in the Virginia Convention” by Patrick Henry, Edwards’ “Sinners in the hands of an Angry God” proves the more effective piece in the end.

Lamb proves that a negative perception of God could “affect a person’s passion for reading Scripture” (Lamb 22), the choice to draw near or flee from Him, and perception of his followers. Overall I think Lamb adequately uses evidence to demonstrate “negative perceptions of God, stemming from erroneous interpretations of the Old Testament, not only affect non-Christians who refuse to believe in him because of their misconceptions, they also affect Christians, in both obvious and subtle ways” (Lamb 21). If I could add to Lamb’s argument, I would include a section dealing with the origins of the misconceptions reviewed in this chapter. This section would enlighten readers to the sources the negative perceptions of God’s character. He speaks of the notorious Devil, whose name makes people shutter; they will do anything to escape from the Devil, even undergo a conversion. Edwards states, “The Devil is waiting for them,” as in the ones whom do not undergo conversion. Edwards also explains to the congregation that not only will they be greeted by the devil if they do not convert, but they will also be endangered by their own God. Their God will be outraged of those who do not undergo a conversion. He explains, “You are in the hands of an angry God.” Edwards’s explanation of this outraged God urges the congregation to undergo conversion fast. Moreover, Edwards uses one last horrific wording to convince the congregation to undergo conversion when he speaks of how some may not escape this dreadful future; this ultimately urges others to hurry in undergoing an emotional conversion.
