For this semester we covered many concepts about American culture through literature and film. One of the most outstanding theme/themes for me this semester was the inequality amongst humans, and the justice we use to fix it. In every story in literature and film, there is always some kind of goal, and these texts that we were given shows us that. The books that I read for this unit were, One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and The Crucible. The One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, is about a young man who plays crazy and goes psychiatric ward to avoid prison work. He’s very bullheaded, so when he goes to the ward and see their mistreatment of the patients, he tries to fight their system. He tries to bring some justice to the patients, but it soon becomes very clear that all of them know their place in this society and it is impossible for them to escape. This story clearly represents the inequality there is between humans, and the system they have created in the ward can be seen anywhere in systems across America. This story is set in the late 1600’s so many people believe it to be real. The antagonist Abigail Williams brings the town to an almost self-destruction, as she leads her followers to accuse all the people they dislike. The protagonist, John Proctor, tries to bring some justice by saying that Abigail was doing all of this out of jealousy of his wife. Again though, the courts system goes against that and they end up killing many people out of fear. In the last scene, John is able to save his wife but he is not so lucky himself. Something interesting that I saw in both these texts was that there was an effort of justice but in both cases it ends in a catastrophe of killing. I question whether these authors did this because they felt that in the end there really was no justice in the
