Similarities Between The Yellow Wallpaper And One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

As it was once said in the popular movie Spider-Man, "With great power comes great responsibility." In these two readings, the people in positions of authority are trusted with the livelihood of those who have been deemed unfit to take care of themselves. Characters such as Nurse Ratchet and John are used to show how this authority can be abused in search of total control and power, undermining the individuality of those they have been put in charge of. Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Ken Kesey use both “The Yellow Wallpaper” and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, to demonstrate how the abuse of power and authority between the sick and those in-trusted to help them is used to show the importance of individuality in regards to their healing journey. Within both texts there are very prominent signs of manipulation, this manipulation is used by those with the authority to control and manage those who have none. However, even though it is evident in both texts, the way manipulation is achieved is different. Within the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” John was the character who was in a position of power, to solidify and keep his dominance he uses his credibility and emotional tether as husband and wife saying things like “I am a doctor, dear, and I know” (Gilman 652). This however is not how The Nurse in the novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest achieved the manipulation of those under her. Ms. Ratchet used fear, exploiting her rank in the ward and access to certain treatments, such as shock therapy, lobotomy and the ability to move patients into the disturbed ward, to keep this authority. In both texts though manipulation is realized (achieved) with different tactics they both receive the same end result, keeping the patients in line with their views and ideals.
