Motivation is the driving force behind all actions and reactions. In both Sinclair Ross's "The Painted Door" and Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Birthmark" motivation is the central influence behind decisions made by the characters. It causes a dilemma that invokes an action which eventually leads to the tragically ironic conclusions. One cannot attend to the topic of the motivation of characters without knowing a bit about the characters themselves. The central female character in "The Painted Door", Ann, is struggling for inner satisfaction and happiness in her marriage. Her name is used only once in the literary work illustrating that she has very little individuality; she feels she is simply an extension of her husband, John. Her motivation is caused by her selfish attitude and propensity to focus on John's flaws; this derives from her desire for John to change. As a farmer's wife she feels an increasing isolation, especially during winter months with "the silence weighing upon her" (Ross 139) and "the clock [that] tick[s] on like a glib little idiot" (166). Ann's perception of John and her isolation motivates her decision to sleep with Steven. "The Birthmark's" central character, Aylmer, is a recently married scientist. He is an inventor of exotic potions and a philosopher of scientific knowledge. After the marriage, eliminating the only imperfection, a tiny mysterious hand shaped birthmark, on his young wife, Georgiana, preoccupies him. His daily intensifying obsession eventually consumes his wife as well, leading to the isolation of Georgiana when he attempts to remove the "odious hand" (Hawthorne 37). Although the characters and situations in both short stories are profoundly different, each motivation stems from a desire to change their respective partners. Each character is forced to choose between two options set before them by their motivation. The dilemmas, developed from the motivation, compel the characters to resolve their conflicts. In "The Painted Door", Ann is struggling in a violent tumult of mental and emotional anguish and trying to find importance in life. The conflict arises in her decision to gratify one of two goals; immediate satisfaction, sleeping with Steven, or long term satisfaction, the love and support of her faithful dependable husband. Ann also faces a conflict between a social need and an emotional need. Initially with John she feels she can't connect to society because "John never talks [He] never danced or enjoyed himself" (Ross 160-162), however after sleeping with Steven her guilt leads her to realize that "John is the man with him lay all the future" (174) and only with him can she be completely and emotionally fulfilled.
With nobody but herself at home, Ann strongly desires to talk to someone, and that someone who arrives at her house is Steven. Ann who has been feeling anxious and helpless while isolated suddenly feels relief when Steven comes as shown, “-and suddenly at the assurance of his touch and voice the fear that had been gripping her gave way to an hysteria of relief.” Steven helps comfort Ann, while Ann is being cautious of herself. She knows that Steven is enticing, but will not give in to him despite how attractive she finds him. Steven is the complete opposite of John and Ann compares John to Steven multiple times, “Steven’s smile, and therefore difficult to reprove. It lit up his lean, still-boyish face with a peculiar kind of arrogance: features and smile that were different from John’s.” and even favours Steven more than her husband. Ann is used to seeing John’s features but not Steven’s. This excites Ann and prompts her to develop feelings that are of a high school girls’, “She didn’t understand, but she knew. The texture of the moment was satisfyingly dreamlike.” It takes Ann a moment to realize that her object of temptation is right in front of her, and it does not take long for her to take the opportunity to ease her boredom and isolation through her upcoming
In “The Painted Door” Anne’s loneliness forces her to find some means to occupy her time and she decides to paint the walls despite the futility of such an act in the cold of a Saskatchewan winter: “The frost in the walls on a day like this would crack and peel [the paint] as it dried, but she needed something to keep her hands occupied, something to stave off the gathering cold and loneliness” (50). Clearly, Ross has set this image up as a representation of Ann’s inability to explore the real issues of her strained relationship with John. Just as a solid foundation is necessary for a sturdy structure, so too is it necessary for a strong relationship. However, Ann’s attempt to cover over the cracks in the walls is really an attempt to cover up and avoid facing the flaws in her relationship, which we recognize will only lead to more problems in the future. Furthermore, her need to keep her hands busy could be seen as a reference to her later infidelity with Steven, an act that will, for a short time, stave off the loneliness she feels in a marriage she has begun to view as cold and unfulfilling. It is only when Ann is forced, through boredom, to face her unhappiness that she recognizes the true cause of her unhappiness – the problem in the foundation. In the beginning of the story, John has to go see his father who lives five miles away and help him as there is a blizzard expected. Since the snow was too deep, he had to walk over to his father's house due to the wagon would not be able to go through all the snow. Ann never being alone, argues that surely she is more important than John's father by saying, “[..]Surely I'm as important as your father.” This later end with her failure to remain loyal due to the fact that she starts comparing her own husband qualities to the qualities of Steven making her to be unfaithful to John who later sees Ann and Steven together. This was all a result to Steven’s ambitions to undermine Ann’s loyalty to John. But as the story continue we see that Ann remains loyal by keeping positive and also fully aware that John will always return home for her. So keeping this thought in mind, she keeps to a routine and decides to paint the bedroom door knowing that it's too cold for the paint to stay on the door. Ann wishes, from the very beginning of the story, that John would stay at home with her rather than go to check on his father. However, rather than expressing these sentiments exactly, she acts very cold towards him and insists that she’ll be perfectly fine, trying to guilt him into staying. Kenan’s “The Foundations of the Earth” illustrate how arrogance undermines knowledge and individual power and humility enhances those qualities. In each story, characters with parochial worldviews encounter people who challenge them to change. Other perspectives are available if they are able to let go of their superior attitudes. For example, Hawthorne’s protagonist, Aylmer, believes he has the ability and right to create perfection. He views a birthmark on his wife, Georgiana, as evidence of a flaw that must be removed no matter what the cost. His assistant, Aminadab, (an earthy alter-ego) remarks, “If she were my wife, I’d never part with that birthmark” (Hawthorne 531). He does not say, “I’d let it be” or “I’d tolerate it”, but rather “I’d never part with it.” This interpretation is so antithetical to Aylmer’s that it cries for inquiry. “What is it that you are thinking, Aminadab?” or “What is it about this birthmark that I find so ugly that you would treasure?” Aylmer does not ask these questions. Arrogance shuts him down. One needs humility in order to consider alternative points of view. New ideas do not enter Aylmer’s mind and he does not develop. His arrogance culminates in the death of Georgiana. In the other two stories, however, the characters mature by humbly opening to diverse perspectives, thus gaining knowledge and individual power.
Ann and John, two characters from he short story "The Painted Door", do not have a very healthy relationship. John is a simple farmer who thinks the only way he can please his wife, Ann, is by working all day to earn money for her. However Ann would prefer him to spend more time with her. Their relationship is stressed even further when Ann is left at home alone with nothing to think about but their relationship because John has to go to his father’s house. The terrible snowstorm accentuates Ann’s feelings of loneliness and despair. John does not pay enough attention to Ann, and therefore creates a weak relationship.

But Thomas Foster seems to think differently, who argues that it is not necessary for a vampire to embody a stereotypical vampire. Surprisingly enough, even humans can be these types of monsters. From Foster 's perspective, being a vampire not only includes an individual 's aesthetics, but also their actions, personality, intent, and overall representation of personal identity. The story’s tone is one of romantic controversy, a dilemma at a high level of existence. The scientist’s love for his craft competes very intensively with his newfound love for his wife. It is also very psychological, strictly dealing with the raw mind of its subjects as if the ominous narrator told the story from inside their mind, rather than observe it from the outside. He describes the processes that one may take to reach a certain degree of knowledge and to find the elixir of life, which is described in this story as the ultimate goal of the scientific community. Also, the narrator is very opinionated about events in the story.
Her tense mind is then further pushed towards insanity by her husband, John. As one of the few characters in the story, John plays a pivotal role in the regression of the narrator’s mind. Again, the narrator uses the wallpaper to convey her emotions. Just as the shapes in the wallpaper become clearer to the narrator, in her mind, she is having the epiphany that John is in control of her.
The Scarlet Letter is a blend of realism, symbolism, and allegory. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses historical settings for this fictional novel and even gives historical background information for the inspiration of the story of Hester Prynne in the introduction of The Scarlet Letter, ‘The Custom-House’. The psychological exploration of the characters and the author’s use of realistic dialogue only add to the realism of the novel. The most obvious symbol of the novel is the actual scarlet letter ‘A’ that Hester wears on her chest every day, but Hawthorne also uses Hester’s daughter Pearl and their surroundings as symbols as well. Allegory is present as well in The Scarlet Letter and is created through the character types of several characters in the novel.
