Percy Jackson, the Essay Thief
“If my life is going to mean anything, I have to live it myself.”, Percy´s words describe perfectly his actions in the movie Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The movie was released in 2010 after the novel series by Rick Rioardian. The movie tells the story of a 16-year-old half-god, who's name is Percy Jackson, trying to save the world with his two friends Grover and Annabeth. They must stop the start of a war between the two most powerful gods, Zeus and Poseidon. Percy, the Hero, is attacked by many different creatures, like Medusa and a Dragon. The story shows a growing friendship between Grover, Annabeth, and Percy, as they fight to retain world peace.

Percy Jackson, the protagonist follows all of the Hero's stages.

Percy's journey starts right after he goes back home from school to his ordinary world. While he is making a guided tour in the local museum, a fury attacks him. This is the moment when he sees his first magician creature and is also his call to the adventure. On his way to Camp Half Blood he tries to save his mother, he wants to adhere to his old life, and this is the refusal of the call. The meeting with the mentor (Chiron ) is important for Percy to get his questions answered . Percy decides to leave camp half blood with his friends Grover and Annabeth, he crosses the threshold. While Annabeth, Grover and Percy are fighting against Medusa and a Dragon, they prepare themselves for the Underworld, this is the Approach in the Hero's journey. The Ordeal is represented in entering the underworld. Percy conquers hades, the Reward. Percy, Sally and Annabeth take pills to get out of the underworld, the Road Back. But the Resurrection shows Luke trying to kill Percy. The Return with the Elixir is when Percy reaches the Half Blood Camp and is celebrated by the other

demigods.
Percy Jackson is the Hero in the movie. He is proving his strength by returning Zeus' lightning bolt. Because he has a look of Percy's training, Chiron is Percy's mentor and comparable to Morpheus. Grover is the guardian, who tries to protect Percy in any way. Annabeth is the another guardian of Percy.
The filmmakers gave Mr. Brunner the archetype of the Mentor, because Percy knows him before in his ordinary world. He actually is an authority person, which doesn't say much but everything he says is important. For example he tells him the stories of Perseus. Because Percy´s knowledge about the history is poor, Annabeth needed to have a good knowledge.
In conclusion the essay shows that the Hero´s stages are all gone through by Percy. He goes through the call to the adventure to the Return with the Elixir. That Percy does not listen to Chiron maybe makes him look like, if he would be naive but his success shows the opposite. Furthermore I would say that Percy also went on his journey for himself. He was thrown out of his world and wanted to have an approval for being special.
