The movie Monty Python and The Holy Grail is based on stories such as Beowulf and Sir Gawain and Green Knight. The movie tells the basis of the stories by revolving around a technique called satire. Satire: the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to tell something in a funny tone or in a way that creates laughter. Satire was used in the film Monty Python and The Holy Grail to turn common medieval themes such as Chivalric code and Knightly behavior, characteristics of a noble quest and role of religion into a corny, yet laughable manner. Monty Python exemplifies many similar themes when comparing the movie to readings such as Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
Many can see that throughout the film that King Arthur and his knights were on a noble quest to find the Holy Grail. This quest is much like another many know, the reading Beowulf. Monty Python is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Sir Gawain accepted a challenge and the challenge was that if he chopped the Green Knight’s head off he must find the Green Knight in a year for the favor to be returned. A year later Sir Gawain would go on a quest to Camelot to find the Green Knight so they could complete their deal. The quests explained in Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are very similar to the noble quest King Arthur and his knights were on. Role of religion is another theme exemplified in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. When going to fight the scariest monster of them all, on the quest to find the holy grail, they bring out the “Holy hand grenade” to save them. The scariest monster turns out to be a very tiny rabbit. They end up underestimating it and it kills a few men before they fall back and use the “holy hand grenade.” The grenade is supposed to be used to smite the powers of evil. The role of religion was meant to not have any evil in it and the “holy hand grenade” is used to destroy the evil. Chivalric code was another theme used throughout the film and was depicted through satire as well.
There was never an authentic code of chivalry as such, yet there were qualities idealized as chivalric such as bravery. Bravery was shown through satire during the film as King Arthur and his knights would run into many things that would exemplify their bravery and they retreat or fall back. One example would be when King Arthur and his knights go through the forest and run into the knights of “Ni.” The Knights of “Ni” would back King Arthur and his knights down by using the term “Ni” and force them to find shrubbery to move forward. King Arthur and his Knights would then go get the shrubby to come back for the Knights to say they are no longer the Knights of “Ni” and that King Arthur needs to find another shrubbery. King Arthur and his knights would not knowingly use the word “it” to back the Knights of “Ni” down so they could follow on with their quest to find the Holy
Grail. To conclude, Monty Python and The Holy Grail is based on stories such as Beowulf and Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. The Arthurian cycle shows a sporadic awareness of the impossibility of mere humans fulfilling all the ideals that Arthur and his court represent. The story of Lancelot and Guenevere, Merlin's imprisonment by Nimu‘, and numerous other instances testify to the recognition of this tension between the real and the unrealistic.
T.H. White is directly referenced within the film and Malory’s idealization of the glory of chivalry can once again be seen. In my essay, I will show how chivalry is used in all the texts above as a bonding agent between all Arthurian knights. As Arthur’s knights honor and respect chivalry they remain as one cohesive group, but once they begin to abandon chivalry the Round Table begins to crumble and chaos ensues. This code of chivalry all came from King Arthur. It all began with Arthur’s father, Uther. Uther gets a sword from the Lady of the Lake and this sword is named Excalibur. Later on in the battle among England, Merlin (the magician) grants Uther his wish in return for whatever he asked for. As for this wish, Uther slept with Egrain’s wife as he asked and impregnated her with his soon to be son, Arthur. When Arthur was born Merlin came for what he was promised, and took Arthur away with him, raising him. What Merlin did know was that Uther’s son was soon to be the new King of England. This soon to be king, Arthur, must become a knight and granted the right to be king. However; there are three examples of chivalry from the two texts, "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and "Morte d’Arthur" are courage, honor and to protect the queen and all women.
The film Monty Python and the Holy Grail satirizes the medieval “epic hero” through parodying actual heroes in medieval literature. The comedy film displays important medieval values in a humorous light and pokes fun at Arthurian legends. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and other tales of Arthur’s Knights of the Round table are heavily parodied through out the film. The medieval tales often include the knight errant, or a knight who wandered the lands in search of chivalrous adventures, and throughout the film Arthur and his newly formed gang portray the knight errant as foolish and cowardly.

This logic does not deal with the nature of life, but deals with the more complex forms of logic that require the filling of blanks to make things work out. Although, for the most part, certain things did not make sense, but yet they did express logic. They used environmental attributes to make sense of the complexities they faced.
• There was a scene where King Arthur and his knights hid inside a wooden rabbit to invade the castle. This was a parody of the wooden Trojan horse used to invade the Greeks in the Illiad. The comedic effect was delivered when the king and his men got out of the horse before they even got into the castle. • There were also scenes ever so often a historian would pop up and give you a brief narrative about what was going on in the movie. This was a parody of all the historians that covered the story of Arthur.
The world of Arthurian literature is filled with magic and adventure that enchants readers of all ages. T.H. White has done a fantastic job of turning the childhood adventures of Arthur by turning his narrative into spellbinding, cartoon like interpretation of the sword in the stone legend. Moral values are apparent from the beginning of White’s novel. White has cleverly connected all the educational adventures of Arthur, along with the people and animals encountered to the pulling the sword out of the stone. This marvelous amalgamation of key elements not only ties the loose ends of Arthur’s adventures together, they also solidify the reasoning behind Arthurs’ predetermined path to becoming the king of England.
When Maurice Keen set out to write a book on the components and development of chivalry, he did not know it would be “the last word on a seductive subject,” as stated by one Washington Post reviewer. Instead, Keen was merely satisfying a curiosity that derived from a childhood fascination of stories filled with “knights in shining armour.” This juvenile captivation was then transformed into a serious scholarly interest by Keen’s teachers, the product of which is a work based upon literary, artifactual, and academic evidence. Keen’s Chivalry strives to prove that chivalry existed not as a fantastical distraction, as erroneously portrayed by romances, but instead as an integral and functional feature of medieval politics, religion, and society. The thirteen chapters use an exposition format to quietly champion Keen’s opinion of chivalry as being an element of an essentially secular code of “honour” derived from military practices.
In the Medieval Period, knights dedicated their lives to following the code of chivalry. In Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur, a number of characters performed chivalrous acts to achieve the status of an ideal knight. Their characteristics of respect for women and courtesy for all, helpfulness to the weak, honor, and skill in battle made the characters King Arthur, King Pellinore, and Sir Gryfflette examples of a what knights strove to be like in Medieval society. Because of the examples ofchivalry, Le Morte d’Arthur showed what a knight desired to be, so he could improve theworld in which he lived.

The first hint comes of chivalry or “code” presents itself in the passage, “A warm welcome.../My name is Arthur…/Won’t you slide from that saddle…/and the business which brings…” (252-255).
