Imagine if every family member you truly cherished, suddenly died. Edgar Allan Poe didn’t need to imagine this because he experienced it himself. Edgar Poe lost many of his closest cherished ones to death, which eventually affected his great mind. “The Raven” and “The Fall of The House of Usher” were tremendous stories, which were obviously created by Edgar Poe. In these stories, Edgar Poe mimics his sorrow in these texts. Although “The Raven” and “The Fall of The House of Usher” differ in plot, they share commonalities’ in haunting voices and how the settings of both texts are dark and scary.

In the story, what happens is that the narrator is passing on his horseback, when he notices “The House of Usher”. The mansion is his friend’s house, which his name was Roderick Usher. Later on the story, his sister Madeline comes back from the dead, which she eventually kills Roderick Usher. But however, the narrator is able to stay alive and escape. “The Fall of The House of Usher” can also be contemplated as a gothic poem because it place attention on the physical structures to establish the mood. The narrator characterizes the usher mansion as an “insufferable gloom”. Also additionally, the vaults in which Madeline was entombed in, add to the mood significantly. Furthermore, the two texts also have a torturer that is either evil or has supernatural powers. In “The Raven”, an example of supernatural power is when the Raven answer’s back to the man “nevermore”. This is supernatural because Ravens aren’t supposed to talk like a human.
