A book about friendships, and a movie about the contrast between conformity and personal freedom. These are the descriptions of the literary works that will be compared and contrasted in this essay. The climatic book, The Pigman, and the inspiring movie, The Dead Poets Society. Both literary works contain several themes such as realism, mortality, and individuality. In this essay, Mortality will be the theme. The Pigman and the Dead Poets Society are very similar in background of the theme, but different in influences. The background of both stories have connections in it because of the topic, death. In influences, they differentiate by the outcomes that happens. Although there are more things to explain in comparison between the two literary …show more content…
works, those will be explained along with the main things which are the background and influences. As defined, Mortality is the state of being subject to death. Death is a very controversial topic, and it comes to this question: “What is Death?” Some might say it is where life ends. They think death as a way to escape life. Others will think that it’s a cycle of life. In the Pigman, there have been deaths which are much related to each other. One of the main characters, Mr.Pignati, will die in the end from the heart attack that was given from the shock of Bobo’s death. Bobo is very precious to Mr. Pignati. He was always there to cope the loneliness that Mr.Pignati felt from his wife’s death. The agony that she left for Mr.Pignati brought guilt and depression. Although his life looks very bitter, he still manages to give smiles to others, but in the end, he dies from a mournful experience. Mr. Pignati’s death was enough to discuss all deaths from the story. The relations between the deaths of the characters in The Pigman describes Mortality very well. In the death of all the characters, there had been an influence given to others. In the movie, Dead Poets Society, Neil Perry, one of the main characters, dies from depression that his dad gave him by forcing him not to be an actor. It was also a way to escape his life. His friends, and his teacher, Mr. Keating, along with others felt sorry for his death. The characters from both stories demonstrated the meaning of mortality by means of relations to others. In addition, they both have the same reason of death, depression. Lastly, their deaths caused an influence to other. In these ways, the background of The Pigman and the Dead Poets Society have connections in many such ways. However, their death’s influence will make the difference. Death is found everywhere.
It is a part of life. However, someone’s death can affect other people’s individuality which come to the question: “How does it affects others?” The stories have various distinctions in them when it comes to this question. The plot of both stories is one of the things that creates this distinction between the two works of literature. In the Pigman, it is about an old man who changed the lives of two sophomore students by showing the true meaning of friendship and trust. In the Dead Poets Society, it is about conformity of the school versus the personal freedom in which Mr. Keating shows to his students. From both of the plots, it is recognizable that one shows a message, and the other shows the differences between discipline and desires. In terms of morality, these two plots are involved in the death of the characters in which will influence other characters in the stories. In The Pigman, an example of the influence that has been shown is the depression of Mr. Pignati from Conchetta’s death. Another is Mr. Pignati’s heart attack from Bobo’s death. Lastly is the lesson that John and Lorraine learned after Mr. Pignati’s death. In the Dead Poets Society, the only influence is that the idealist, Neil’s group w/ Mr. Keating, and the realist, the school, had created an argument between who to blame in the death of Neil Perry. The idealist blames Mr. Perry while the realist blames Mr. Keating. In the end, Mr. Keating was blamed, leaving a sad ending. The characters that had an influence on someone’s death had different influences which is based on how they acted throughout the story. Although one teaches the moral and the other shows the argument of an idealist and a realist, they both shared the same grief in the end. In addition, their grief change their lives in such ways that hasn't been told in the story itself. With these contrasts, this is how The Pigman and the Dead Poets Society differ from influences that have been shared throughout
the story. Still, these influences made the story exhilarating and emotional. Mortality is an interesting topic. It shows us how it changes the background of the story by means of relations and also shows us how it affects other people. The Pigman and the Dead Poets Society are the stories that contains good examples that demonstrates the meaning of mortality. Without the theme, Mortality, both stories won’t have an interesting conclusion since both stories depended their ending and climax on the topic of mortality. Death is a major part of our life, and Mortality is just the basis of our lives itself.
There is a lot of symbolism in the Pigman writing by Paul Zindel. The three monks symbolism means Lorraine, John, and Mr. Pignati friendship. One example of the friendship of Lorraine, John and Mr.pignati is when he has a heart attack Lorraine and John skips school to go see him. The three monkeys symbolism you can find it in the Pigman. My conclusion is that the three monkey symbolism is in the Pigman.
The Big Lebowski was a screenplay written by Joel and Ethan Coen. It is a comedy that is screen written and a movie that shows how life can be so unexpected. Lebowski known as “The Dude” has had his life terrorized and even his belongings being terrorized which first started off with his rug then went on to other belongings in his house being broken into and being destroyed and along with his car. All The Dude wanted was his rug back "it brought everything together" as he would say within the movie. The Dude went through a whole lot of trouble for this to happen. The people who are terrorizing The Dude have the wrong person, they thought he was a millionaire whose wife owed them money. The Dude is unemployed, broke and lives In an apartment complex and who drinks excessively and smokes blunts while only worrying about bowling. The topic being addressed in this paper will conclude the difference between bums vs achievers. How is The dude much different from Jeffrey Lebowski when the dude does the majority of the work through the novel?. The Dude and Lebowski might be different in certain ways but, there are no differences from each other.
Ever since we’ve had the ability to learn, we have been taught to be kind and considerate, to always smile and live in hope of tomorrow. Fairytales and storybooks have happy endings, where the ones who live humbly always win at the end. But is that the truth? Through The Pigman, Paul Zindel is able to show us the reality of life and how necessities like love are nothing more than a mere lie.
Everyday we observe people’s contrasting opinions. Whether it be in politics, school, or in one’s personal life, emotions are often a major factor when it comes to expressing one’s ideas. In writing, an audience must be aware this, and decide for themselves if an author is being bias or equally representing all sides to a situation. In both Into the Wild and In Cold Blood, the authors form distinct opinions about their main characters and believe family structure heavily influenced their future.
In our contemporary civilization, it is evident that different people have somewhat different personalities and that novels behold essential and key roles in our daily lives; they shape and influence our world in numerous ways via the themes and messages expressed by the authors. It is so, due to the different likes of our population, that we find numerous types and genres of books on our bookshelves, each possessing its own audience of readers and fans. In this compare and contrast essay, we will be analysing and comparing two novels, The Chrysalids and Animal Farm, and demonstrating how both books target the general audience and not one specific age group or audience of readers. We will be shedding light at the themes and messages conveyed to us in both books, the point of view and the style of writing of the authors as well as the plot and the format used by the authors, in order to demonstrate how both books are targeting the general audience.
Life is a complicated process. It’s filled with many things that keep it interesting but at the same time, very dull. Life’s what you make it and for many, it’s something we all strive for. In the story, The Space Between, the author takes full advantage of the premise as there’s rarely a dull moment- as in life. The book is filled with many literary devices that work nicely with the plot and dialogue. These include; metaphors, similes, irony, personification, and many more. We follow a young man who is finding his way in the world. He has only a week to change his life for the better. But he will face many obstacles on the way that brings the readers into a startling and fun journey.
Between the time period they took place in and the plots they tell, the film “Life Is Beautiful,” and the memoir “Night,” have a lot in common. The authors tell of similar events, yet they also manage to make their stories have numerous differences. Some of these differences vary around the way each of these stories are told. Others differences focus on the relationships between
As the sweltering, hot sun signified the start of a scorching afternoon, a young boy lay in the fields harvesting vegetables for another family. He had been enslaved to perform chores around the house for the family, and was only given very few privileges. While his stomach throbbed with pangs of hunger, he continued cooking meals for them. After the family indulged in the cozy heat from the fireplace, he was the one to clean the ashes. Despite his whole body feeling sore from all the rigorous work he completed, the young boy had been left alone to suffer. As months passed by, he desired independence. He wanted to cook his own food, make his own fire, harvest his own plants and earn money. The lad soon discovered that he needed faith and courage to break away from his restricted environment. When put in a suppressive situation, every person has the aspiration to escape the injustice. This is what Harrison Bergeron and Sanger Rainsford do to liberate themselves from the external forces that govern their lives. Harrison, the main character of “Harrison Bergeron” written by Kurt Vonnegut, is a strong, fourteen year old boy whose talents have been concealed by the government. Growing up in an environment where equality has restricted people’s thinking, Harrison endeavors to change society’s views. Rainsford, the main character of “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell, is a skilled hunter who believes that animals were made to be hunted; he has no sympathy for them. Stranded on island with a killer chasing him, he learns to make rational choices. While both Harrison and Ranisford are courageous characters, Rainsford’s prudence enables him to overpower his enemy, whereas Harrison’s impulsive nature results in him being ...
The presence of death in the novel looms over the characters, making each of them reflect on the
Each literary work portrays something different, leaving a unique impression on all who read that piece of writing. Some poems or stories make one feel happy, while others are more solemn. This has very much to do with what the author is talking about in his or her writing, leaving a bit of their heart and soul in the work. F. Scott Fitzgerald, when writing The Great Gatsby, wrote about the real world, yet he didn’t paint a rosy picture for the reader. The same can be said about T.S. Eliot, whose poem “The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock,” presents his interpretation of hell. Both pieces of writing have many similarities, but the most similar of them all is the tone of each one.

To create living people should always be the goal in literature. It is how a writer can illuminate a new facet of existence and can only be achieved through the use of a sympathetic imagination. Hemingway erred however, when he argued, “A character is a caricature” (153). A caricature may be a character sometimes, but it may also be a fully realized and living person at others. As in Watchmen, when a caricature lives, it can be an extremely powerful thing.
