The French and Haitian revolution had a variety of similarities and differences. A few similarities include, the enlightenment ideas, they both became in power by the outcome of the american revolution , and the unfair social class systems. Differences in social inequality, economy and political overthrow.
Both the French and Haitian revolution were inspired by the American revolution. They use the ideas from the enlightenment against the power of the democracy. To continue both revolutions had an unfair social class systems. There was little to no rights during this time period. This is because of this large gap between high and low class. The lowest class in both revolutions was the majority in both populations. The main causes of the
In the 1800s, there were many American territories that were apart of the colonies of European powers that were trying to become independent from Europe. Both Haiti in the year 1804, and South America in the year 1815, wrote letters about their independence. The Haitian Declaration of Independence and the Jamaican Letter have similarities in why they are writing the letters, and differences like who they are writing too. While both are similar, lets start by looking at The Haitian Declaration of Independence.
...on, Enlightenment ideas permeated the politics, economics, and religion of the French Revolution and the American Revolution. While both show several similarities, they predominantly differ on most things. Politically, American conservatives respected the individual and property rights of a citizen, while French politics respected the individual rights, took property rights in some cases, and used terror to influence people. Economically, the American free market idea left the economy alone, while the French input socialist ideas such as price ceilings. Religiously, the America closely associated itself with religion in the revolution, while the French public mostly despised the church.
The Haitian Revolution was time of hectic blood shed war. Toussaint Louverture was the leader of the Haitians out of slavery and free from the Spanish. The colony of St. Domingue was a slave island, where slaves would work to make goods to be sent to Spain in return for nothing. The people were treated harsh and done wrong but by the efforts of Louverture they will become free. Louverture was the leader of the revolution but failed to complete his duties because of capture Jean- Jacques Dessalines took over in 1802. He was captured before the war before the end of the war. The Revolution lasted from 1789-1803 until everything was settled and St. Domingue was a free land called Haiti.
They were both inspired by previous revolutions. France was inspired by England and America, and Latin America was inspired by them as well as France. Another similarity is that both revolutions were lead by the middle class. In France the bourgeoisie led the third estate, and the creoles led Latin America. Although the bourgeoisie and creoles did not have natural born political power, they were still wealthy and educated enough to successfully lead a revolution. However, France and Latin America do share their differences. France is known for their revolution being very violent and terrifying. Not to say that the Latin American revolution wasn’t violent, but it wasn’t to a savage extent. King of Brazil, Pedro I even declared Brazil independent from Portugal. This was done with very little bloodshed. Also, the revolutions ended completely different. In France the push for democracy wasn’t quite met. They ended up with an absolute monarchy again, however this time around the people's needs were actually met. In Latin America they did fulfill their goal to become independent. Again, these two revolutions are different, but also share some
The late 18th century and early 19th century was a prominent time period in which the French Revolution and Haitian revolution occurred. Both revolutions were connected to each other such that they shared similar causes and consequences. Together, France and Haiti were angered by the inequality and unfair privileges that continued to appear in their societies. At the same time, they were inspired and hopeful of bringing the Enlightenment ideas into reality. Although they were able to accomplish most of what they fought for, such as the abolition of slavery, they still took part in bloody revolutions.
The French Revolution started during 1789, it allowed for the people to have a better government that actually protected the natural rights of the people. This toke a nearly a decade of rioting and violence for the Third Estate to have their way and get the rights they deserved. From all the causes like the famine of wheat, long debts because of wars, the heavy taxes, and their rights not being protected, some causes stood out more than the others. It is noted that these reasons had to play a major role in order for the French Revolution to occur. The three most important causes of the French revolution are the ideas that came from the Enlightenment, the Old Regime not being an efficient class system, and the heavy taxation.
The American and the French revolutions had many similarities and differences. One similarity being is that they both wanted to escape the rule of their King. Second, they both started by an uprising of people against unfair taxation by the monarchy. The French peasants were not represented by the Parliament. It was mainly composed of middle and upper class people. Now, the American colonists were not represented in England because of their lack of presence. Both wanted to set up a Republic, which provided liberty and justice to all classes of citizens. Just like France, the American colonists were composed up mainly middle and lower class citizens. The American Revolution started out by not wanting bloodshed and violence. France started out with violence and bloodshed. (American Revolution)
Another aspect to keep in mind when comparing the French and American revolutions is provocation. Provocation includes such things as land war, class war, tyranny, and grievances. The American Revolution had many altercations with social classes and land. One reason the revolution began was because the British created the Proclamation of 1763, which stated that Americans couldn't move east of the Appalachian Mountains. Land was abundant in America, but the British were tired of battles amongst themselves and the Native Americans.
During the French Revolution, there was an unequal social structure resulting in the Third Estate or the lower class being taxed heavily by the First and Second estates, regardless of the population being larger. In Haiti, however, individuals were slaves and possessed no rights or freedom, therefore resulting in an unfair class system as well as racial tensions. Initially, France’s government faced major debts as a result of expensive wars and immoderate spending, causing them to tax the Third Estate, leading to a revolution. Haiti’s economy, however, flourished as France acquired free labor from slaves who produced essential goods for trade and wealth.
Both the French and Russian revolutions occurred because of two main reasons. Both of these revolutions were the direct results of bad leadership and a bad economy. These two reasons along with other factors caused both of these revolutions. Although they were both similar, they also had differences. A difference between the two is that the Russians had an unsuccessful "pre-revolution" in 1905. Another difference between these two revolutions is the fact that the French turned towards a democracy while the Russian government became communist.
...] and the Haitians shall hence foward be known only by the generic application of Blacks” (Dessalines, Haiti Const.). However, the American and Latin American Revolution were conservative movements. While they did overthrow the government by force and implement a new system, they were less revolutionary because there was less bloodshed. This can be seen as the American Revolution gained independence from Britain and set up a new system set forth by the Enlightenment ideals and English liberties in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Likewise, the Latin American Revolution created less of a change in the political and social structures of Latin America such as not becoming democratic. Each revolution differed greatly in terms of effects, violence, being a conservative or radical movement, and the revolution being categorized as political, social, or both.
What makes the Haitian Revolution more radical than the two before it is the fact that it was led by slaves. Throughout the previous revolutions, the main goal was for white men, essentially, to be free from oppressive government rule. There were few thoughts regarding the rights of slaves, even though they were men. The fact that this group of people were able to remove the colonial authority and establish their own country during this period of time was particularly radical and unheard of.
At a quick glance it would appear that the American and French revolution were very similar, however at a second closer glance it becomes quite noticeable that there was a vast difference. One of the main differences is that unlike the French, Americans fought not for abstraction but took up arms to defend themselves and preserve the rights of Englishmen. One of their main complaints was summed up by the slogan “no taxation without representation.” While the American Revolution was a fight for the demands of the Englishmen the French Revolution was a fight for equality, liberty, and fraternity.
One of the early differences in the revolutions is the way each began. At the beginning of the French Revolution, the government was about to collapse. While at the beginning the American Revolution, the colonist felt oppressed but had a stable governing body. The French Revolution was caused by problems that can be categorized into three categories: political and social imbalance, government bankruptcy, and Enlightenment thinking. The American Revolution was caused by impeding political laws and taxation on the British colonies by England.
Haiti:The First Country to Abolish Slavery, For a Reason The Haitian revolution was a tough battle, but through revolt, the slaves were able to fight their way to freedom, and justifiably so. The slaves attacking the slaveholders was essential to their own liberation. This shows the importance of violence to the success of a revolution. After many years of exploitation and death, the slaves were able to strategically overtake the French. This was done using a variety of tactics, including violence when necessary.
