The Truman Show by Peter Weir, “The Midnight Zone” by Lauren Groff, “One Today” by Richard Blanco, and “Born a Crime” by Trevor Noah. All these texts have connections with the character having a relationship with the setting presented through the story while either being positively or negatively impacted by the setting affecting their life. Although society can argue that relationships between an individual and a place/region are not directly involved. Society would be mistaken to believe the concept of a place not being relevant and it’s false, while the truth is that a place does affect a person and has been shown countless times through these stories. The character is Trevor Noah, the author of the book, and he talks about his experiences when he was younger and lived in South Africa during a racial period, apartheid. Trevor had considered himself “born a crime” (Noah, 21) due to the racial laws in place where different races could be together. Trevor’s life is impacted by the location he lives in. He often couldn’t find a place to fit in due to him being a mixed race and not looking like his mother; he could’ve been taken by law enforcement for being “the wrong color kid in the wrong color area” (Noah, 29). The relationship between Trevor and the environment around him did not produce a positive outcome, being constantly shunned while trying to live somewhat of a normal life. The fake reality produced Truman into being this human who was joyful, exhilarated, and had everything he wanted and needed. This world was created by Christof to give “Truman the chance to lead a normal life” (The Truman Show) because the real world humanity lives in is a “sick place” (The Truman Show). If Truman had a living experience like Trevor Noah or even like the mother in “The Midnight Zone” his character would’ve been different, he would’ve been like society in general where there are feelings beyond the good ones and unpleasant experiences that develop in someone's actions/thoughts which are presented in living in this “sick world” that Christof mentions. Unlike the topic of a perfect world, there are horrific imperfections such as the actions of school shootings talked about in “One Today”.
