Similarities Between Mormonism And Christianity

Religion has always been a sensitive topic to discuss with others of different faiths, because not everyone agrees with what is practiced and some just believe religion is pointless all together. In fact, there are two religions that are frequently seen at war with one another, constantly trying to prove their religion to be more correct. The captivating part about it is they are the two religions that are the most complimentary, but viewed as the most different, and that is Mormonism and Christianity. Although they may seem different for those that follow these faiths, there are actually quite a few more similarities than most individuals realize.

One of the biggest differences individuals notice when contrasting Mormon’s and Christian’s

religion is the Book of Mormon. The Mormon and Christian church follow full heartedly in the bible, but what separates the two is the fact that the Mormons believe in “Another testament of Jesus Christ” or in other words the Book of Mormon. One of the biggest reasons the Christians are against the Book of Mormon, is the fact that in book of Revelations and Deuteronomy, the bible clearly states that “You shall not add to the word which I the lord am commanding you, nor take away from this book…” (Deuteronomy 4:2). Although many explanations could be given from both sides on what this verse is referring to, the best way to completely understand this verse is to look at it from a wider perspective, and then many other things are seen. What can be seen from this verse though, is that the slightest difference in interpretations of this scripture can create the greatest separation in beliefs and the most contention one with another.
Christians and Mormons believe in God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, almost anything that Christians believe Mormons also believe but in a slightly different way.

As they both believe in the same beings, Christians believe that Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit are one person. One of the many verses that support their beliefs is in the book of John, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was god... And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw his glory…” (John 1:1, 14). This simple but complex verse describes how the word, or bible, was god, then came to earth, which we know to be Jesus, so in other words the bible, Jesus, and God are all one. This can be confusing for those not fully equipped with the knowledge and understanding of a Christian believer, but many follow these principals and live by them.

On the other hand Mormons believe in the same beings as the Christians, but the Mormons believe that each is separate and have different purposes. “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God (also known as the Holy Ghost) descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased’,” Matthew 3:16-17. Here it is clearly stated why then Mormons believe in separate beings, but nevertheless Christians and Mormons believe in the same Gods, just not in the same

way.
Many people complain about the ‘rules and regulations’ of the Mormon church, but the purpose is not to restrict but to protect. To protect individuals from the world around every day, contaminating the minds of the righteous or that want to be righteous. Just as a prophet of the Mormon Church stated, “Be in the world, but not of the world,” (Cook). Mormons have instructions and words of wisdom from prophets of old and of today that help guide and instruct them to help them from falling from their ultimate goal, and that is to return to their eternal father, for all time and eternity.
Many people of the Christian religion believe that there is a large gap between these two religions, but in all reality they aren’t all that different. Christians and Mormons do have different morals and slightly different ideas of how the bible is interpreted and what it means, but in the end the most important thing to both religions is Jesus. He died for everyone’s sins and made it possible for his children to return to him, so in all reality none of the little details matter, as long as you keep your focus on him and do as he asks, then both religions can testify and believe that’s how you return to him. Ultimately that’s what the goal of religion is, it’s to save those from the fiery pit of hell, or as the Mormons refer to it, separation from God the father and his son Jesus Christ. Many individuals find it hard to figure out which church is true, but the reality is they both are, you just have to choose what you want and what you think the lord is telling you to do.
