Heracles was written during the heydays of ancient Greece and The Great Gatsby depicted the scenario of America during the Roaring Twenties. Although centuries apart, there is a common running theme stringing the two main characters in the compositions – Heracles and Jay Gatsby. Both are supposed to be heroes, thought to be heroes but ironically their feet of clay are exposed and in a way the myth makes way into modern literature.
Heracles is a play penned by Euripides in ancient Greece. It narrates the madness of Heracles, the hero, which has been divinely induced. It caused him to take the life of his spouse and children. He is described as, “I gave birth to you, my darlings. I gave you life but only so that others, my enemies, can insult you and torment you – kill you, all for their own enjoyment!”.[3] Similarly, Jay Gatsby’s initial overtures to Daisy had been disregarded. To win her through various devious means Gatsby became very rich and threw around his opulence in no uncertain way for he believed “She wanted her life shaped now, immediately – and the decision must be made by some force – of love, of money, of unquestionable practicality – that was close at hand”.[4] Meanwhile Daisy had married. However Daisy and Jay try to renew their lost relationship but the tune was missing. Daisy’s core was with her husband Tom. Tom too was with her although he had a mistress. It is the successful twenties of America on one side and the great days of Greek ascendancy in the years before Christ, on the other. Fitzgerald has projected Jay as the typical hero of the America of his times – the story of rags to riches; in the New World anybody had a chance to rise to the top of the money ladder provided he could ride the wave. In this way Jay was successful. Heracles in the Greek play is actually the great hero Hercules and completes triumphantly the twelve labors that were thrown as a challenge to him. But when he was just about to sip from the cup and be reunited with his beloved and children the cup slips- Heracles becomes mad and ends up shattered. “The killer himself will not know that he has killed his own sons until I have released him from my madness”.[5] Jay too is the hero of the story that focuses on his achievements and successes. He nearly reaches his goal but at the last moment realization dawns and tragedy strikes and heartbroken. “Dishonesty in a woman is a thing you never blame deeply …It started because she passed so close to some workmen that our fender flicked a button on one man’s coat”.[6] Heracles too was about to be reunited when the fates struck. Thus in both pieces the whims of fate has been highlighted and not the cause and effect cycle of events. There is courage in both Heracles and Jay – fighting the demons of their times.
