The United States prides itself as country that offers everyone the American Dream, but to many, the dream is a nightmare. The American Dream is the ideal that every citizen of the US deserves equal opportunity to be successful and happy through hard work and determination. The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger has an optimistic view on the American Dream, while To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee offers a more cynical perspective. Although the dream is idealistic, many claim they have become successful through it.

In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the American Dream is considered cynical because of its many unrealistic aspirations. Racism, poverty and prejudice are prevalent in the town of Maycomb which causes an innocent man to be convicted of a crime a white woman invented. These injustices prevent minorities from achieving the American Dream. “There's something in our world that makes men lose their heads -they couldn't be fair if they tried. In our courts when it's a white man's word against a black man's word, the white always wins, they're ugly, but these are the facts of life”. (252) Tom Robinson, an innocent man was convicted of a crime he did not commit because the court system chose to favor a white man over a black man. The trail shows how the American Dream is not a reality and factors like racism cause Tom Robinson's life to end. The American Dream is not a reality if the only people who can achieve it are privileged white people. Through TKAM people are judged by superficial attributes which makes it impossible for them to achieve happiness and success even if they work
After reading both, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and “Paradox and Dream” by John Steinbeck, it is extremely clear that both authors believe the American Dream differs from person to person. Though, the main similarity between American’s different versions of the American Dream is that each person wants more than they have. No matter the social status or salary, each person dreams of more; more money, a bigger home, a better job, etc.
The American Dream is something that anyone no matter their background, social standings, or ethnicity can improve their life through hard work.
Wealth, material possessions, and power are the core principles of The American Dream. Pursuit of a better life led countless numbers of foreign immigrants to America desiring their chance at the vast opportunity. Reaching the American Dream is not always reaching true happiness. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby achieves the American Dream, but his unrealistic faiths in money and life’s possibilities twist his dreams and life into useless life based on lies.
The American Dream has been the ideal way of life to every citizen. Equal opportunity to achieve success through hard work and persistence allows people to strive for The American Dream. For others, The Dream might have a different meaning to what the think is achievable. In the essay, “Is the American Dream even possible” John Steinbeck makes accusations about the American Dream and the credibility of it. The American Dream in Steinbeck's perspective is that in reality, The Dream is there to believe but not there to its full potential.

As everyone has their own interpretation of the American Dream, Steinbeck uses George and Lennie, Crooks, and Curley’s Wife to demonstrate how the American Dream is impossible to achieve and how important the dream was for people so they could carry on with their lives.

Hansberry and Langston see America like as a place to find the dream desired, although they also see limitation to obtain the American Dream, such as poverty, freedom, inequality, racism and discrimination.

Today, people not only search for prosperity and wealth, but they also search for happiness, equality, and determination. The American Dream is for everyone, not just the rich. The term “The American Dream” is a term used to describe the American way of life in general. It stands for something great, something that every one can strive towards. A dream can be a desire for something great. In America, the American Dream allows dreams to become realities. To live this dream is to succeed. It allows anyone, rich or poor to have the opportunity to succeed. It is the ability to come from nothing and become so me thing. To succeed at any thing you do, you must have patience and persistence. It requires hard work, persistence and a desire for something better. To have these qualities and the desire and ambition to carry the moutis part of the American Dream.
