What is a hero? What is a leader? Both of these words could be used to describe Odysseus and Atticus Finch in their times and, maybe still could be described as a leader/hero. Odysseus who lived in Ancient Greek was the picture of a hero and leader in that time. He … . Atticus who lived in Alabama in the early-mid 1900’s, could also be classified as a hero of some sort but he seemed like more of a leader. He, … . Atticus from To Kill A Mockingbird, and Odysseus from The Odyssey both are leaders and Heros in their own way, they also have people surrounding them that question them, and also people that support them.
Both Atticus and Odysseus could be qualified as a leader but in their own unique way. Atticus Finch, being the father of two

young children when the novel takes place not only instructs the children to be on the right path, but is also an example of how to behave. For example when Atticus was walking by a wicked old lady named Mrs.Dubose he greeted her with kindness and even complimented her (Lee 133). Atticus demonstrated how to behave and is leading the children in the right direction. He doesn’t only show the children to be polite, but to go the extra mile and and to be kind which is a great quality in a leader. Atticus is more of a subtle leader while on the contrary Odysseus is a very obvious leader. Odysseus is a strong leader and he makes it clear when he states, “At first my men begged me to take some cheeses and go, then to drive the lambs and kids from the pens down to the swift ship and set sail. But I would not listen, though it would have been best, wishing to see the giant himself, and test his hospitality” (Homer 218). Although this may not have the result that he pursued, it was a big decision that he knew could have been good or bad so he made the decision to stay which was a good quality to look for in a leader in Ancient Greece and maybe today in certain situations. Odysseus also is very confident about his decision and does not show any sign of hesitation which makes his followers believe in him. Odysseus and Aticus both contain solid leadership skills but they also and heros. Atticus and Odysseus could both be called heroes by some and could also not be a hero in others eyes.
Atticus Finch was considered a hero to many of the African American people in his town, but was a disgrace to many of the fair skinned citizens of Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus accepts the offer to be the attorney for Tom Robinson who is an african american Citizen of Maycomb who is tried for raping a young white woman. Many of the people who are rooting for Tom would consider Atticus a hero; of course not the ones that wear a cape and have superpowers but, one that could possibly save a mans life. Of course people in 1930’s south were not as accepting about race as today so people that were white did not think that atticus was a hero but yet a humiliation to his family. Odysseys on the other hand, was looked upon as a hero because of his accomplishments in war. Odysseus is a hero when he uses his intellect to find a way out of the Cyclops’ cave causing him to be a hero ( Homer 224-225). Odysseus’ version of hero is much more different that Atticus because the times are different, and in the time when Odysseus’ was alive he was a clear picture of a hero. He used strategy, he was strong, brave and also the gods favored him. He used his heroic attributes when he found a way out of that cave. Today we may seem some of his actions as unconventional but in Ancient Greece they were key components to being a hero. Atticus and Odysseus have their critics on weather they should be heros
or not, but to a large portion of people they could be considered a hero is some way, shape or form. Odysseus and Atticus possess key characteristics of being a leader and use those characteristics in very different ways but as a whole they are leaders. They could also be considered heroes in their eras but, even they had their skeptics just like all heroes do. Overall, Atticus Finch and Odysseus are both strong men who are leaders and can be considered a hero.
How are the characters of Atticus and Jack alike and how are they different? Choose at least two traits to compare them.
How do you define a hero? Some may define a hero as someone with great courage and bravery; to others a hero might be a strong warrior and leader who wins battles; others may define a hero as one who uses his brain as much as his brawn to win. In Homer's epic poem, Odyssey, Odysseus is portrayed as a hero by every definition.
A hero is someone who would sacrifice himself for others, someone who is selfless and caring. Odysseus from Homer’s, “The Odyssey” does not have these traits. Throughout the book, Odysseus displays many negative character traits that show he is not someone to be admired or treated like a hero. He is too proud, he does not listen, and he constantly puts his needs before that of his men.
Our hero in To Kill A Mockingbird is Atticus Finch. In this story Atticus finch is a lawyer whose morality and reason makes him the hero of the story. For example in this quote “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you
The hero is the man who fights for what he loves. A hero is someone who rises above circumstance to take back what is his or hers. A hero is a man who was favored by the gods. All of these qualities and more can be found in both Odysseus and Telemachus. Odysseus and Telemachus both showed many manifestations of a hero throughout the Odyssey. It was a journey of change and growth for both men. Out of this journey they returned with much wisdom and personal gain. Odysseus and Telemachus have truly walked the path of the hero’s journey.
Odysseus has all the qualities made to be a true hero. Not only did Odysseus fight on behalf of the Greeks in Troy (Trojan War), but everything he went through he learned a valuable lesson at the end; Odysseus endured so much during his journey going back to Ithaca but he never gave up on any of his principles. He also had good escape strategies, and he risked his life to save others. Imagine you being on the same journey Odysseus went through, do you honestly believe you would have survived? He made some minor mistakes along the way but nobody’s perfect. That’s why Odysseus is a hero because, he’s strong, and intelligent and was able to get out of sticky situations.
Atticus Finch is a heroic character in To Kill A Mockingbird. A hero is a person who is known for certain achievements and qualities. Atticus is known for many qualities he displayed during the novel, as well as various achievements. This makes him a heroic character. Atticus Finch is a hero because he defended a black man in court, proved his abilities and intelligences, and cared for everybody equally.
The definition of a hero is unique for every individual; however there are several regulations that majority of individuals can agree on. A hero must exhibit traits such as humility, kindness, and courage. Once the candidate expresses hubris, displays cruelty, or retreats from a formidable challenge, he cannot be considered a hero. Lastly, a hero candidate must overcome challenges that defy the odds. He must deliver a gift to society that benefits society as a whole; such gifts can be freedom, liberty, or hope. Odysseus in The Odyssey, by Homer, fulfilled these requirements and rightfully earned the title of a hero. Odysseus is well deserving of the title hero because he has put the needs of others before his own, shown signs of courage in the face of adversity, and displays humility by ridding himself of his hubris.
When people think about heros it is a person in a cape flying into burning buildings to save people or fighting a villain to save the world. According to Oxford Dictionary a hero is a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. This shows how just normal people can be qualified as heros. A book that exemplifies this is To Kill A Mockingbird because it is filled with people that went out of their way to help others or the society as a whole. A person who did this in particular was Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch was a hero because he fell under the definition and was admired for his courage, achievements, and noble qualities.
Many think being a hero is having super powers, but on the contrary it's more than that. A hero is one who is distinguished for their courage and bravery, and looked upon for their great deeds. A hero like this is not just found in modern society today, but in mythology as well. In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus earns the title of a true hero by conveying many qualities such as: determination, courage and leadership.
Atticus Finch was a true hero, in my eyes. He had all the essentials to being a hero, such as; respect, equality, and quiet dignity. Sure, Mr. Finch didn’t quite reach his goal of winning the Tom Robinson case, but it was the fact that he attempted it, knowing he would lose. A hero is not someone who achieves something, but is a person that attempts to. The journey to your goal might even be more important than the actual achievement, because on your way to the top, struggles appear and you overcome them by learning new lessons to live by in life. In conclusion, Atticus Finch truly is America’s greatest hero.
As seen throughout The Odyssey, a hero is perceived as a person who achieves great success never before seen and whose legacy lives beyond their years. Since The Odyssey was written around the eighth century BCE, the people that we view as heros in present day tend to embody different traits than the heroes of that time. Even though the word, “hero” does not have one specific definition, a hero is generally categorized as someone who is idolized for their bravery and does anything necessary to defend their people. Although Odysseus embodies the Homeric ideals of heroism in that he accomplishes triumphs that others have not, his successes are the product of divine intervention and his actions were primarily selfish; therefore, he is not a true
Odysseus portrays himself as anything but a hero throughout Homer’s The Odyssey. Odysseus goes through his life believing he is the best. He has no regard for anyone’s feelings but his own, and he believes nothing and no one can harm him, not even the gods. Odysseus feels he is always the leader and no one can tell him otherwise. Odysseus should not be considered a hero because he portrays himself as a selfish man that failed his crew, and is controlled by his hubris.
Odysseus is not a hero based on the standards of merciful, selfless, and gentle. His actions against Polyphemus, the Suitors, and his men truly show that he is in fact the opposite of a hero. The actions he takes to return home safely and to get back his throne are very cruel and show signs that he lacks the nobility of being called a hero, or a king, or a warrior. He has shown that he powerful, destructive, and ruthless and these are qualities that a hero must not have. Odysseus, the mighty King of Ithaca is not a hero because he is not selfless, gentle, or merciful.
There are many heroes in “The Odyssey” but the main one would be Odysseus. He has many great traits, but a few stand out that make him a heroic leader. Odysseus is a very courageous, and noble man, but he also has great confidence in his authority, and a thirst for glory that most do not have and that alone makes him stick out.
