The Sinaloa Cartel
Joaquin El Chapo Guzmán has been one of the most persecuted drug traffickers, both by Mexican and American authorities. For years he has remained at the head of the Sinaloa cartel, one of the most controlled criminal organizations in drug trafficking.
The Sinaloa cartel is located in the town of Culiacan, in the northern state of Sinaloa. Its main leaders are Joaquin El Chapo Guzman and Ismael Zambada García alias El Mayo.
He competes for the territory with other cartels like Los Zetas, the Juárez cartel and the Tijuana cartel. The first generation of capos of this cartel was headed by Pedro Aviles Perez, at the end of the sixties. Several reports point to him as the pioneer in the use of aircraft for drug trafficking to the United States.
In the 1980s, the second generation of drug traffickers in Sinaloa were led by Roberto Moreno, Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo, Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo and Aviles Perez's nephew Joaquin Guzman Loera Para 1990 la organization was divided into two: the Tijuana cartel, run by the Arellano Félix brothers and the Sinaloa cartel, led by Hector Luis Palma Salazar, Adrian Gomez González and Joaquin Guzman Loera. When Hector Luis Palma Salazar El Güero was arrested on June 23, 1995 by soldiers of the Mexican Army, his friends Joaquin Guzman Loera, took the command of the cartel.
Guzman was captured in Central America on June 9, 1993 and delivered to Mexico, where he was put in jail in a maximum security prison. Nevertheless 19 of January 2001 escaped and returned to the control of the cartel of Sinaloa.
The two lieutenants of the Sinaloa cartel are Ismael Zambada García and El Chacal J15. Another close collaborator, Javier Torres Félix, was captured and warrant to the United States in December 2006 so far, Guzmán and Zambada have escaped capture operations.

Comprised and founded by rogue Mexican Special Ops soldiers they branched off from their former employers (The Gulf cartel) and are now fighting for their territory. Based in Matamoros the Gulf Cartel was the original heavy hitter of Mexico's cartels. Currently the Gulf Cartel is in an ongoing war with the Los Zetas. The Ñeta Prison Gang or “Asocacion Ñeta” originated in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico during the early 1970’s. The gang received its name from their Taino origins; when a baby was born, the parents would hold the baby up and scream “Ñeta.” The founder of the gang was Carlos Irriarte who was given the nickname The Shadow, or “La Sombra”. The gang erupted when a group of offenders wanted to stand up and defend inmate rights and call attention to the abuses they experienced by some of the other prisoners and guards. The gang also banded together in order to battle with another gang who called themselves “G’27’s” or “Los Insectos.” The Ñeta gang evolved from a maximum-security prison called “Oso Blanco.” The Ñeta gang’s leader, Irriarte, was later killed in March of 1981 after he was betrayed by the leader of the G’27’s, a fellow gang member, and a guard who was in on the plan; he was stabbed and shot. Since many of the gangs were in the drug trafficking business, his death led to a series of prison riots that ended up with the stealing of narcotics in the pharmacy. In order to seek revenge for their leader’s death, the Ñeta Gang chiseled a tunnel that eventually led straight to the cell of “Manota”, the G’27’s leader, and stabbed him repeatedly before they cut his body into 84 pieces. Although this was an obvious sign of dominance within the prison, it was also a call for attention.

The original cartel became a big issue more than two decades ago. The leader was Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo who knew he eventually was going to get arrested. He was wise enough, that before he was incarcerated he split his business between two cartels, the Sinaloa Cartel and Tijuana Cartel. Both were allies at the time, but as they grew they became in enemies. Of course, in the cartel an enemy is a dead man. The Tijuana cartel sent one of their hitmen to kill of the Sinaloa drug lord. The hitman made a mistake and killed a Catholic priest. Most Mexicans are Catholics, when this story reached the news Mexicans realized it was worse than they thought. Now, most of Mexico part of the Catholic religion so this made headlines and thats when Mexico realized they had a problem headed their way. Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria, the man that ruled cocaine distribution around the world, and devastated it in the process. Pablo Escobar’s influence and fame were so vast and reaching he outgrew his britches. Escobar’s vision and narcissistic approach which rose him to become the most intelligent, violent and influential political figure of narcotics and the Medellin cartel; which, led to the fatal bullet ending him on the rooftop of an abandoned house in his home town.
Mexico has a long history of cartels the deaths, drugs and weapon trafficking is in all time high increasing year by year. “Mexico's gangs have flourished since the late 19th century, mostly in the north due to their proximity to towns along the U.S.-Mexico border. But it was the American appetite for cocaine in the 1970s that gave Mexican drug cartels immense power to manufacture and transport drugs across the border. Early Mexican gangs were primarily situated in border towns where prostitution, drug use, bootlegging and extortion flourished” (Wagner). Over the last several decades, violence has consumed and transformed Mexico. Since the rise of dozens of Mexican cartels, the Mexican government has constantly been fighting an ongoing war with these criminal organizations. The cartel organizations have a primary purpose of managing and controlling illegal drug trafficking operations in Central America and South America to the United States. Violence on a massive and brutal scale has emerged due to the nature of the illegal drug trade. Because the drug trade is vastly widespread, cartels are often fighting one another and competing in business. Mexican authorities count at least 12 major cartels, but also talk of an untold numbers of smaller splinter groups. (Taipei Times). Five cartels from Mexico have risen to become the extremely powerful amongst all the drug organizations operating in Mexico. The Guadalajara Cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel, the Tijuana Cartel, the Juarez Cartel, and the Gulf Cartel. These organizations, along with other distinguished Mexican cartels, have plagued Mexico with violence, terror, and fear due to the essence and nature of illegal drug trafficking.
The Mexican drug-trafficking cartels are said to have been established in the 1980s by a man named Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo, also known as “The Godfather”. With the help of Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo and Rafael Caro Quintero, Miguel started the Guadalajara Cartel, which is one of the first to have thrived from association with the Colombian cocaine trade. The two men who helped Miguel Gallardo establish the cartel were arrested, so Gallardo, the single leader of the cartel “was smart enough to privatize the Mexican drug trade by having it run by lesser-known bosses” (The Five Most Famous Drug Cartels”), that he often met with in Acapulco. Eventually Miguel was arrested as well which caused the split of the Guadalajara Cartel into the Sinaloa Cartel and the Tijuana Cartel.
