The plays Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and Our Town by Thornton Wilder are similar in their use of imagination, dramatic technique, and the way town life was used. There is not many props in the play Our Town, so it is up to the viewers to imagine what is happening and how the setting looks. Romeo and Juliet, similar to Our Town, required viewers to imagine the setting as there was no backdrops, no lighting, and little or no props. A dramatic technique used in both Romeo and Juliet and Our Town is the comparison of youth to age. In Romeo and Juliet the comparison can be seen the most through the guardian figures of Friar Lawrence to Romeo and Nurse to Juliet. Both figures offer advise that Romeo and Juliet do not following, given
their difference of opinion with age. Our Town shows age and and youth in the Gibbs family and the Webb family. George and Emily show how youth act, while their parents show how adults act. Town life is seen in both plays similarly to youth versus age. Both plays demonstrates what happens in a town of the time. In Romeo and Juliet, there is a kingdom with two feuding families. The town had lords, ladies, noblemen, and common-folk; the town was a prime example of the classes in the towns of Shakespeare’s time. Grover’s Corner in Our Town has the characteristics of a typical town in the 1900s. The characters stay close to town, even after college and they find themselves living there the rest of their lives. The overall similarities in the writing of Romeo and Juliet and Our Town, specifically the use of imagination and dramatic technique with town life, are too evident to be ignored.
“Do not deny to him that you love me.”(Rom. 4.1 25) Paris, one of Juliet’s suitors, is trying to win Juliet’s love at the same time that Romeo loves her. Together, Paris and Romeo are juxtaposed, while vying for Juliet’s love, so that they are compared and contrasted. Both have similar traits but are different through how they act towards people and personalities. Paris and Romeo are alike in integrity but very different by their personalities and treatment of Juliet.
Throughout the course of the play Romeo and Juliet and the novel Lord of the Flies, there is a common motif of light versus dark that affects the way characters grow and view the world. Contrasting sharply between the two written works is the usage of this idea. In Romeo and Juliet the light is treated as a problem that will bring their forbidden love to “light” whereas the darkness provides a covering for their rendezvous. Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragic love story about two young lovers who are forced to be estranged as a result of their feuding families. However, the modernised Luhrmann film not only maintains the essence of Shakespeare’s writings, Luhrmann makes it relevant to a teenage audience. This is done through the renewal of props and costumes, the reconstruction of the prologue and the upgrading of the setting, whilst preserving the original Shakespearean language. Out of the two, it is Luhrmann who targets Romeo & Juliet to a younger audience to a much larger extent than Zeffirelli.
In the play “Romeo and Juliet’ by Shakespeare, Romeo and Paris’s decisions are not very well characterized while Juliet are reflected over. Although Romeo and Paris are older and ideal men, their actions are not reasonable. Juliet being at least 5 years younger than both, happens to think beforehand so her words and behavior are improved. This is the result of how much their brain has developed throughout their years.

Appearance vs. reality is one of the themes that are portrayed through out the play. It means, things aren’t always what they seem to be. Something or someone might appear to be another thing, but the reality is different. Romeo and Juliet show appearance vs. reality through out the play because of their secret marriage. Examples of appearance vs. reality are when Juliet finds out about Tybalt’s death and Romeo’s banishment. Juliet’s parents think that Juliet is crying about Tybalt’s death, but she is crying about Romeo’s banishment, when the couple (Romeo and Juliet) get married, but everybody thinks they are still single and when the nurse finds Juliet dead and the Capulet’s have an unnecessary funeral for Juliet even though she is not dead and had only swallowed Friar Lawrence’s potion, which put her into a long sleep.
