In many texts, the characters have a “moment of truth” that impacts them for the rest of the story. In the texts Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings, and “Taco Head” by Viola Canales, characters/people experience moments of truth that change their lives. In the text Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings, a character, Brady experiences how one event can change everything. Brady is a kid that lives on the Chesapeake Bay. One day, his dad took him out of school to look for his neighbors that had gone missing on the water. He then finds Ben (one of his neighbors that is a kid) he rushes him down the water and gives him CPR and thinks he saves his life. …show more content…

He ends up working for Ben’s mom, so he gets a task to clean up the boathouse. First, he walks in and sees “[his] fathers cordless drill.there were flecks of red paint on the drill.the same color as the kayak.” (Cummings 96) As a result, he confronts his friends, J.T. and Digger drilling holes in the kayak. Then he feels a lot of pressure on his shoulders to do the right thing or protect his friends. He then throws the drill in the bay so there is no evidence. After, his dad gives a talk to him that is nothing related to the death of Ben, but it strikes something in Brady and he tells his dad everything. Ultimately, they go to court and his friend J.T. and Digger pleaded guilty and received 9 months in a correctional camp. However, if Brady walked in and had never seen the drill, he would have just cleaned the boathouse. Then Brady would eventually have to stress or guilt anymore about the death of Ben, so he and his 2 best friends would still be friends. Therefore, they would go to school together and hang out every day. This would make Brady a much happier
