Macbeth v Lion King
To whom is driven by ambition, could not escape from the guilt that haunted them. Every person grapels not only in everyday life but in literature and in animated movies. Two well known works such as Roger Allers The Lion King and Shakespeare’s Macbeth express this message that guilt will haunt who is driven by ambition through foreshadowing, motif and foil characters.
Shakespeare and Allers use foreshadowing throughout their work to illustrate the theme of guilt through their characters such as Macbeth and Simba. In Macbeth, the device of foreshadowing is used when Banquo begins to raise curiosity upon Macbeth as a suspect for the murders. Macbeth is noticing Banquo’s curiosity and decides to invite him over for “dinner” which so happens be the last time anyone would see Banquo. In The Lion King, foreshadowing is used when Scar sings his “Scary Song” about wanting to be king with the hyenas. Scar begins his mischievous plans which leads to the fall of king mufasa and the disappearance of Simba.

Following foreshadowing, Shakespeare and Allers use the motif of ghost in their work to show the theme of guilt once again.
During Macbeth, the motif of ghost is when the ghost of Banquo appears during the dinner. Only Macbeth is able to see him and everyone is beginning to believe that Macbeth is going crazy. In The Lion King, when Simba begins to face reality upon him needing to go back to Pride Land and be king, his father appears as a ghost figure in a cloud to begin to help guide him. Mufasa gives him a speech to tell his son that he need to reclaim his place in the “circle of life” and Simba must remember who he is although he might’ve changed over the
years. Finally, Shakespeare and Allers uses foil characters to demonstrate that opposite characters can go through a similar journey in two separate works and still have a positive outcome. Macduff, from the play Macbeth is a foil character because he is opposite from Simba but seems to go through a similar journey in which leads to a death of somehow. Macduff left Scotland, leaving his wife and son behind so he could create a partnership with the son of Duncan, Malcolm. Come to find out his family is killed by Macbeth and now he needs to avenge the killer. Simba from The Lion King believes Scar is his protector like his dad and listens to his deceiving uncle who put him in the valley. There is where Simba was caught in the stampede and his father Mufasa attempted to save him. In the success, Mufasa goes to save himself and Scar purposely knocks him off the cliff to kill his brother and blames the murder on Simba leading to Simba’s disappearance. In conclusion, being human or even having a sense of feelings will leave you with a sense of guilt when something wrong is done. The two works such as Macbeth and The Lion King are just two examples that demonstrate the guilt of ambitious characters. The average person can takeaway from this that everything has a consequence and you’ll be lucky if your consequence is a good one.
In every tale of power and evil, there are similarities and differences to do with the antagonists and protagonists. In the Novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding and the Play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, there are analogues between the Lord of the Flies antagonist Jack, and Macbeth’s protagonist Macbeth. They both share a lust for power but too have different stories when it comes to that lust for evil.
The quote, “Man is not truly one, but truly two.” can be analyzed from a behaviorally or mentally aspect. Physically, man is one, but if you delve deeper into the man, he can be separated into two parts which creates a whole man. In the play Macbeth and in the novel Lord of the Flies, some of the characters can be split into two conflicting parts. The characters are neither entirely good or entirely bad. In both the novel and the play, something happens to the characters that made them split into an evil side, thus creating two men.
Thereby, the two works that is Macbeth and The Kite Runner not only present before the humanity, the immense power and potency of guilt, but also emphatically reveal the eventual consequences of the guilt traceable to an evil act or an act of cowardice or betrayal. These two works expose the psychology of guilt in a very vivid and threadbare manner, which explains their appeal and the human interest they accrue.
In Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, the theme ambition is displayed in both Tom and Macbeth. Due to their driving behaviour, it results in murder, deception and dishonour.

A quote which really defines Lady Macbeth and Macbeth’s ambition regarding power is “Power does not corrupt men; fools; however, if they get into a position of power, corrupt power” George Bernard Shaw. Lady Macbeth is more ambitious in terms of gaining power then Macbeth is and that Lady Macbeth will do almost anything to gain power, even evil things that she normally wouldn’t do. This is shown when Macbeth and Lady Macbeth learn about the witches’ predictions, then roles in the plans to murder king Duncan in order to gain power and then finally after the murder, Macbeth doesn’t want to finish the plan making Lady Macbeth angry and causing a chance they might get caught and gain no power at all.
In The Brothers Karamazov Fyodor Dostoevsky said, “…fear is simply the consequence of every lie.” Dostoevsky is stating how people are afraid of what will happen when their lie(s) is/are put out in the open. Fear is a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined. This line suggests that people are afraid of the truth, which inevitably is the consequence of every lie. Even though this quote was written by a 19th century author it can still relate to texts that were made centuries prior. Both Sophocles and Shakespeare’s plays support Dostoevky because both plays deal with the act of lying and its consequences as a major motif.
Ambition can consume leaders, nonetheless some leaders can handle the pressure that comes with having to lead individuals like Abraham Lincoln. However some leaders like Adolf Hitler and Macbeth allowed their ambition to get the best of them and cause harm. Hitler allowed his ambition to drive him to make catastrophic decisions such as trying to conquer other (stronger) countries, make dangerous weapons, torturer, and kill millions of innocent people. Whereas Macbeth allowed his ambition to kill the people that loved and supported him the most in order to gain control of the kingdom. Both Macbeth and Hitler illustrate leadership, but turned mad in order to consume more power.
The Relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth Throughout the play of "Macbeth" written by William Shakespeare there is an on-going relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. This relationship is one of the functions of the play that creates most of the actions, reactions, moods, feelings and attitudes. Macbeth's relationship with his wife was not always great. This is shown in one of there conversations; MACBETH: "We will proceed no further in this business: He hath honour'd me of late; and I have bought Golden opinions from all sorts of people, Which would be worn now in their newest gloss, Not cast aside so soon. "(Macbeth,I,vii, )
Macbeth: Shakespeare's Comparisons and Contrasts. Throughout Macbeth Shakespeare uses comparison and contrast to bring out characteristics of his main character, Macbeth. Shakespeare uses comparisons with Duncan, Lady Macbeth, and Banquo to bring out aspects of Macbeth's character. After hearing of Macbeth's courageousness on the battlefield, Duncan, a good and honest king, bestows the title of Cawdor on Macbeth.

In the play Othello and the play Macbeth, Shakespeare uses the main characters in both plays as warriors. Both characters in each of their plays, had constant outside voices seeping into their minds which ultimately contributed to the fate of both Othello and Macbeth. The witches in the play Macbeth had more of an effect of Macbeth’s actions then Iago had on Othello’s actions in the play Othello. Each character had a lot of pressure on them throughout the play however the witches influence on Macbeth resulted in more destruction than Iago’s influence on Othello.
The Shakespearean playwrights Macbeth and Hamlet are both very well-known tragedies. They have many things in common but are different in some ways. Both plays involve greed but the characters are different. There are some characters that have the same qualities such as Hamlet and Malcolm who both killed for revenge. Macbeth and Hamlet are different in character even though they both killed. The tragedies are the same in that many people are killed but the reasons are very different. Macbeths need for power has caused him to lose control while Hamlets need for revenge causes him to lose his own life.
