Was this whole musical just a rip off of Romeo and Juliet? After seeing West Side Story and reading Romeo and Juliet one could easy see how similar the two are. However you also notice subtle to big differences within the plot, especially the ending. West Side Story is viewed as a copy of Romeo and Juliet, even though it is a musical whereas Romeo and Juliet is a playwright. However these stories do have almost the same basic plot. There are many similarities and differences between West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet.
These stories are similar in many ways, so much it is kinda hard to miss some of the iconic scenes stolen from Romeo and Juliet. For example the balcony scene happened after the party and was when Romeo and Juliet could talk in secrecy. This happened right outside Juliet's home on a balcony. In West Side Story it is basically the same situation, the scene is right after the dance, they are outside Maria's home and she is on a fire escape. They talk until Anita calls for Marira, and in Romeo and Juliet the nurse interrupts them. The Nurse and Anita are looked at as similar roles in their stories. This shows how the scenes are truly similar. The next similarity is both stories focus around

lovers on opposite sides of opposing groups. In West Side Story they are in different gangs with a grudge, in Romeo and Juliet they are in different families with a grudge. This shows both stories have more or less the same conflict. Finally in both stories the boy kills someone close to the girl because the person killed his friend and the girl forgives him. In West Side Story Tony killed Bernardo because he killed Riff, just like in Romeo and Juliet when Romeo killed Tybalt because he killed Mercutio. From these examples one can see West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet share very similar major events. Even though one can see these stories are similar they also have major differences that set them apart from each other.
One major difference is the setting. Romeo and Juliet take place in old times in a city in Italy. West Side Story takes place in New York in 1961. This obviously sets up for a lot of differences, for example there were guns and pocket knives in West Side Story. One of the biggest differences in these stories is that Maria does not kill herself in the end unlike Juliet. Since these stories are similar you think Maria is going to kill herself after Tony died but she doesn't. As we know Juliet decided to kill herself after she found out Romeo was dead. The endings are essentially different in these stories. Finally a third difference is in
West Side Story they had to deal with a corrupt police officer that hated both gangs, in Romeo and Juliet the prince was fair and even let Romeo live after killing someone. I liked West Side Story the best because it is a lot more straightforward than Romeo and Juliet. In West Side Story the characters convey their personalities and emotions in a much better way. In Romeo and Juliet it has you trying to decypher what they are saying. Another reason is that you become more invested and more attached to the characters in West Side Story. In my opinion the characters in West Side Story easier to like/hate a specific character. Finally a third reason I liked West Side Story better is because the mood of the story changes to fit the scene. Since it is a musical the songs can act as comedic relief or an extra dramatic part to the story. In Romeo and Juliet they always seem depressed and too serious. To conclude these two stories have many similarities but also have enough differences for someone to form an opinion about them separately. There is Romeo and Juliet a dramatic older playwright using poetic language and then there is West Side Story a light hearted musical with a dramatic ending that is different from Romeo and Juliet. Both of these stories have the same basic plot but are different in their own unique ways.
In these stories there are similarities between the characters, but there are a lot more differences between them. First off, in Romeo and Juliet there are eleven main characters and on the other hand, in Gnomeo and Juliet there are eight main characters. Furthermore, most of the characters in the spin off are gnomes or animals and have different names that are close to the original one in Romeo and Juliet, such as Benny and
In plays, as in real life, individuals’ actions can change the course of events in theirs, as well as, other individuals’ lives. In both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story, the lovers were forced to take their own lives or be killed because of fate and the actions of others.
West Side Story is the story of two lovers from rival gangs who cannot be together. This musical was heavily inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The music was a combination of jazz, pop, and classical which was influenced by Aaron Copland, which was Leonard Bernstein's friend. This
...and Juliet, when they marry, must marry secretly because of the feud. However, Maria and Tony do not marry, although they do perform a mock wedding. Another example of a difference is that Anita purposely tells the Jets that Maria is dead because of her hatred for them. But when Balthasar tells Romeo that Juliet is dead, he does it without knowing that it isn’t true. The last major difference between the two works is the death of the heroine. Juliet kills herself because she knows that her Romeo is dead and she cannot live without him. However, Maria is left alive at the end of West Side Story. It is almost as though she does not die so that she can accuse society of its prejudicial attitude against the Puerto Ricans and reveal everyone’s role in her and Tony’s love story.
William Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet," set in 16th century Verona, Italy shares differences with Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet," set in modern day Verona Beach. These stories contain the same characters and conflict, however major and minor discrepancies are galore in the story lines of both formats of William Shakespeare's creation. Some major inconsistencies occur, such as Mercutio dying at a beach, portrayed as a hero, instead of being at a bar, looking like a fool, Friar Lawrence's letter is successfully sent to Romeo by mail carriers, however he does not have the opportunity to read it, unlike in the play version, where Romeo does not get the letter from Friar John, and is told the news by Balthazar, and nobody being at Juliet's tomb to stop Romeo from reaching Juliet, unlike in the play, Paris was there to pay his respects to Juliet. In addition to the major inconsistencies, minor ones are included throughout, such as Romeo and Juliet first seeing each other through a fish tank, then kissing in the elevator, not the dance, the famous balcony scene occurring in a pool, not on an actual balcony, and Juliet pointing a gun at Friar after she points it to herself, threatening to commit suicide. These inconsistencies probably occurred in the play to add a modern and entertaining twist to the Shakespearean classic, leading to the same denouement in both versions of "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet."
The language used in these two scenes is quite different. In Romeo and Juliet the majority of the scene is of the two lovers confessing their undying love for each other using beautiful language and many metaphors. They also discuss marriage and serious commitments to each other. In Westside Story, this scene is spent singing to each other, which I find, makes it more romantic but has less tension. They also don’t seem as serious about commitment towards each other.
A Comparison of Scenes From West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet Cinematography The scene before the meeting scene in West Side Story Maria spins. around in her dress the camera then carries on spinning which creates a colourful blur effect on the screen. The effect makes her look like she is almost spinning into the next scene. When Tony and Maria met, all the other characters that were dancing.
West Side Story: The musical West Side Story is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This musical was possible due to the efforts of four people, Leonard Bernstein, the composer, Jerome Robbins, the director and choreographer, Arthur Laurents, the playwright, and Stephen Sondheim, the lyricist. After Rodgers and Hammerstein II’s Oklahoma! West Side Story is considered as the most significant musical. The theme of this musical was different than the contemporary comical musicals in the sense that the plot had a tragic ending.
The two plays, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, have many differences and similarities. Obviously since they were both written by William Shakespeare, then they will have some similarities because a majority of writers have similar traits in how they write each play, novel, movie, etcetera… Romeo from Romeo and Juliet and Brutus from Julius Caesar have an abundant amount of similarities and differences throughout both plays. A majority of the characters had similarities and difference as well, but Romeo and Brutus’s stood out the most to the readers. Romeo and Brutus both did something detrimental that ended up being the cause of their lovers suicide, but it was for different reasons. Then the way that Romeo did not
Love is a beautiful thing, it always works out in the end. Everyone is always happy and no problems occur. West Side Story, a musical by Leonard Bornstein based on Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet parallels a love story of two star-crossed lovers. The play takes place in 1961 in New York City. This musical displays importance because it shows that nothing can overcome the power of love. This play is based on a love story between the main characters of Maria and Tony. Theses two are from different gangs that trouble to get along. They are from different gangs that do not get along at all. Roughly two hundred blocks make up Manhattan’s West Side, which stretches from Central Park West to the Hudson River. For the most part, the street youths
Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story share many similar themes. Romeo and Juliet both chronicle a story of overcoming prejudice and hatred, forbidden love, and defying stereotypes that nobody thought could be broken. The two stories are similar in a multitude of ways, even though their settings are centuries apart- Romeo and Juliet set in the 1500’s, and West Side Story set in the 1950’s. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both teach a lesson of how prejudice can teach you how to hate, and how one of your rivals may be the one who helps you remember how to love.
Paramount aspect of the movie and the play, the theme, were the same, and the overall messages in both were the same. For example, one main message in the stories was that love conquers all. This was demonstrated in both the play and the film when Romeo and Juliet kept secretly meeting each other even though they knew it was against their families’ wishes. In one scene of both the movie and the play Romeo and Juliet even got married and died together so that even if they could not be together on earth they would be together in death.
Instead of bloody fights, the movie puts in dance and singing scenes. The characters are also different because some of them are in relationships, while others even completely change their role. For example Bernardo is Maria’s brother in the story, while in the original play Tybalt plays her cousin. The nurse is also not in a relationship with anyone, while Anita is in a relationship with Bernardo and that fact drastically changes the storyline. Maria and Juliet are very different. While Maria is poor and has a job, Juliet is rich and is not employed. Towards the end of the original play Juliet kills herself after Romeo dies, but Maria doesn’t. Tony and Romeo also show quite a difference in character. Tony is a leader of a gang and poor, while Romeo is rich and married. In the end Romeo kills himself, while Tony is running away from Chino. Chino is similar to Paris in Romeo and Juliet, but a little different because Paris got killed by Romeo, while Chino slew Tony. Friar Laurence and the Doc are different in many ways. The Doc does not get very involved in their relationship, while Friar Laurence made some of the most important decisions in the story. West Side Story’s setting is set in the Upper West side of New York City in the late 1950s, while Romeo and Juliet is set mostly in Verona and Mantua, Italy. The musical is mostly set on the
West Side Story came out in 1961 as a melodramatic musical that took place in New York. It takes the same theme as Shakespeare's, Romeo and Juliet, in that it is about two lovers whose relationship is not accepted by others because of conflicting backgrounds.
The only difference between the love between Romeo and Juliet and other scenarios such as West Side Story, and Splendor in the Grass, is that these social situations make the story interesting, therefore, a wonderful love story. In the story, West Side Story, there is a huge social disagreement between two New York City gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. The Jets are primarily a white territorial gang that has been sworn to defend there street from a Puerto Rican gang, the Sharks. This social difference had made these two groups sworn enemies of each and there fore there, it was known that there was to be no interaction between the gangs unless it was expressed in hostility. At a dance on night that both of the racial groups were attending, Tony, a Jets veteran, had his eye caught by a young girl, Maria, who happened to be the younger sister of the Sharks leader, Benardo.
