The Sinaloa Cartel
Joaquin El Chapo Guzmán has been one of the most persecuted drug traffickers, both by Mexican and American authorities. For years he has remained at the head of the Sinaloa cartel, one of the most controlled criminal organizations in drug trafficking.
The Sinaloa cartel is located in the town of Culiacan, in the northern state of Sinaloa. Its main leaders are Joaquin El Chapo Guzman and Ismael Zambada García alias El Mayo.
He competes for the territory with other cartels like Los Zetas, the Juárez cartel and the Tijuana cartel. The first generation of capos of this cartel was headed by Pedro Aviles Perez, at the end of the sixties. Several reports point to him as the pioneer in the use of aircraft for drug trafficking to the United States.
In the 1980s, the second generation of drug traffickers in Sinaloa were led by Roberto Moreno, Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo, Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo and Aviles Perez's nephew Joaquin Guzman Loera Para 1990 la organization was divided into two: the Tijuana cartel, run by the Arellano Félix brothers and the Sinaloa cartel, led by Hector Luis Palma Salazar, Adrian Gomez González and Joaquin Guzman Loera. When Hector Luis Palma Salazar El Güero was arrested on June 23, 1995 by soldiers of the Mexican Army, his friends Joaquin Guzman Loera, took the command of the cartel.
Guzman was captured in Central America on June 9, 1993 and delivered to Mexico, where he was put in jail in a maximum security prison. Nevertheless 19 of January 2001 escaped and returned to the control of the cartel of Sinaloa.
The two lieutenants of the Sinaloa cartel are Ismael Zambada García and El Chacal J15. Another close collaborator, Javier Torres Félix, was captured and warrant to the United States in December 2006 so far, Guzmán and Zambada have escaped capture operations.
